Chapter 4

Henry Sutton rubbed his temples, inevitably troubled.

If he knew nothing of immortals, that would be one thing. Perhaps he could simply settle down in this world, relying on some novelties from modern society, and probably live quite prosperously.

Not to mention conquering the world or becoming a marquis or prime minister, but at the very least, he could live a life free from want, barely making it as a wealthy man.

But at this very moment, he had obtained the inheritance of an immortal.

At this very moment, he was deeply aware that there was always a higher realm.

Knowing this, how could he still squat at the bottom of a well, viewing the sky from its narrow opening?

Why not ascend to the heavens and become a celestial being?

“An immortal fate of eternal life, the power to move mountains and fill seas.”

Henry Sutton closed his eyes slightly, thinking to himself, “No matter what glory and wealth, what passionate brilliance you have in the mortal world, compared to this, it’s all just fleeting clouds. After a few decades, in the end, dust returns to dust, earth to earth... Only the path of immortality can last forever.”

“And for those beyond the mortal world, with a mere flip of the hand, they can burn the sky and boil the sea. No matter how great your achievements among mortals, you’re still like an ant. An immortal only needs to wave a hand to make you vanish into thin air.”

When it came to the word “immortal,” Henry Sutton had extremely complex feelings.

Top of the imperial exam? Wealth and glory? The throne itself?

Before the prospect of immortality, these seemed so trivial.

And with immortality, he would have endless time, boundless abilities, and could easily obtain all of these.

“Am I really supposed to just guard these immortal arts, live as an ordinary commoner, muddling through a lifetime, then go through the cycle of birth, aging, sickness, and death, ending up as a pile of dry bones?”

“I wonder if there’s even a sixfold cycle of reincarnation here. Will I be able to transmigrate back in my next life?”

As Henry Sutton thought this, he looked up at the sky.

He suddenly remembered that Lord Lu Ya was a figure from myth and legend.

And this world, too, had its own myths and legends.

Judging from the talisman water at the Thunder God Temple, there were indeed gods and buddhas in this world.

So, could he travel to famous mountains, seeking immortals and the Dao?

However, even if you went through all kinds of hardships, you might not truly find an immortal.

Furthermore, even if you did find one, the immortal might not be willing to teach you.

“Let’s not think about it for now…”

Henry Sutton let his thoughts run wild for a while, but eventually his mind returned to the present.

No matter what the future held, for now, he had to nurse this sickly body back to health.

Knock, knock, knock!

Just then, the sound of knocking came from outside the courtyard.

“Henry Sutton... Henry Sutton...”

It was the voice of a young boy.

Henry Sutton was a bit puzzled and went to open the door.

Standing at the door was a boy in tattered clothes, panting as he said, “Henry Sutton, why are you still at home?”

Hearing this, Henry Sutton smiled and said, “Hey, why can’t I be at home?”

The boy seemed to have run in a hurry. He caught his breath a few times, holding onto the doorframe, and said, “Your sister has fallen ill.”

These words struck his ears like a thunderclap.

Henry Sutton was stunned for a moment.

“What?”

After a while, he snapped out of it, his hands instinctively reaching out to grip the boy’s shoulders, asking anxiously, “What do you mean, fallen ill?”

“I... I don’t know either...”

The boy was young and couldn’t explain clearly, so Henry Sutton could only get the gist of it.

Apparently, his cousin had fainted on the way to the Thunder Temple to fulfill a vow. Fortunately, there were many passersby, all neighbors and villagers, who took her to the medicine hall.

But for some reason, even the medicine hall didn’t dare treat her. It was said she was possessed by an evil wind, so now she had been sent to the Thunder God Temple.

“The medicine hall didn’t dare treat her and sent her to the temple?”

Henry Sutton was furious, cursing inwardly, “What nonsense evil wind? What kind of quack doctor is this?”

He got the general idea, casually promised the boy a string of candied hawthorns, and hurried off to the Thunder God Temple.

...

The temple was about two or three li away—not far.

But for Henry Sutton’s body, after running less than half a li, he was drenched in sweat, almost out of breath, and his vision was going dark.

From afar, he could see the temple.

It wasn’t deep in the mountains or in an old forest, but right on the street.

At the end of the street, the ancient temple sat quietly.

It wasn’t spacious or elegant, only marked by the wear of time.

As he got closer, he could smell the incense.

Henry Sutton didn’t pay much attention and rushed in through the main gate.

Inside were many people, many familiar and unfamiliar faces.

“Henry Sutton?”

“What are you doing here?”

“Your sister’s in trouble...”

Neighbors, aunts, and uncles all started chattering and surrounded him.

Henry Sutton immediately felt a headache coming on.

Just then, someone called out, “Has the family of that young lady arrived?”

Henry Sutton quickly replied, “Here, here!”

He saw the crowd ahead part, and a young man in a blue robe walked out, saying to Henry Sutton, “Ethan Woods requests your presence.”

Ethan Woods was the temple’s caretaker.

This young man seemed to be his junior.

“Come with me.”
