Chapter 4

“This family of three, coming here so late at night—could they be here for something important?” David Hamilton couldn’t quite figure out the purpose of their visit, so he didn’t dare make any sudden moves for fear of giving himself away. He simply nodded slightly at the three of them, then walked over to the parents of this body, thinking as he went, “It’s eight o’clock at night. For this family to choose this time to come, they must need some help. And they specifically called me downstairs. The other family has a girl about seventeen or eighteen, and judging by the ambiguous attitude between the two families, and the way my parents keep glancing at that girl…”

At this thought, David Hamilton drew in a sharp breath. “Could it be that this family is here to propose a marriage alliance? Seeking some kind of help through it?”

With that in mind, David Hamilton couldn’t help but take another couple of glances at the girl. Sensing David Hamilton’s gaze, the girl seemed a bit unhappy, pouting slightly and lowering her head to fiddle with her fingers.

“This girl doesn’t seem to like me—or rather, this body—very much. Looks like they knew each other before, but the relationship wasn’t great. Hmm, I’d better be careful,” David Hamilton thought to himself.

“Heh, Dali is here. Come and greet Uncle Carter and Auntie.” Seeing David Hamilton coming down the stairs, his father smiled warmly and subtly made the introductions.

His tone was very gentle, and David Hamilton felt a warmth in his heart. Even though he had memories from his previous life, it was clear that this father doted on the original owner of this body, so it was safe to assume he would treat him just as well in the future. Having someone care about him was already an immense happiness for David Hamilton.

“Hello, Uncle Carter, hello, Auntie.” David Hamilton still wasn’t sure what kind of personality this body had before. The scattered fragments in his mind only let him remember a tiny bit—like the fact that the previous owner was known for being a spendthrift.

So, to avoid giving himself away, as soon as David Hamilton sat down, he reached out to his mother and said, “Give me some money, I want to go squander it!”

“Ahem, ahem, ahem!” Before his mother could react, Uncle Carter, sitting to the side, suddenly started coughing hard. After a moment, with a helpless yet amused expression, he smiled and asked, “Dali, um, you and my Gracie have known each other since you were little—childhood sweethearts, you could say. But I wonder, how do you feel about my Gracie?”

These three, of course, were the Richard Carter family.

At this point, David Hamilton still couldn’t quite figure out the relationship between their families or how close they were, so it was best to keep a polite distance. After all, he was now an imposter in someone else’s nest—if anyone found out his true identity, who knew what would happen? So David Hamilton just nodded lightly and said, “She’s alright. She’s pretty.”

Although David Hamilton was notorious for being a wastrel, he had at least given a compliment, which made Grace Carter’s cheeks flush red.

But David Hamilton left it at that, then turned to his mother and repeated, “Give me some money, I want to go squander it!”

His mother shook her head helplessly, smiled, and gently tidied David Hamilton’s hair, which had gotten a bit messy from sleep. She said softly, “Silly child, your Uncle Carter is here to propose a marriage. You and Grace were betrothed by your grandfather back then, so you can’t object. There’s no rush to go squander money now. Anyway, your father and I are pretty good at making money, and this family business will be yours one day.”

Hearing this, David Hamilton nodded and sat down obediently, while quietly gathering information in his mind: “Looks like Uncle Carter’s family had a good relationship with ours back in the day—at least Grandpa’s generation must have been close, probably comrades-in-arms. The girl’s full name should be Grace Carter, nickname Gracie, and she’s my fiancée by arranged marriage. If the family business is definitely going to be passed down to me, that means I’m the only heir, no wonder I’m so spoiled.” He thought further, “But the previous owner of this body only knew how to squander money, definitely not a good candidate for a son-in-law. Grace Carter is so beautiful, yet she’s willing to let her father bring her here for a betrothal—so her family must be in some kind of trouble and needs our help. Most likely, it’s a financial issue or they’ve gotten into trouble with someone they can’t afford to offend. I’d guess the former is more likely.”

With this information, David Hamilton began to quietly observe Grace Carter more closely.

To be honest, Grace Carter really was a beauty in the making. From a distance, he hadn’t seen clearly, but now that he was closer, her breathtaking beauty was even more apparent.

After all, she came from a prominent family, yet she was still young and untouched by the world, her aura especially fresh and pure, natural and genuine. Her big, dark eyes were lively, her eyelashes long, and because she’d been dragged here by her parents for a betrothal against her will, she looked especially pitiful and delicate. She truly inspired sympathy—David Hamilton even felt the urge to pull her into his arms and comfort her.

Of course, that was just how he felt; in reality, he absolutely couldn’t do such a thing—he couldn’t forget that his current health stat was only 39, meaning that even a little excitement could easily send him to an early grave.
