Chapter 13

“Being an esper isn’t so bad. Sure, your genes might have mutated somehow and your lifespan might be a bit shorter, but at least you’re stronger than ordinary people.” Little Brian patted Ethan Carter on the shoulder, putting on a look that said “I don’t discriminate against espers” as he tried to comfort him.

“Tch…” Ethan Carter brushed off Little Brian’s salty hand, and the latter had already dashed over to the brand new computer in the bedroom, shouting excitedly.

“Wow, a 27-inch LCD monitor, the most advanced processor, awesome specs!”

“Xiao Hang, you’re really something!” Overjoyed, Little Brian didn’t forget his great benefactor Ethan Carter, quickly patting Ethan Carter on the shoulder with a lecherous grin on his face. “With a screen this big, watching those kinds of movies will be amazing! Don’t worry, I’ll definitely invite you to watch together!”

As he spoke, Little Brian shot Ethan Carter a knowing look that everyone understood.

“Ahem, ahem, ahem!” Ethan Carter rolled his eyes at Little Brian, thinking to himself, I’m such an upright guy, how could you possibly corrupt me?

Little Brian just gave him a look of disdain and flipped him the middle finger.

Joking around with Little Brian, Ethan Carter suddenly remembered something and said, “I got a call from the class monitor yesterday. He said there’s going to be a class reunion at Mingyue Entertainment City in three days.”

“Oh!” Little Brian acted completely indifferent, shaking his head dismissively before sitting back down in front of his new computer.

“Xu Xin will be there too!” Ethan Carter tempted him.

“I’m going, I’m going!” Little Brian suddenly turned around, his face full of lecherous excitement.

“Oh wow!” Ethan Carter teased, “Little Brian, you care more about girls than your friends!”

“Cut it out!” Little Brian said seriously, “You think I don’t know what you’re up to, Xiao Hang? You want to chase after Emily Foster and want me to play the wingman, right?”

With that, Little Brian sighed and said, “Fine, fine, for the sake of our solid friendship and the fact that you bought me a new computer, I’ll help you out this time!”

“Tch…” Ethan Carter looked at him with disdain. “Clearly you just want to go yourself, but you have to pin it on me.”

“Sigh.” Little Brian let out a heavy sigh, his face full of pain. “Back then, who was the idiot who tried to give someone an umbrella and got rejected, then got so depressed he drank three bottles of beer and ended up shouting in class that he liked Emily Foster?”

“Uh… hehe…” Ethan Carter scratched his head, a little embarrassed.

Little Brian was talking about their university days. One time, it was pouring rain, and after class, a lot of people were stuck in the hallway, including Emily Foster. He thought it was his chance, so he went to give Emily Foster an umbrella, but she didn’t even notice him and just pulled out her own umbrella from her bag. He was so embarrassed he wished he could disappear.

That afternoon, he dragged a few close friends out for drinks. Later, after downing three bottles of beer, he went to class and ended up shouting “Emily Foster, I like you!” in advanced math class, making the math professor furious and turning the whole thing into a campus legend. After that, the name Ethan Carter was known far and wide…

Thinking back on those ridiculous things he’d done, Ethan Carter felt a bit emotional. Although he’d only been out in the real world for a year, his mindset was already very different from back then.

“Hehe, stop overthinking! Just confess to her!” Little Brian egged him on from the side. “Even Napoleon said, ‘A toad that doesn’t want to eat a swan isn’t a good toad.’ We’ve got to aim high too!”

“Uh…” Ethan Carter looked frustrated. “Did Napoleon really say that?”

“And besides, how could you compare me to a toad!”

Suddenly, Ethan Carter snapped to attention, realizing the key point in Little Brian’s words, and immediately chased after Little Brian, playfully roughhousing…

……

……

Three days later, evening, Mingyue Entertainment City.

Ethan Carter was starting to feel a bit tempted by Little Brian’s words.

“Back then, I was just a pickpocket, so of course I wasn’t good enough for her. Now that I’m an esper, I should be worthy of her, right?” Standing outside the entertainment city, Ethan Carter’s mind was filled with thoughts of Emily Foster.

That’s just how people are—if you don’t think about something, it’s fine, but once you do, you can’t forget it.

Ever since Little Brian brought it up a few days ago, stirring up feelings that had been buried for a year, he couldn’t stop thinking about her.

Inside the entertainment city, a tall figure appeared.

“Hey! Little Ethan and Little Brian, it’s you guys! Come on in!”

A warm voice followed.

“Little Ethan, that’s Brian Bolton. Just seeing him makes me sick!” Ethan Carter was startled, and Little Brian’s voice was already in his ear. Little Brian never liked Brian Bolton to begin with, and Ethan Carter’s opinion of him had only soured after that wedding incident.

But since they were here for a class reunion, Ethan Carter didn’t want to start any trouble with Brian Bolton, so he put on a fake smile, greeted him, and went inside.

At 7:30 p.m., except for a few classmates who were busy with business out of town or studying abroad, everyone who could make it had arrived.

As the class monitor and host of the reunion, Brian Bolton naturally said a few words to kick things off, and then it was time for everyone to catch up.

To be honest, the university Ethan Carter graduated from was a pretty good one. Even though it had only been a year since graduation, most of his classmates had already achieved something, and there were very few who were struggling as much as Ethan Carter and Little William.
