Carter Society dispatched ten jeeps, with more than forty people following closely behind the Menghu Gang. Leading the team were Henry Bennett and Charles Foster.
The vehicles were not moving at full speed. According to William Carter's instructions, they were only to follow from a distance—not too close, but not too far either—just enough so that the other side couldn't spot their movements.
In this way, they pursued for over four hundred kilometers, and the sky at the horizon was gradually brightening. In the car, Charles Foster was growing impatient, anxiously rubbing his palms together. He asked Henry Bennett, who was sitting beside him, “Old Jiang, hasn't Dong-ge given the order to attack yet?”
Henry Bennett instinctively touched the phone in his pocket and shook his head. “Not yet!”
Charles Foster glanced at his watch—it was already three o'clock. He looked up at the sky, and said with some concern, “It's almost dawn. If we don't act soon, we might lose our chance.” As he spoke, he took out the map, pointing at it as he continued, “Based on our route, we might already be very close to Katherine. If we wait until the Menghu Gang enters the city, how are we supposed to make a move?! Old Sen, are you sure there's nothing wrong with your phone? Maybe Dong-ge called and you didn't hear it, or maybe your phone doesn't have a signal at all!”
Henry Bennett took out his phone, glanced at it, and said expressionlessly, “My phone has full signal. Dong-ge hasn't called at all.”
Charles Foster responded with an “Oh,” muttering, “Could Dong-ge have overlooked something? How about we catch up first, take them out, and explain to Dong-ge afterwards?”
With a chuckle, Henry Bennett's usually stern face showed a rare smile. He patted Charles Foster's shoulder and said, “Brother Ren, don't worry. We've been with Dong-ge for so long—when has he ever made a mistake? Be patient, let's wait a bit longer!”
“Sigh!” Charles Foster let out a sigh, barely managing to suppress his anxious mood.
Around four in the morning, the vehicles ahead suddenly stopped. A young man jumped out of the lead car and hurried over to the jeep where Henry Bennett and Charles Foster were. He said, “Brother Jiang, the Menghu Gang has stopped.”
“They've stopped?” Charles Foster frowned and interjected, “Why did they stop?”
The young man glanced at Charles Foster, then turned to Henry Bennett and said, “It looks like the Menghu Gang is taking a break.” As he spoke, he handed the military binoculars hanging from his neck to Henry Bennett.
Henry Bennett took them and looked ahead. After a while, he put down the binoculars and handed them to Charles Foster, who was impatiently craning his neck to see. The latter thanked him, stood up straight in the jeep, and looked into the distance. Although the sky was still a bit dim, the binoculars had a high magnification, so he could see clearly even several kilometers away. He saw members of the Menghu Gang either refueling their cars with oil drums, getting out to sit by the roadside and rest, or standing in small groups chatting by their vehicles. After watching, he was overjoyed and said to Henry Bennett, “Old Jiang, this is a great opportunity! The Menghu Gang thinks they're close to Katherine and that there's no more danger, so they've let their guard down. If we strike now, we'll get twice the result with half the effort!”
Of course, Henry Bennett understood this logic as well. He nodded, then shook his head, saying, “But Dong-ge hasn't given the order yet!”
“Dong-ge isn't even here, he…” Charles Foster was about to say, “He can't possibly know the situation on the ground.” But before he could finish, Henry Bennett's phone suddenly rang. Instantly alert, Henry Bennett quickly took out his phone. The caller ID showed William Carter's number. He answered immediately, and before he could speak, William Carter's firm yet gentle voice came through the phone: “Old Sen, do it. Now!”
“Understood!” Henry Bennett replied, and quickly signaled the attack gesture to the vehicles in front and behind. The ten jeeps started up again, this time at full speed. They shot forward like arrows leaving the bow, and in the blink of an eye, they were upon the Menghu Gang's convoy.
The Menghu Gang had been driving all night, on edge the whole time, afraid that William Carter would catch up. But the journey had been smooth and uneventful, and now that they had entered the Katherine area, where there were many of their own people, their nerves finally relaxed and the tension melted away. Fatigue swept over them. After some discussion, they decided to rest for a while. Since they were already safe, they would wait until daylight to enter the city, so as not to attract attention.
【A gang is a gang after all—the more it tries to keep a low profile, the darker its true nature!】
But they had barely rested for two minutes when suddenly a roar came from behind. Looking up, they saw dust billowing on the highway, as if a dragon of earth was bursting out from underground and churning along the road. What was going on? At first, the Menghu Gang members didn't react, staring blankly for a moment. Then a burly man shouted, “Not good! It might be William Carter catching up!【俄】” As he spoke, he slapped the car body repeatedly and shouted, “Everyone, grab your weapons and get ready to fight!【俄】” As he spoke, he pulled a pistol from under his jacket.
His guess was correct, but his warning came too late. By the time the Menghu Gang members snapped out of it and scrambled to grab their guns from the vehicles, the ten jeeps had already charged right up to them, and they had lost the best opportunity to shoot.
