Chapter 11

“We don’t have a sniper—could it be the enemy’s, and they made a mistake?”

William Harris thought this, immediately jumped off the truck, and found cover to hide behind.

Ethan Brooks’s heartbeat sped up slightly, but what flowed through his veins wasn’t tension, it was excitement. His eyes narrowed as he continued to move the crosshairs, aiming at the truck driver, and suddenly pulled the trigger.

“Pew.”

“Bang.”

The truck’s front windshield shattered instantly. The driver’s chest exploded in a massive spray of blood. A special forces soldier had just raised his gun when the co-driver’s head suddenly burst open, and the vehicle came to an abrupt stop after crashing into a tree.

The remaining special forces soldier stood there at a loss, until his companion beside him tugged at him, snapping him back to reality.

“Hey, man, your marksmanship is impressive!”

“No, it wasn’t me, it was a sniper—there’s a sniper!”

Soon, the special forces soldiers all realized that enemies beside them were being silently shot through the chest. The bullets were so powerful that they could shatter an entire chest cavity with a single shot—something a small-caliber M16 could never do.

“Where did the sniper come from?!”

Chapter 6: Why Aren’t You a Beautiful Woman

In a narrow, dim stairwell, William Harris quickly took out several enemies. Just as he let his guard down, a drug dealer suddenly sprang out, kicked him in the stomach, and brandished a dagger.

“Bang.”

A gunshot rang out from behind. The drug dealer’s dagger had just been raised and was only halfway down when his head was blown apart.

William Harris looked back to see Ethan Brooks lowering his assault rifle, with a yellow sniper rifle slung across his back. “Whew... so it was you, Ethan Brooks. You scared me.”

Ethan Brooks smiled at him and said, “Good thing I got here in time. Otherwise, you’d at least have a busted leg.”

“Number Seven, Number Seven, are you okay? That’s great! Number Six is here too. You saved Number Seven just now, didn’t you? Thank God, you came at just the right time.”

Lieutenant Jason Miller of the Red Beret Lightning Assault Team ran over, facing William Harris and Ethan Brooks.

Ethan Brooks gave a mysterious smile. This was no coincidence, and it had nothing to do with God.

“By the way, Ethan Brooks, where did you go just now? Logan and I didn’t see you, and we were worried for a long time.”

“I found a sniper upstairs, so I went up and took him out, and seized his sniper rifle. I figured with a sniper rifle, I could contribute more from a spot you guys couldn’t see.”

Only then did William Harris notice the sniper rifle on Ethan Brooks’s back, a look of surprise in his eyes. “You were the sniper?”

Jason Miller finally realized as well and said, “No wonder drug dealers kept getting taken out mysteriously—it was you, Number Six! Well done!”

Ethan Brooks just smiled and said nothing. His real goal was the Warrior’s Medal in the end.

Jason Miller glanced at the M200 on his back and asked in confusion, “Number Six, what model is that gun on your back? I’ve never seen it before. Looks a bit like an M96, but it’s not.”

Ethan Brooks’s expression tightened. It was 1999, and this gun hadn’t even been designed yet. But the M200 was indeed based on the Windrunner M96 assault rifle. Looks like it’s not easy to fool these special forces guys.

“I don’t know either. I picked it up from a drug dealer. It works pretty well—very accurate.”

“Oh, I see. Are you a sniper? I don’t really like sniper rifles myself—assault rifles are more fun!”

“I’ve had sniper training.”

“Haha, during the Gulf War, the thing I feared most was snipers.”

...

The live combat mission ended successfully. With Ethan Brooks’s involvement, not even the minor ringleaders in charge of drug trafficking managed to escape. But it was all in vain—the big boss would soon realize it was the Hunter School’s doing, and the inevitable retaliation would still come.

It was also because of his outstanding performance in this mission that Ethan Brooks once again received praise from the Crocodile Instructor.

By now, the plot had already changed quite a bit. The protagonist William Harris, since he didn’t injure his leg, lost many opportunities to spend time alone with the medical officer Lena, and naturally missed out on the chance to “persevere through training while wounded.”

Two full months after training began, the evening party was held smoothly.

October 1st, 1999, was the medical officer Lena’s birthday, and also China’s fiftieth birthday—National Day.

It was only now that all the special forces soldiers learned that Lena was actually the daughter of the Hunter School’s principal—Major General Ross. Of course, Ethan Brooks was an exception; he already knew the plot of this movie by heart.

Major General Ross prepared a cake for Lena, and also prepared an extra gift for Ethan Brooks, William Harris, and Logan Wright—a video of the 1999 National Day military parade.

This was Ethan Brooks’s second time watching the 1999 parade, but this time was destined to be different. Some emotion quietly swelled inside him—a strong sense of honor.

He wasn’t a soldier, but he was Chinese.

While people all over the country watched the spectacular parade on TV, feeling the prosperity and strength of their homeland, few could imagine that, thousands of miles away in South America, two special forces soldiers were undergoing a life-and-death ordeal.

...

Soon after, the next mission began—and this one was even more dramatic.
