Chapter 12

To him, this was truly an unprecedented experience.

He had never been threatened face-to-face by anyone like this before, especially not by his own student, and especially not in the police station, right in front of the Police Chief.

William Thompson leaned back in his chair, glancing at him sideways with a roguish look all over his face.

In that instant, his expression was no different from that of Knife-face and Four-eyes.

People are inherently changeable.

No one ever set the rule that some people are born troublemakers and others are born good kids.

Aside from having excellent grades, William Thompson was actually far from meeting the standards of a model student.

Director Clark was so intimidated by William Thompson's gaze that his hair stood on end. In fact, Director Clark was the typical type who was tough on the outside but weak on the inside. Usually, he would swagger in front of students, but the moment he saw troublemakers like Knife-face and Four-eyes, he would get scared stiff.

Now that William Thompson was giving him the same look, Director Clark immediately put on a fierce front but was weak inside, not daring to meet William Thompson's eyes. He turned to the Police Chief and called out, "Chief Reed, look at this, this is outrageous, simply outrageous..."

Chief Reed looked to be about forty-two or forty-three, with a good appearance—tall, imposing, and quite dignified. However, his complexion was a bit greenish, and his eyes were unfocused, clearly showing signs of overindulgence in alcohol and women.

In front of these ordinary folks, Chief Reed still had a psychological advantage. He immediately grunted, glared at William Thompson, and barked, "So young and already so unruly? Do you think you can do whatever you want?"

William Thompson chuckled, leaned back, and shut his mouth. But his expression said it all.

Chief Reed felt a surge of anger in his chest, his face turning gloomy. He slammed the table hard and shouted, "Kid, don't think I can't handle you. Do you believe I can send you to three years of re-education through labor?"

"I believe you. Why wouldn't I?"

William Thompson grinned, but it was impossible to tell if he really believed it or not.

Ryan Carter's eyebrows furrowed slightly.

The movement was subtle, but Chief Reed caught it right away. In fact, from start to finish, most of Chief Reed's attention had been on Ryan Carter. Since this kid walked into the meeting room, he hadn't said a single word, like a wooden statue. Yet that calm and composed demeanor made it clear at a glance that, between him and William Thompson, he was the real leader.

Yet it was always William Thompson who spoke, and Ryan Carter hadn't uttered a single word.

He'd seen arrogant kids before, but never one this arrogant.

Chief Reed really couldn't stand the sight of him!

Even more than he couldn't stand William Thompson.

Anyone who didn't know better would think he was someone important.

But Chief Reed was no fool. From Director Clark's attitude, it was obvious—these two kids were just "commoners." If they had any connections or backing at all, that old fox Director Clark wouldn't be acting like this.

Two mountain kids from the countryside—what could they possibly do?

"Hey, you, why aren't you saying anything?"

Chief Reed turned away from William Thompson, pointed straight at Ryan Carter, and demanded harshly.

Ryan Carter didn't get angry. He just looked calmly at Chief Reed and asked softly, "Chief, what do you want me to say?"

The anger in Chief Reed's chest somehow turned into a blaze that he couldn't suppress. He roared, "You've committed an offense—shouldn't you at least show some attitude?"

Ryan Carter smiled lightly and said, "The facts are clear, everything is obvious. Our attitude doesn't really matter. As for how to handle it, Chief, you already know what you're going to do, don't you?"

"I don't need you to tell me how to do my job."

Chief Reed bellowed.

The calmer Ryan Carter was, the angrier Chief Reed became.

His impressive authority couldn't even intimidate a high school junior from the countryside—utterly outrageous.

"Looks like no one ever taught you how to behave. Well, I'll give you a good lesson now. Olivia Miller, cuff them! Detain them for fifteen days for public security!"

Chief Reed slammed his palm down hard on the table.

Even Director Clark, Knife-face, and Four-eyes were all startled, intimidated by Chief Reed's authority.

But Ryan Carter still didn't care at all. He leaned back slightly, not even glancing in Chief Reed's direction, as if the decision had nothing to do with him.

"Chief..."

Olivia Harris was stunned for a moment. Clearly, Chief Reed's decision had taken her by surprise.

That arrogant Ryan Carter, though blunt in his words and able to back people into a corner, was still just stating the facts. It was a clear-cut matter—how could it be handled like this?

This was just bullying.

"Cuff them!"

Chief Reed roared again, slamming the table so hard that the cup on it jumped.

Olivia Harris's eyebrows arched slightly, and a clear trace of displeasure flashed across her face. But with so many people present, she still had to give Chief Reed some face.

If it were in private, Chief Reed would never dare slam the table at her.

"You can't do this!"
