Chapter 14

A bespectacled doctor in the emergency surgery department, about forty years old, listened to Brian Carter's situation and, without another word, quickly wrote out a stack of forms and handed them to the two of them. Then, with no expression, he said, "Go pay the fees and get the tests done!"

However, when they went to pay, David Brooks was startled—the emergency registration fee plus the CT scan fee actually came to over four hundred!

David Brooks's monthly living expenses were only about five hundred. Although it was the beginning of the month, the relief grain from home hadn't arrived yet, and it was a tough time. He only had a pitiful few dozen yuan in his pocket.

After emptying out all his money and counting it, he was still more than three hundred and fifty short. Helpless, he had to ask Brian Carter, "Xiaokai, do you have any money on you?"

"Money?" Brian Carter mimicked him, rummaging through his pockets. After searching all of them, he pulled out two crumpled bills. "This?"

David Brooks glanced at them and almost burst into tears, because this guy only had five yuan, and one of the bills was even missing a corner—who knew if it could even be used.

After stepping away from the payment window, the two of them just stared at each other.

David Brooks said, "Xiaokai, what do we do if we don't have enough money for the tests?"

Brian Carter shook his head and said indifferently, "Then we just don't do the tests. Anyway, I'm not really sick."

David Brooks frowned and said, "You're already like this and you say you're not sick? No way, you have to see a doctor. I can't just watch you turn into an idiot."

Brian Carter was somewhat moved and didn't argue with him anymore, just asked, "But now neither of us has any money. How are we supposed to see a doctor?"

David Brooks thought for a moment and said, "How about I call my sister and ask her to bring us some money?"

Brian Carter asked doubtfully, "Your sister?"

David Brooks said, "Emily Brooks, don't you remember? She's two years older than us. Back when she was studying accounting at the College of Finance, we used to go to her for free meals all the time."

A faint image of a beautiful, lively girl flashed through Brian Carter's mind, but when he tried to recall more clearly, his head started to hurt again. To avoid making it worse, he didn't dare think further and just replied perfunctorily, "Oh, right!"

David Brooks thought he remembered and quickly said, "Isn't she working as an accountant at a company now? I don't know if she's been paid yet, but even if she hasn't, she should still have some money on hand. It's just that if I ask her for money, I'm definitely going to get scolded! You know what my sister's temper is like—when she blows up, she's not like a normal person. When we were kids, you got beaten up by her plenty of times!"

Brian Carter couldn't help but laugh. "Why was I the one getting beaten up?"

David Brooks said irritably, "Because you were always up to no good—either trying to peek at her changing clothes or peeking at her when she went to the bathroom. Honestly, if you weren't my best friend, I would've beaten you up myself!"

Brian Carter's face turned red, but he had no way to defend himself.

David Brooks waved his hand. "Alright, alright, that's all in the past. Why are you still blushing? But I do find it strange—you've always been timid and thin-skinned, almost like a girl, so how come you were so bold around my sister?"

Brian Carter felt wronged. The more he said, the more mistakes he'd make, so he just shut his mouth again.

As David Brooks was pulling out his knockoff iPhone to make a call, Brian Carter saw that little white tiger... that is, Linda Bennett, walking over from the other side, holding a stack of forms—clearly also here to pay fees.

Brian Carter took a careful look at this woman and found that she actually looked better without clothes than with them on. However, the clothes she wore were obviously of much better quality than those of the people around her, and there was a thin platinum necklace around her neck. Looking her up and down, it seemed like she lacked everything except money.

A thought struck Brian Carter. He took the forms from David Brooks's hand and said, "Brother Bi, wait here for a moment!"

With that, he walked straight toward Linda Bennett.

Linda Bennett had seen the two of them from afar. To be honest, she really didn't want to see them again—more precisely, she didn't want to see Brian Carter. As for the polite and easily embarrassed David Brooks, she actually had a bit of a good impression. But now, seeing Brian Carter striding toward her, she couldn't help but become wary. This guy looked honest, but was actually sly as a fox—and a total pervert!

"Stop right there!" Seeing Brian Carter approach, Linda Bennett almost struck a Wing Chun pose. After shouting, she asked warily, "What do you want?"

Brian Carter handed the forms to her.

Linda Bennett took them in confusion and saw that they all had Brian Carter's name on them. She couldn't help but ask, "What does this mean?"

Brian Carter said, "Could you please pay for these as well?"

Linda Bennett immediately got angry and demanded coldly, "And why should I?"

Brian Carter calmly pointed to his own head and said, "Because you caused this."

Linda Bennett was furious and demanded, "And what about my losses? Who's going to take responsibility for those?"

Brian Carter asked in confusion, "What losses did you have?"

Linda Bennett's face flushed red, though only partly from embarrassment—mostly from anger. "I... what about the loss of you seeing everything?"
