Chapter 13

David Thompson explained, “This isn’t my cat; I ran into it in the wild. Um, can the hospital run some tests on it with your equipment?”

Sophie nodded and said, “We can, but I suggest you look for a pet hospital.”

“Why? Does the hospital not treat animals?”

“No, it’s just that the medication and surgery fees at a hospital are much more expensive than at a pet hospital. I’m sure your cat doesn’t have medical insurance, and if you’re not using insurance, it won’t be a small sum.”

David Thompson understood, but he didn’t care. He had just made over three thousand yuan, so paying for the kitten’s treatment was no big deal.

After getting his definite answer, Dr. Sophie wrote him a test order and had a nurse take him to get the yellow cat examined, while she prepared for surgery.

The test results were fairly optimistic. The yellow cat’s waist and leg muscles were unusually thick, and the gears hadn’t damaged its internal organs.

Dr. Sophie and the female nurse worked for over half an hour. The yellow cat was brought out, and by then, the back half of its body was almost completely wrapped up. It was sleeping soundly with its eyes closed.

It was pretty amusing—while sleeping, the yellow cat even snored a little, making a constant “gulu gulu” sound from its mouth.

David Thompson went to pay the bill, and his eyes froze when he saw the total.

Next to him, Sophie looked at him cautiously and asked, “Sir, you are going to pay, right? You’re not going to sneak away, are you?”

The Black female nurse stared at him with a look that said, “Just try to run and see what happens.”

Before the surgery, all the instruments, medications, and surgery fees had been explained to David Thompson, and he had signed before they proceeded.

But American hospitals are sneaky—their bills are split up, with no unified total quote. Now, when it was time to settle up, the total came to two thousand!

That was more than his living expenses for half a year!

“I’ll just consider it a good deed,” he consoled himself.

Luckily, this was easy money he’d earned quickly, and it was being used to save a life, so he didn’t feel too bad about spending it.

Taking the kitten, David Thompson left the hospital and returned to Red Light Street.

It was almost sunset when Henry finally strolled out.

David Thompson teased, “Hey, Boss Fox, you really are a walking reproductive organ. Being able to spend an entire afternoon on a woman is impressive.”

Henry snorted and said, “Don’t talk to Boss Fox in that tone. You think I was in there looking for women? Wrong—I was looking for money-making tips!”

  “What kind of money-making tips?”

“Oh man, of course it’s about warehouse auctions! This is a bar, a hangout for treasure hunters. Sometimes, when people drink too much, they let slip some valuable information!”

“So what did you find out this time?”

Henry tossed him a beer and said, “In two days, Bachelor Warehouse Company is auctioning off a batch of storage units. There’s a Harley Street Glide motorcycle in one of them. Same deal as with the massage chair—can you handle it?”

David Thompson nodded, “I can, still a 50% success rate.”

“That’s good, but this auction will probably be a lot more competitive. We’ll need to watch our spending these next two days. I estimate it might take three or four thousand to get the unit we want,” Henry said seriously.

David Thompson was taken aback. “It’ll take that much?”

Henry said, “That’s not much. Don’t you have thirty-six hundred? Use it as capital—damn, what’s with that look? The capital will be paid back to you after!”

David Thompson pointed to the passenger seat, where there was a stylish cage. “I’m willing to put up the capital, but this afternoon I found an injured cat on the road, so I took it to the hospital for treatment. It cost two thousand.”

Hearing this, Henry nearly lost it. “Holy Mother above, are you freaking kidding me?! Two thousand to treat a cat? Are you sure you treated a cat and not a tiger?!”

David Thompson held up the cage. “I think it’s a cat, not a tiger.”

Henry glared, about to explode, but when he saw the cat in the cage, he swallowed his words and started to examine it closely.

His face was a bit too close to the cage. Kitty glanced at him coolly, then, lightning-fast, swiped a paw at him!

Unfortunately, the cage was in the way, so Kitty didn’t succeed.

Henry burst out laughing and said, “Shit, this little guy really is as hot-tempered as the news said. Hey, buddy, you really never do a losing deal!”

Hearing Henry’s words, David Thompson asked curiously, “What do you mean?”

“I mean you never do a losing deal. Spending two thousand to get this guy is a steal!” Henry said excitedly. “Don’t tell me you don’t know its breed.”

David Thompson more or less understood what Henry meant. “You’re saying this cat is some rare breed?”

“Of course! You really don’t know what it is? Just look at its appearance—can’t you tell?”

David Thompson looked closely. The cat’s biggest feature was its two large, exceptionally lively eyes, like perfect black pearls. Then there were its markings—leopard-like spots on its body, two black stripes on its cheeks, long limbs, and a long tail.
