Chapter 7

"Hello, Lester Grant sir." Matthew Carter, who had been mingling in society for many years and knew what to say at this moment, spoke with a hint of flattery in his voice, "I'm Matthew Carter, Matthew Carter·Horner, I'm coming to work for you again."

That voice immediately turned haughty. "It's you, kid? What do you want from me? If there's nothing, I'm hanging up."

"No, no, no!" Matthew Carter hurriedly said, "I'm just hoping to keep working with you to make a living, aren't I?"

"Didn't you quit?" The voice was relentless. "Weren't you going to become a big star and make a fortune?"

Matthew Carter continued to humble himself. "That was just my ignorance, I was tricked. You were the insightful one, you saw right through that scam."

"Ha, I knew it, kid." The person was clearly pleased. "You lack experience, you need to learn more from me."

"That's exactly why I want to keep learning from you." Matthew Carter immediately followed his lead. "You never know until you've been fooled. Lester Grant sir, you really are good to me."

"Alright, enough with the useless talk." The voice on the phone softened a lot. "You want to come back to work, right? I'll give you half an hour. If you can make it to the company in half an hour, you start tonight!"

Matthew Carter quickly promised, "I'll definitely make it!"

Chapter 4: The Veteran Driver

A yellow taxi stopped beside a four-story building on Hollywood Boulevard. Matthew Carter paid the fare, opened the door and got out, took out his phone to check the time—he still had plenty of time—then walked unhurriedly to the front of the building. The most eye-catching thing outside the main entrance was a red-painted penguin sculpture, and above the penguin hung a small bronze plaque, clearly engraved with a line of bold black letters—Red Penguin Service Company!

Matthew Carter recalled some related information, then strode into the building. A pretty female receptionist immediately came over, ready to greet him, but stopped when she saw a familiar face.

"Hi..." Matthew Carter greeted casually. "I have an appointment with Lester Grant sir."

The receptionist didn't try to stop him, nodded, and said, "He should be in his office."

Matthew Carter went up the stairs and soon arrived at an office on the third floor. He knocked lightly on the door, and when a "Come in" sounded from inside, he pushed the door open and entered.

"Ah, our big star is here!"

A clearly mocking voice rang out at once. "Big star, have you made enough money? Ready to throw a wild party?"

There were three people in the office. The speaker was a bald Black man; the other two were a fat man and a tall, thin middle-aged man.

"Made a fortune, huh?" the fat man also mocked. "When does the project you acted in premiere? Remember to let us know, we'll definitely show up to support you!"

"No need to thank us!" The Black man had especially small eyes, always squinting into slits when he looked at people. "Just give us free movie tickets!"

At this, he seemed unable to hold back and burst out laughing. The fat man laughed too, lightly slapping the table as if he'd just heard the funniest thing in the world.

The tall, thin man didn't speak, but he was laughing as well.

Matthew Carter ignored the fat man and the Black man, and went straight to the tall, thin man's desk, respectfully saying, "Lester Grant sir, I'm here."

"Mm." Lester Grant nodded.

"I really regret not listening to you before." Matthew Carter knew he needed to satisfy Lester Grant's vanity, since the man was in charge of all the company drivers. "I got tricked and suffered for it, I regret it so much. I hope you'll give me another chance."

"Young man..." Lester Grant said heartily, "You have to learn from your experiences."

Matthew Carter nodded quickly. "Yes."

Lester Grant continued, "You need to keep your feet on the ground."

Matthew Carter kept nodding. "Yes."

Seeing Matthew Carter's very good attitude, Lester Grant said, "You worked pretty hard before. Now the stock market is booming, all those bastards quit to play the market, and the company is short-staffed. I'll give you another chance."

"Thank you!" Matthew Carter knew this last reason was the real one. "I'll work really hard."

Lester Grant took two forms from a drawer, scribbled on them with a pen, then made a phone call and handed the forms to Matthew Carter. "Go take care of the paperwork."

Matthew Carter took the forms and, following what he remembered, went to the second floor to complete the onboarding procedures.

With Lester Grant having called ahead, and since Matthew Carter had worked here before, it took less than half an hour for Matthew Carter to finish the onboarding. He returned to the third floor, planning to let Lester Grant know before heading out to find a place to stay and coming back to work tomorrow.

"No need to wait until tomorrow." Lester Grant didn't let Matthew Carter leave, instead tossing him a set of car keys. "You're starting work tonight. Any problem with that?"

Matthew Carter needed the job, so of course he didn't refuse. He immediately said, "No problem!"

Lester Grant handed a stack of documents to Shawn Miller. "We're short-staffed these days..."

"I'm ready anytime!" Matthew Carter said enthusiastically.

"Mm, good!" Lester Grant nodded in satisfaction. "Jonny Lee Miller is one of the company's VIP clients. Tonight, you'll be serving him."
