"Let's go..." he waved at Matthew Carter, "Let's go inside."
The two of them exchanged a few words with the staff guarding the entrance to the studio, then entered the office area they had visited before. Since it was lunchtime, most people had gone to eat, and the office area was deserted. Matthew Carter and Dennis Cooper sat patiently on the bench outside the casting director's office, waiting.
"Remember!" Dennis Cooper seemed to be in a really good mood and specifically reminded Matthew Carter, "Just do whatever they tell you to do during filming. Don't take any initiative on your own."
He waved his hand, "You're just a background extra. In most cases, just stand still. It's not difficult."
Matthew Carter nodded, "I got it!"
This was the first step in accumulating experience and credentials. He had come to Los Angeles knowing almost nothing, and with experience and credentials, his chances of landing roles in the future would be much higher.
"I'm going to the restroom. Wait here and don't wander off."
If it weren't for this stepping stone working out and getting connected with the casting director Rubin, Dennis Cooper wouldn't have bothered saying all this. "There might be other extras coming later. Don't get into any conflicts with anyone."
Matthew Carter nodded, and Dennis Cooper turned and walked away.
Sitting there, bored out of his mind, Matthew Carter couldn't help but imagine what his first scene in the afternoon would be like. He hadn't been thinking for long when suddenly the sound of high heels clicking on the floor echoed from the other end of the hallway. Then, from around a corner, a tall, slender girl appeared.
Matthew Carter glanced over and saw it was Angelina Jolie, her hair dyed blonde. He thought she was coming to see him and quickly stood up and waved.
Unexpectedly, Angelina Jolie didn't even look at him. She pushed open a door and went straight in.
"Why? Why are yesterday's scenes being scrapped?" Angelina Jolie's angry shout rang out immediately. "And you're cutting my scenes too?"
A cold, ethereal female voice followed, "I'm the producer. This is a normal filming adjustment!"
Chapter 10: Turns Out She's a Thief
"For the sake of the movie?" Angelina Jolie's furious voice came again. "Winona Ryder, you really know how to flatter yourself!"
"Jolie!" That cold voice also raised its tone.
Are the two female leads of this film having a conflict? Matthew Carter perked up his ears curiously.
Angelina Jolie seemed extremely angry, not caring about Winona Ryder's feelings at all. "You think I don't know what you're up to? You want to scrap yesterday's scene because I outshone you, the leading lady! You want to cut my scenes because I've been performing better than you since filming started!"
Her voice grew louder and louder. "You're doing all this just because you're afraid I'll steal your spotlight as the lead actress!"
"Say whatever you want."
Unlike the furious Angelina Jolie, Winona Ryder's voice remained cold. "This is within my authority as producer. You... hmph... are just a supporting actress. You have no right to interfere!"
Matthew Carter remembered that Dennis Cooper had said Winona Ryder was not only the lead actress in "Girl, Interrupted," but also credited as a producer.
Even though he wasn't particularly familiar with Hollywood, he knew that the film industry here was producer-centered.
The room suddenly fell silent. Apparently, that statement had shut Angelina Jolie up. After a long while, Angelina Jolie's voice sounded again.
But this time, she wasn't as furious. "Don't think that just because you got this project off the ground, you can do whatever you want!"
Suddenly, Angelina Jolie's voice rose again. "Don't think I can't see that you're a bitch! Real bitches love to play innocent! To act pure! Just like you!"
Bang—
After that, there was a loud slamming of the door. Angelina Jolie stormed out, walking away coldly.
Matthew Carter watched Angelina Jolie's retreating figure. He had no intention of going over from start to finish. In this crew, whether it was Angelina Jolie or Winona Ryder, they were both big shots. For a nobody like him to go over would just be asking for trouble.
Soon after, two more people came out of that room. Unlike Angelina Jolie, they walked toward Matthew Carter.
"Winona..." One of them, a girl wearing glasses who seemed to be an assistant, asked, "Do you want to..."
Halfway through her sentence, she saw Matthew Carter sitting on the bench in the hallway, staring straight at Winona Ryder, and immediately stopped talking.
The two women walked closer and closer. Matthew Carter looked at Winona Ryder's eyes, which were filled with obvious surprise. Because of Captain Jack Depp, he knew of this woman, but couldn't remember what she looked like.
Winona Ryder was wearing a white shirt and light blue jeans, her short black hair cut to her ears, her features flawless. From this angle, she looked slender, pure, and beautiful...
Matthew Carter was sure he had seen her before—just a few days ago, in fact. There was no way he could be mistaken!
Wasn't she the female thief who stole books at the bookstore? That was what really shocked Matthew Carter: Johnny Depp's ex-girlfriend, the producer and lead actress of this film, Winona Ryder, turned out to be a thief!
