Chapter 18

The sound reached their ears, and the three of them almost stopped in their tracks at the same time. Because they all recognized it—the familiar voice belonged to Kevin Harris.

As soon as he heard this voice, David Brooks's anger flared up, and he was about to rush into the consultation room to settle the score with him.

Seeing this, Brian Carter hurriedly grabbed him. “Mr. Brooks, wait!”

David Brooks fumed, “Little Brian, he’s already done this to you, and you’re still going to swallow your anger?”

Brian Carter shook his head and whispered, “Mr. Brooks, don’t be hasty, let’s wait a bit!”

David Brooks stomped his foot in frustration. He had never seen such a spineless man.

Chapter 009: Killing Without Paying the Price

While Brian Carter and David Brooks were whispering, another young, gentle, and mild voice came from the consultation room.

“Young Harris, don’t worry, I know you. I’ve been to your house with Dean Parker. Listen to my explanation first. Your wrist dislocation is very unusual—not only is it dislocated, but it’s also twisted in a complicated way. In all my years working in trauma, this is the first time I’ve seen something like this. Normally, wrist dislocations are caused by heavy pressure on the wrist during dorsiflexion, or when someone falls from a height and lands on their palm, with the force concentrated on the lunate joint, causing the dorsal ligaments around the lunate bone to rupture and resulting in dislocation. But you say yours was twisted by someone—honestly, that’s hard to believe!”

“Damn it, are you saying I’m lying?”

“No, what I mean is, it’s very hard for someone to focus that much force on the lunate joint, and after dislocating it, still be able to twist it…”

“Shit, why are you rambling on? I don’t understand a word. The X-rays are done, you know the situation, just give it to me straight—can you fix it or not?”

“Young Harris, all I can promise is that I’ll do my best. I’ll give you anesthesia first, then pull the joint apart and try to rotate it back into place manually, but…”

“But what? Spit it out already.”

“But if the manual reduction doesn’t work, you might have to prepare for surgery.”

“Surgery? Damn it, Brian Carter, this isn’t over. I won’t let you off!”

“So, Young Harris, you mean…”

“Cut the crap, just give me the anesthesia and fix it already.”

“Alright, alright!”

“…Ow, damn it, can’t you be a little gentler…”

“Young Harris, bear with it. Okay, the anesthesia is in. It’ll take effect in three to five minutes!”

“Hey? Where are you going?”

“Young Harris, wait a moment. This reduction needs two doctors. I’m going to get my assistant.”

“Hurry up, hurry up!”

Then, the three of them saw a doctor in a white coat, wearing a cap, mask, and glasses, walk out of a nearby ward, calling out, “Xiao Zhang, Xiao Zhang, where did you go?”

The doctor called out as he walked to the other end of the corridor.

Brian Carter glanced around and saw that the doctors’ changing room nearby had its door open, with several white coats hanging inside. An idea struck him, and he immediately walked in.

Seeing this, Linda Bennett quickly said, “Hey, what are you doing…”

Brian Carter turned back, put his finger to his lips, and made a shushing gesture.

A moment later, when Brian Carter came out, Linda Bennett and David Brooks were stunned!

The Brian Carter who walked out of the changing room was no longer Brian Carter, but looked just like a real doctor.

White coat, mask, cap, a work badge pinned to his chest—his whole body was covered up, with only his eyes showing!

If Linda Bennett and David Brooks hadn’t known in advance, they really wouldn’t have recognized him.

As Brian Carter came out, he suddenly reached for Linda Bennett’s face.

Linda Bennett instinctively dodged, but the black-rimmed square glasses on her nose had already been taken by him and put on his own face.

The two of them stared in shock, completely dumbfounded, because at this moment, Brian Carter looked exactly like the doctor who had just walked out of the consultation room!

“Please wait outside!” Brian Carter said, then swaggered into the consultation room.

David Brooks and Linda Bennett were instantly on edge, because Brian Carter would never dress up like this for no reason, and now he was going into the consultation room—could it be that he was planning…

At this, the two of them exchanged glances. Was this really the Brian Carter they knew? When did the timid and cowardly Brian Carter become so vengeful?

“Ah—” Sure enough, barely a moment after Brian Carter went in, a sharp, miserable scream like a pig being slaughtered came from the consultation room, and then Brian Carter walked out!

But he wasn’t flustered at all. He walked toward them at a steady pace, didn’t stop when he reached them, and continued around the corner.

The two of them were stunned again, because what they saw didn’t seem like Brian Carter, but rather a cold-blooded killer from TV, calmly and coolly leaving the scene after the crime.

By now, quite a few doctors and nurses had come out and rushed into the consultation room to see what had happened, and then cries of alarm started ringing out.
