Chapter 2

“When I reincarnated, I must have chosen hell mode—otherwise, why is it so hard to get through this life!”

Already stuck in the pit, Henry Carter had no choice. After graduation, he begged and pleaded just to squeeze into a private hospital. He worked himself to the bone, never complained, and before he was thirty, he became the third-in-command in his department—though, to be fair, there were only three doctors in the entire proctology department...

The two people ahead of Henry Carter were the pot-bellied head of proctology and the balding deputy director. Both were highly skilled, just barely good enough to keep their patients alive, so the whole department relied on Henry Carter to keep from losing money. But what can you do? Those two must have picked easy mode at birth—they were the boss’s eldest and second brothers-in-law. They played cards during work, fooled around after hours, and compared to them, Henry Carter’s life was downright tragic.

A few days ago, the director was out socializing, drank for seven days straight, and managed to give himself both a prolapsed stomach and alcohol poisoning. He’s still in the emergency room, and when they finally wheel him out, it’ll only be to cover him with a white sheet. After three seconds of mourning, Henry Carter got excited. Why? Because the deputy director was about to be promoted to director, which meant he’d become the deputy director!

Promotion, a raise, marrying a rich and beautiful woman, and just waiting for the balding guy to drink himself into a prolapsed stomach—then he’d finally become director. Once he was the top dog in proctology, he’d wait for the hospital director to get a prolapsed stomach too, then he’d become CEO, reach the pinnacle of life, and dominate the proctology... medical world! Just thinking about it made him a little excited!

Unfortunately, the fantasy was perfect, but reality was cruel. Out of the blue, a new deputy director parachuted in—the boss’s third brother-in-law...

Career setbacks didn’t bring Henry Carter any luck in love either. Still single, Henry Carter lamented that the sphincter muscle was truly a curse. Thirty blind dates in a row, all failures. At first, when the girls heard he was a doctor, their eyes lit up like a hungry wolf spotting fresh meat, all eager to exchange numbers and add him on WeChat. But as soon as they found out he was a proctologist, their attitude did a complete 180—they suddenly had to rush out, hadn’t washed their face, left their phone at home, so they couldn’t exchange numbers or add him on WeChat.

Who are you kidding! Who goes out without their phone these days? Going out without a phone is like going out without clothes! Besides, even without a phone, you can still exchange numbers and add each other on WeChat. Come on, girl, we can add each other and chat a bit!

Despairing of blind dates, Henry Carter didn’t even bother hoping to find a nurse girlfriend at the hospital. The whole “the water near the tower gets the moon first” thing just didn’t apply to him.

Why? All the nurses in the hospital knew exactly what went on in the proctology department. The cute nurses all agreed: Dr. Carter was highly skilled, a legend in the proctology world, but... but it was just too gross! They just couldn’t get along with him!

Sure, he was young and promising, but as soon as he “inserted” something! Sure, he was kind of handsome, but as soon as he “inserted” something! Sure, he was in good shape and looked strong, but as soon as he “inserted” something! Anyway, as soon as he “inserted” something, it was just wrong—no spark, absolutely impossible!

The nurses swore up and down that compared to the “inserting doctor” from proctology... Dr. Carter, the OB-GYN’s Dr. Thompson was way better! He might not be handsome, but he had a supercar! His medical skills might be so-so, but he had a mansion! His physique might be average, and rumor had it his stamina wasn’t great, but he was the boss’s son! Plus, rumor had it his fingers were very nimble—just thinking about it made them a little shy!

Fine! Henry Carter finally realized his greatest enemy in life was the boss. Eldest brother-in-law, second brother-in-law, third brother-in-law, son—the boss’s whole family was like a curse on his destiny, born to hold him back!

“He inserts things during exams too! If we’re both inserting, why do the girls avoid me? My fingers are nimble too!” Just as Henry Carter was sighing and regretting his life choices, the lightbulb above his head went out.

Lamenting the unfairness of life, even the bathroom light in the boss’s house was bullying him now. Looking up, Henry Carter was stunned. Above his head was pitch black—not just the bathroom light, even the ceiling was gone, nothing but darkness. Unlike the night sky, even the universe has stars shining! This darkness was pure to the extreme, so pure it seemed to swallow all light—a real black hole.

“Damn, are aliens really invading Earth?” Henry Carter was dumbfounded. He realized that when he spoke, he couldn’t hear his own voice—everything was sucked into the black hole.

“Aliens opening a wormhole to invade Earth, and I’m the first to discover it... Could it be... could proctology really save the world?” In his daze, Henry Carter’s imagination ran wild, and he couldn’t help but recall running under the setting sun in his youth—those were the days of his lost youth.

A gray bolt of lightning slowly struck within the black hole. Snapping back to reality, Henry Carter tried to get up, but to his surprise, he found he had no control over his body—not even a pinky finger could move. Unable to blink, Henry Carter could only watch as the lightning slowly descended onto his head...

Hmm, a little numb!

Boom! The whole hospital shook three times. The medical staff and patients, thinking it was an earthquake, realized after a few tremors that it was just the building shuddering. They searched everywhere until they found a charred, censored lump in the men’s restroom on the second floor.
