Chapter 9

The dealer dealt the cards: each person first received a hole card, then a face-up card. Grace Carter got a ten of spades. Among the other players, some had higher cards than Grace Carter's ten of spades—two, in fact: one had a jack of clubs, and another had a king of diamonds.

Then the betting began.

Grace Carter picked out a chip marked “500” from the big pile of chips and pushed it to the center of the table. Watching this, David Hamilton's eyebrows jumped, and he whispered, “Hey, I say, Xinxin, are you really not a spendthrift? You’ve got 200,000 in chips and you’re only betting 500 at a time—what’s that about? At least make it 5,000!”

Grace Carter turned around, annoyed. “A 500 chip is already a lot, okay? Not everyone is as much of a spendthrift as you!”

David Hamilton was sweating profusely. He gritted his teeth and matched the 500, thinking that he probably wouldn’t lose much this round anyway. After all, he only had about three hours—so after everyone else had called, when the third card came, David Hamilton didn’t even look at it and immediately added a 5,000 chip to the pot.

After adding the 5,000 chip, David Hamilton glanced at his own hole card: an eight of clubs. He was quite satisfied. With a hand like this, he was definitely going to lose. Losing 5,500 in the blink of an eye—now that’s some speed, worthy of praise.

But then, David Hamilton was dumbfounded.

First, the first player passed, then the second, then the third, the fourth, and even the one with the pair of kings showing passed!

David Hamilton was sweating bullets. This wasn’t how the script was supposed to go! With such obvious cards, why weren’t they taking the chance to fleece him? He must be playing the game wrong today! That had to be it!

Meanwhile, the others were all thinking to themselves: “He bet 5,000 without even looking at his cards—he must know what he’s going to get. Only a fool would call!” “He brought such a pretty girl to play cards; you have to give him some face. Letting him win a little is fine, but that’s 5,000 points—if you call, you’ll lose at least thirty or forty thousand this round, enough to buy half a car. No need to go that big.” “Young people are so impatient. Why not play it slow? Jumping in so big right away—who can keep up?”

Chapter 0005: Never Saw That Coming

For a moment, everyone at the table had their own plans, and no one was willing to call lightly.

David Hamilton stroked his chin and thought to himself, “This is a Supreme VIP room. If this were on Earth, you’d need at least a million for a night in a place like this. But here, why are the stakes so low? I must be missing something.”

A new round had already started. Grace Carter still opened with 500, everyone called, then another 500. After three rounds, someone finally had a good hand and bet 1,000. At this point, those with weaker hands all folded.

“I get it, I get it!” Seeing this, David Hamilton suddenly understood: “I got one thing wrong—the purchasing power of money in this world! On Earth, a regular car costs 100,000 RMB, but here it might only be fifty or sixty thousand, or even thirty or forty thousand. If the RMB here is as strong as the euro on Earth, then my 5,000 bet just now was actually a lot. No wonder I scared them all off.”

Although David Hamilton knew it might not be quite that extreme, it probably wasn’t far off. Even if the RMB here wasn’t as strong as the euro, it was at least close to the dollar.

Looking at it this way, losing 100,000 in three hours wasn’t going to be so easy after all.

If he failed the task, he’d lose attribute points. If he was unlucky and lost points in sexual ability… damn, would his little buddy shrink to a pencil tip?!

Thinking of this, David Hamilton broke out in a cold sweat. His lifelong happiness was at stake—he couldn’t be careless. At this moment, his eyes were glued to the cards in Grace Carter’s hand. There were only three cards, and two of them showing were already aces. The other players all folded, and Grace Carter won another five thousand chips this round…

David Hamilton muttered desperately on the side, “We’re here to lose money, not win it! Lose money, do you get it or not?!”

Grace Carter gave a cute snort, curled her lips in triumph, and giggled, revealing two rows of sparkling white teeth. She said, “You want to lose money hanging out with me? Not that easy! Today, I just won’t let you lose!”

As she spoke, the cards were dealt again. This time was even better—out of four cards, three were kings. After one round, Grace Carter won over eight thousand more, making David Hamilton’s eyes go wide as he sucked in a breath.

In the next round, among the five cards on the table, Grace Carter had two aces and two kings, while another player had three queens. The others also had decent hands. David Hamilton’s eyes lit up, and he thought, “Call, call! Go all in! If I keep calling, I’ll lose tens of thousands this round for sure—then my task will be done!”
