Chapter 20

Henry Sutton bowed and said, “Yes.”

Ethan Woods paused for a moment and said, “But in the near future, you must be extra careful.”

Henry Sutton felt a chill in his heart and said, “What do you mean, Ethan Woods?”

Ethan Woods said, “If my guess is correct, that man in the black robe wasn’t actually after your cousin.”

Henry Sutton took a deep breath and said, “He was after me?”

Ethan Woods nodded and said, “As an outsider cultivator, I originally thought he was just passing through and targeted your cousin. But during the duel, he mentioned your Su family name. Clearly, he knows about you. This is not an ordinary matter…”

“This…” Henry Sutton forced a bitter smile, touching his face, and said wryly, “He hurt my cousin, and since she and I rely on each other, a little investigation would reveal my name. Isn’t that within reason?”

Ethan Woods said calmly, “When you see an ant by the roadside and are about to crush it, do you bother to check if it has any friends or family?”

“Uh…”

Henry Sutton was momentarily speechless.

That black-robed man’s attitude truly treated others as ants, lawless and arrogant. He would never bother to check someone’s name—unless he already knew this Su family boy.

“The fact that he knows your name is a clue.”

Ethan Woods said, “I’ll ask the county magistrate to investigate. You should also be vigilant, in case of any more surprises.”

Henry Sutton was still shocked that Ethan Woods could actually ask the county magistrate for help, but then he remembered that Ethan Woods was no ordinary person—he was the temple keeper who could interpret omens and grant blessings. In this era, he was almost like a living immortal.

In ancient times like these, both officials and merchants revered tales of immortals and had great faith in feng shui and fate.

So, it wasn’t so strange for Ethan Woods to have connections with the authorities.

Not to mention this era—even in his previous life, in a technological age where superstition had been debunked and science flourished, there were still plenty of high-ranking officials who believed in feng shui and fate.

“Go on, if the truth comes to light, I’ll let you know.” Ethan Woods waved his hand.

“Thank you, Ethan Woods.” Henry Sutton bowed.

“No need to thank me. Since this happened within the temple’s domain, and your cousin is a devotee of the Thunder God, now that it involves cultivators, it’s my duty to look into it.”

“No matter what, I will always remember your kindness, Ethan Woods.”

“All right, go on home.”

Henry Sutton took the antidote and went to the quiet room.

Looking at the frail woman lying unconscious on the bed, he felt pity and quickly helped his cousin take the antidote.

By noon, his cousin gradually woke up. Henry Sutton gave her a brief explanation, then helped her thank Ethan Woods.

That night, Henry Sutton and his cousin bid farewell to Ethan Woods and finally returned home.

“This calamity is finally over.”

Henry Sutton thought to himself, letting out a slow breath.

But in the next moment, he sensed something was off.

Because he felt no discomfort today.

He had supported his cousin all the way home, yet hadn’t felt the slightest bit out of breath.

His eyes narrowed slightly, and he clenched his fists.

He wasn’t exactly strong, but he was no longer as frail as before.

“A wisp of the master’s yin spirit has strengthened my soul.”

“A bowl of venom from the gu snake has nourished my body.”

“Internal and external nourishment—could it be that my chronic weakness is actually showing signs of recovery?”

The Su family.

It had been three days since that incident.

His cousin had already woken up, but she was still weak and could barely take care of herself.

Fortunately, Henry Sutton was no longer the sickly boy who would faint just from nodding his head. With benefits both inside and out, he was now healthy and had taken over all the chores at home.

Carrying water, chopping wood, cooking, washing clothes—though it was tiring and unfamiliar, it wasn’t really that hard once he got down to it.

It was just that, when it came to cooking, his lack of experience made the food rather hard to swallow.

“Xiaoting…” His cousin saw him carrying water in and tried to get up to help.

“Jie, take it easy. Let me bring the water in first.” Henry Sutton hurried in, put down the water, and finally breathed a sigh of relief.

“Xiaoting, you’ve just recovered. Don’t overexert yourself.” His cousin looked at him with concern.

“What’s tiring about this? Haven’t you been taking care of me like this all these years?” Henry Sutton wiped his sweat.

“Xiaoting…” His cousin called softly.

“Hmm?”

“It’s really nice.” His cousin smiled.

Henry Sutton paused for a moment, not knowing how to respond.

His cousin lay on the bed, smiling gently. Her features were delicate and beautiful. Though her face was pale, it made her look even more pitiful.

Seeing the contented smile on her face, Henry Sutton suddenly felt a mix of emotions.

Really nice?

To her, was this the life she was satisfied with?

Seeing Henry Sutton recover, seeing him able to help support the family with her—was that enough?

For her, was this all she needed?

Henry Sutton fell silent, his gaze drifting. Then he exhaled and smiled, “It’s all right. Things will only get better.”

His cousin was still very weak, so Henry Sutton didn’t dare disturb her. After finishing his chores, he went out into the yard.

Henry Sutton wiped his sweat, looked up at the sky, and remained silent.
