Henry wasn’t afraid at all: “No worries, the auction is over, no one’s going to care, unless those cowards call the cops—but then they’ll just embarrass themselves.”
After saying that, he spat on the ground and swaggered off.
The people in the nearby warehouse were watching the commotion, and finally someone said, “Hey, Boss Fox, where’d you find a bodyguard? Ata ata, does this guy know Chinese kung fu?”
Henry patted David Thompson’s shoulder proudly and said, “He’s not a bodyguard, he’s the treasure-hunting king Boss Fox’s partner!”
Even though he said he wasn’t afraid of the police, once they got back, they still packed up everything in the warehouse as quickly as possible and drove off.
Most of what was in the warehouse was useless junk. In America, getting rid of this kind of trash costs money.
Henry, being a bit shameless, found a dumpster on the street and dumped all the trash in, then ran off quickly—if the police caught him doing this, he’d be arrested.
Cleaning out the warehouse and dealing with the trash took a lot of time, and before they knew it, it was getting late.
When they drove past the “Aquitaine Golden Restaurant,” Henry got out to buy some food.
Aquitaine is the name of a historical duchy in France, now famous in the global cattle industry for Aquitaine beef. The steaks at this restaurant are made with Aquitaine beef, and the prices are steep—it’s one of the most upscale restaurants in Flagstaff.
Henry bought four steaks, a lemon beef jerky salad, roast beef, two 12-inch beef pizzas, and a house special cheese and meat sauce baked potato. The total came to eight hundred bucks!
David Thompson was shocked: “Wow, are you planning to treat the president to dinner? Isn’t this a bit much?”
Henry laughed and said, “I’m treating you and Hannah to dinner! We made money, so of course we should eat well. Do you know how much our Harley can sell for?”
“How much?”
“We could eat here every day for the next week, no problem,” Henry said.
David Thompson himself would never spend money like this, but Henry’s attitude toward spending was different from his—or rather, all Americans’ attitudes were different from his.
He’d noticed this as soon as he arrived in America: most Americans have no savings, only loans. They don’t have the habit of saving; when they have money, they spend it.
Treasure hunters are especially like this—they make money fast, but spend it just as fast. Just like Henry, if a single deal goes wrong, they could go bankrupt. It sounds exaggerated, but it’s the reality.
Chapter 0014: Speed and Passion
When Hannah saw the exquisite packaging and the even more exquisite logo, she was stunned: “This is crazy! You guys spent all the money you made from selling the massage chair on food and fun?!”
The Aquitaine Golden Restaurant’s logo was unmistakable—a cute, golden little cow that even the beggars in Flagstaff would recognize.
David Thompson picked up Ah Meow: “No, most of my money went to saving Ah Meow.”
The little tabby tried to swipe at him, but as soon as its paw lashed out, it was caught.
David Thompson was enjoying the bug’s new ability more and more. Slowing down the flow of time might not make him money yet, but the feeling of having a superpower was awesome.
It made him feel like “the chosen one of the multiverse.”
But a chosen one who couldn’t bear to spend a thousand bucks on a meal—well, that was a bit embarrassing.
Hannah glared at him: “That’s still spending on fun! Why are you keeping a tabby cat? You might get arrested by the police, and you can’t even prove you didn’t buy it.”
Henry came back carrying a bottle of champagne, flicked his sister on the forehead, and said, “My little girl, your brain hasn’t grown along with your chest…”
David Thompson almost choked on that.
He felt he couldn’t let Henry keep talking, or who knows what he’d say next: “We went to another storage auction and got lucky—we scored a Harley.”
“You’re kidding me, right?”
“You’re the landlord—who’d dare kid the landlord?”
Once she was sure, Hannah cheered up. She picked up the steak takeout box and sniffed it: “It smells amazing! What are we waiting for? Let’s celebrate!”
David Thompson started with the pizza. The 12-inch pizza was evenly sliced—one piece, two bites, two bites, one piece—and soon the whole pizza disappeared as he wolfed it down.
The little tabby was meowing hungrily at the smell of steak, but no one paid it any attention, and it couldn’t move on its own, so it could only vent its frustration by clawing at David Thompson’s pant leg.
With a couple of swipes, his jeans turned into ripped jeans.
David Thompson ignored it—filling his own stomach was the priority. He’d used the bug’s new ability many times today and was exhausted, so he was really starving.
Henry had bought so much food mainly to take care of him.
After dinner, Hannah really wanted to see what the motorcycle looked like, but it wasn’t possible today.
On the way back, they’d dropped the motorcycle off at the Harley dealership. It was a heavy-duty bike and needed professionals to assemble it.
The next day, when she got off her night shift, she didn’t even sleep—she insisted on going to see what this treasure-hunted motorcycle looked like.
Unlike most girls, Hannah wasn’t that interested in pretty clothes or expensive cosmetics. She liked cars—or rather, she liked speed. Her dream now was to buy a new BMW Z4 sports car.
