Chapter 6

“But you have Smite and the opponent doesn’t, so you still have a good chance to get it. Why did you retreat?” the teenager continued. Smite is a summoner spell, usually only taken by jungle heroes. This skill deals massive true damage to jungle monsters, giving a significant advantage in securing last hits. However, Eric Foster didn’t use this advantage to contest the blue buff at all and simply backed off.

“Who are you?” Eric Foster looked the teenager up and down, the one who was giving him game advice.

“Oh, I’m looking for Brian Bennett. Isn’t this his office?” the teenager said, finally shifting his gaze away from Eric Foster’s phone.

“He went out, he’s not here.” After saying this, Eric Foster turned back to continue his match. Having lost the blue buff, his jungle start was behind. Lanling King pitifully cleared the remaining jungle monsters, then leached a wave of minions from a teammate, finally managing to reach level 4. He immediately activated Lanling King’s ultimate—third skill, Secret Technique: Stealth Assault, entering stealth mode and sneaking toward the enemy’s blue side.

“The enemy jungler started red. If you want to invade, you should go to the red side now.” Suddenly, another comment came from behind.

“You’re still here?” Startled again, Eric Foster exclaimed, but quickly refocused on the game. “How do you know he started red?”

“When you checked mid lane vision just now, he passed by. Didn’t you notice the buff on him?” the teenager replied.

“Of course I noticed, but who said I was going to gank him? I’m going to invade their blue buff. Didn’t you see I’m almost out of mana?” Eric Foster stuck to his Lanling King’s route.

“If the enemy started red, then their blue buff won’t respawn for at least 60 seconds. You might as well take your own blue, it should be up soon,” the teenager said.

“What do you know? I’m going to ambush him and take both the blue buff and his head!” Eric Foster declared.

“Ambush for 60 seconds?” The teenager was quite puzzled. Not to mention the crucial early game, even in the mid to late game, spending 60 seconds camping in a bush is a huge waste—who would play like that?

But before he finished speaking, Eric Foster’s Lanling King ran into the enemy jungler, Li Bai, in the river.

“See that?” Eric Foster said smugly, and Lanling King immediately closed in on Li Bai.

“Li Bai has his ultimate!” The teenager saw the faint glow on Li Bai’s sword and quickly reminded Eric Foster. But Eric Foster’s Lanling King had already started his attack: Shadow Dagger flew toward Li Bai, followed by the first skill, Secret Technique: Clone, summoning a shadow clone to strike at Li Bai together.

A sudden attack from stealth is indeed hard to defend against, but as soon as Li Bai was hit by the Shadow Dagger, he instantly used his second skill, Godlike Brushwork. His sword transformed into the Azure Lotus Sword Array, protecting him from being hit by Lanling King and his clone. Then he unleashed his ultimate, Azure Lotus Sword Song, turning into sword energy and slashing rapidly at Lanling King.

“Damn!” Taking two skills in a row while his own clone’s damage didn’t land, Eric Foster cried out. Lanling King’s ultimate, Stealth Assault, was used again, leaving the teenager behind speechless.

When first activated, Stealth Assault puts Lanling King into a 30-second stealth state after 1.5 seconds. During this time, activating it again makes Lanling King dash in the chosen direction. The problem was, Li Bai was still in the middle of casting his ultimate, Azure Lotus Sword Song, and just like when using Godlike Brushwork, he was untargetable and immune to attacks. Using Stealth Assault again at this moment was as good as missing completely.

Out of three attack skills, Lanling King missed two, only slowing Li Bai with Shadow Dagger. But Li Bai’s first skill, Bring in the Wine, comes with a dash. He chased after the fleeing Lanling King, dashing forward repeatedly. Eric Foster was at a loss, and finally got taken down by a single sword strike.

“Damn!” Eric Foster was extremely frustrated, but this time it was entirely his own misplay—he couldn’t blame his teammates. He immediately shot a resentful glare at the teenager behind him.

“What are you yelling for? Just watch!” Eric Foster snapped.

“You should have waited until Li Bai’s ultimate was restricted before going in,” the teenager said. Li Bai’s ultimate, Azure Lotus Sword Song, is usually in a restricted state. Only after landing the fourth basic attack within three seconds to trigger the passive, Wandering Swordsman, does Azure Lotus Sword Song become unrestricted. But this only lasts five seconds, after which it returns to the restricted state.

“How am I supposed to know if his ultimate is restricted?” Eric Foster replied irritably.

“When it’s unrestricted, the sword glows!” The teenager was surprised that Eric Foster would even ask this.

“Who pays attention to details like that? Seriously, who are you?” Eric Foster was startled. He had played nearly a thousand games, yet didn’t know this detail about Li Bai’s ultimate. He silently made a mental note, but still tried to save face. Still, he finally felt a bit curious about the teenager.

“My name is Adam Bennett, I’m here to see my brother Brian Bennett,” the teenager said.

“Huh? You’re Brian Bennett’s younger brother! No wonder, no wonder!” Hearing Adam Bennett introduce himself, Eric Foster suddenly understood. It made perfect sense to him that Adam Bennett could offer so much in-game advice. After all, the brother of a pro player must really know the game.

“Brian Bennett said he was going to pick you up. Didn’t you run into him?” Eric Foster asked after his realization.
