Chapter 4

On Jile Island, there are no fewer than a hundred brothers from Carter Society, all of whom were carefully selected and sent over by Three Eyes. First, they can take care of William Carter's daily life, and second, they can also protect his safety.

William Carter picked up his teacup, glanced at David, and asked with a smile, “What does Brother David think of my place?”

David Harris sincerely replied, “It really feels like a paradise on earth! No wonder Brother William chooses to live here for so long—even I am a bit tempted now.”

“Haha!” William Carter laughed heartily and said, “I am a man of leisure, but Brother David is different. The vast Hongmen still needs your support!”

“Sigh!” David Harris smiled and sighed, shaking his head, “Sometimes, I really envy Brother William, with no attachments, able to leave whenever you wish.”

William Carter put down his cup, looked up, and said, “Being forced to leave—what’s there to envy about that?”

David Harris asked, “When does Brother William plan to return to the country?”

As soon as this was asked, Charles Foster, who was standing guard at the door with Henry Bennett, perked up, cocked his ear, stretched his neck, and listened intently.

Henry Bennett glanced at him with interest and asked with a smile, “How have you been lately, Brother Charles?”

Charles Foster glanced at him from the corner of his eye, not bothering to respond at all. Henry Bennett was not surprised in the least, nor did he feel awkward. If Charles Foster actually turned around and chatted with him cheerfully, that would be what truly surprised him! He shrugged and continued on his own, “I can see Brother David has put on some weight and looks exceptionally well. You must have been living quite comfortably lately!”

Charles Foster was listening to William Carter and David Harris talk, but Henry Bennett kept chattering in his ear, making him impatient. His sword-like brows shot up as he glared fiercely at him.

Henry Bennett didn’t take his annoyance to heart, grinning, “After all this time, Brother Charles’s gaze is still so cold…”

Charles Foster felt like he was about to lose his mind. He had never met anyone with such a thick skin. His departure from Hongmen might have had something to do with Henry Bennett.

William Carter didn’t answer David Harris’s question right away. Instead, he walked to the glass wall, gazed at the brightly colored tropical fish outside, and gently tapped the wall with his index finger.

David Harris said, “With Brother William’s abilities, returning to the country is no longer a problem. Although Central tried to kill you once, I think you’ll handle it well—or maybe you already have.”

“Heh heh!” William Carter smiled without replying. The plane he was supposed to take malfunctioned and crashed halfway, with no survivors on board. This was a political maneuver by Central, and everyone could see it. Central wanted to use William Carter’s death to restore normal relations with Japan. But people only know part of the story, not the whole truth. William Carter isn’t a god—how could he have known in advance that the plane would crash?! Even someone as high-ranking as Edward King in the political department didn’t know the inside story.

If he wanted to return to the country, Central was indeed no longer an obstacle. The reason he was still staying on this small island was simply because he hadn’t decided to leave yet.

Sensing that William Carter didn’t want to talk about it, David Harris didn’t press further. He took a sip of tea and said quietly, “Brother William, have you ever heard of the Green Gang?”

William Carter turned around and smiled, “I’ve heard Brian mention it.”

David Harris said, “Then do you know that the Green Gang challenged Hongmen in Taiwan?”

William Carter didn’t react much after hearing this, but Charles Foster shuddered, almost doubting his own ears. He knew very well how powerful Tai Hongmen was, possessing ‘A Red Leaf Flies South’! For a super assassin group like Red Leaf under Tai Hongmen to be challenged by the Green Gang—if anyone else had said this, he would have laughed three times in mockery. Would David Harris lie? Of course not. You wouldn’t even hear an exaggeration from him. Charles Foster subconsciously clenched his fist.

William Carter, though far from United States and living on an isolated island, was by no means out of touch with the underworld and jianghu affairs in United States. No matter what happened, intelligence from Anzu would reach him at the first moment. So, he wasn’t surprised that David Harris came to see him.

He said calmly, “For Tai Hongmen to be challenged by the Green Gang—that’s truly unexpected.”

David Harris said seriously, “Tai Hongmen and I have always had a good relationship. I’m sure Brother William already knows this.”

William Carter nodded. During the north-south conflict, Red Leaf of Tai Hongmen had helped Nan Hongmen. Although their contribution wasn’t huge, sending people during such a sensitive period was undoubtedly a signal to all Hongmen branches worldwide that Tai Hongmen stood with Nan Hongmen.

David Harris said, “Now, the current head of Tai Hongmen, Steven Morgan, has fled here with his remaining forces, hoping I can help him eliminate the Green Gang’s influence in Taiwan.”

William Carter asked, “Did you agree?”

David Harris shook his head, “Not yet. After all, Hongmen isn’t just me. That’s exactly why I came here to discuss it with Brother William.”
