Chapter 6

Even if there is an opportunity, it is reserved for those who are prepared and capable, not for someone like him who has no skills at all.

Matthew Carter was not belittling himself; rather, after experiencing hardship and struggle, he understood that while goals could be set grandly, the road to those goals had to be walked step by step, solidly and steadily.

After sitting for a while, Matthew Carter stood up and continued walking forward, analyzing himself as he went, trying to find the area he was currently most skilled in. After all, he had the memories of two people stored in his brain—surely he could find something useful.

High-tech? He didn’t understand a thing.

Finance and economics? How could someone who worried about his next meal care about such things?

Write a novel that could be adapted into a Hollywood movie and earn royalties? He only graduated from junior high, with mediocre grades, and the previous guy hadn’t even finished middle school—reading complex and profound articles was already a problem, let alone writing them.

Aside from this decent body and some physical strength, and if you exclude driving, he really didn’t seem to have any skills he was good at.

After analyzing everything, Matthew Carter sadly realized that even combining what the two of them had learned, he still couldn’t do any of those high-end, well-paid intellectual jobs.

At that moment, he felt that the saying “If you don’t work hard when you’re young, you’ll only regret it when you’re old” really made sense.

Matthew Carter stopped under a palm tree and suddenly felt that the previous guy coming to Los Angeles to chase a Hollywood dream wasn’t just a momentary impulse. Given his own abilities and circumstances, the chance of making it in Hollywood did seem a bit higher than in those other high-end industries!

Most importantly, Hollywood’s entry threshold was relatively low. In the information that guy had collected, Jim Carrey had worked as a janitor, Madonna had been a fast-food sales clerk, Brad Pitt had played a McDonald’s mascot, Johnny Depp had been a pen telemarketer, Harrison Ford was a carpenter, and even the legendary James Cameron had been a truck driver...

All these big names in Hollywood had been, just like him before they became famous, bona fide losers—real nobodies.

Yet, these former failures were now all successful and enviable bastards!

There were just too many similar examples to count. Hollywood really did seem like the best industry for losers to turn their lives around and become rich and successful.

But he felt things definitely wouldn’t be as simple as they seemed—he just didn’t know the details yet.

After thinking it over, Matthew Carter realized that the road to his goal—Hollywood—seemed the most realistic and had the highest chance of success.

A person’s position determines the limits of their vision. Standing at the bottom of society, Matthew Carter looked up and saw only this ladder called Hollywood.

“Hollywood, huh...” Matthew Carter raised his head and looked in the direction of the Hollywood Hills in his memory. “It’s you, then!”

Thinking of Hollywood, a scene of fame and fortune immediately appeared before his eyes: living in the most luxurious mansion in Beverly Hills, a garage full of limited-edition luxury cars, dozens of naked blonde beauties laughing and playing in the pool in front of the villa, and countless media reporters lining up for interviews...

Now that’s life! That’s the life he wanted!

Since he couldn’t think of any other way to change his fate, Matthew Carter decided to continue his predecessor’s Hollywood dream and see if he could also transform from a nobody into a rich and successful man!

With a goal and a path to reach it, he instantly felt much lighter. He stretched his long legs and strode forward.

“I’m going to make a lot of money!” Matthew Carter suddenly shouted at the top of his lungs. “I’m going to be a big star!”

His shout made two young men riding by on bicycles glance at him, giving him a look as if he were crazy, then shaking their heads and riding away.

After shouting those words, Matthew Carter felt his pent-up mood lighten, even though he knew this road would be tough.

The previous guy, after arriving in Los Angeles, had also registered at an agency specializing in background acting, but never got a chance to participate in a Hollywood film, let alone earn any income. He could only work part-time as a driver for a party service company, and then got tricked by another agent into accepting what looked like a delicious but turned out to be a bitter pizza.

Recalling all the Hollywood-related memories, Matthew Carter realized he couldn’t find any opportunities for now. He could only do what those rumored big stars did: get a job to establish himself in Los Angeles first, and then try every possible way to find an opportunity that suited him!

Thinking about work, Matthew Carter felt that the driving job he’d quit before wasn’t bad. He worked evenings, driving people around, then picked them up at midnight or in the morning, and had most of the day to rest—perfect for an actor looking for opportunities on the side.

Plus, this job might even let him meet people in the Hollywood industry. It was just that his predecessor had bad luck and gave up before he could stick it out, deciding instead to try the so-called backdoor into Hollywood.

After weighing it over, Matthew Carter thought it was definitely worth continuing this job. He pulled out his second-hand phone, searched for a while, and dialed a number.

“Hello...”

A humble male voice answered, “This is Red Penguin Company. How can I help you?”
