Chapter 18

Hugh Miller held himself back for a moment, and in the next instant, the sullen look on his face was replaced by a smile. The gloom vanished without a trace, and he looked at Ryan Carter with a beaming expression, speaking gently: “Not bad, young man, you’ve got guts. My daughter’s plea for you wasn’t in vain. Alright, I’ll take another step back. The marriage arrangement between the Jiang and Ye families—we won’t mention it again. Ethan Foster can focus on her studies and take her college entrance exams as she should. I guarantee no one will bother her again. But debts must be repaid—this is only fair. I can’t be too partial, right? As long as the Ye family pays back the money, this matter is over, and no one is allowed to bring it up again.”

With that, Hugh Miller waved his hand, as if making a final decision.

Ryan Carter’s lips curled into that faint mocking smile once more. He exchanged a glance with William Thompson, stood up, and walked straight out of the conference room, not willing to say another word to Hugh Miller.

At the doorway, Ryan Carter stopped again. His eyes flashed like lightning as he swept a glance at Knife-face. Caught off guard, Knife-face shuddered slightly, instinctively shrinking his neck, then realizing his mistake, hurriedly straightened up.

“Jiang Hongsheng, I’m warning you—today was just a small lesson. If you dare bother Ethan Foster again, I’ll ruin you!”

Ryan Carter said calmly, every word clear as day.

“You… I’m not afraid of you…”

Knife-face stiffened his neck and shouted, but anyone could hear the fear in his voice.

A fierce murderous aura suddenly burst from Ryan Carter, instantly forcing Knife-face’s remaining words back down his throat. His face turned ashen, and he could barely breathe.

At that moment, Lily Bennett moved, gliding forward to stand in front of Hugh Miller, completely shielding him.

That was all—no further action.

Almost simultaneously, a shadow flickered. Ryan Carter’s figure vanished from where he stood and appeared in front of Knife-face in a flash. Knife-face only saw a cold gleam before his eyes, didn’t even have time to cry out, and felt a chill on his neck.

That dazzling, piercing flash was like a startled glimpse of a swan—gone in an instant. Even Lily Bennett couldn’t clearly see what kind of weapon it was. In another flash, Ryan Carter was back where he started.

With a “clang,” Knife-face fell flat on his back, face ashen, actually fainting from fright.

At this moment, naturally no one paid attention to the small wound and faint traces of blood on his neck.

“Let’s go.”

Ryan Carter didn’t linger, called out to Ethan Foster, and strode out the door.

“Hey, you, stop right there…”

Only now did Chief Reed snap out of it, shouting angrily.

This was the police station—he was supposed to be in charge. But after Hugh Miller arrived, Chief Reed had automatically handed over authority and placed himself as a bystander, momentarily at a loss.

Watching those two youngsters swagger out, Chief Reed finally felt something was off.

Ryan Carter didn’t even look back, leaving without hesitation.

In fact, Chief Reed only shouted that one sentence before turning to look at Hugh Miller, waiting for his instructions.

Hugh Miller’s face turned ashen, his eyes blazing with anger. The sight made Chief Reed’s heart tremble, and he quickly lowered his head, not daring to meet his gaze. In all these years, probably no one had ever dared to be so arrogant and rude in front of Hugh Miller.

What arrogance!

But next, everyone once again witnessed the “smiling tiger’s” face-changing skills.

Hugh Miller burst out laughing.

“Interesting, interesting, ha! These two little punks really do have some guts…”

He sounded genuinely amused, with not a trace of displeasure.

Even so, Chief Reed was still a bit unwilling, and asked gloomily from the side, “We’re just letting it go like this?”

“I promised my daughter—what else can I do?”

Hugh Miller replied with a smile.

“But… Director Clark, for such troublemaking students, shouldn’t your school take some measures? If every student had this kind of attitude, wouldn’t the school be in chaos?”

When Hugh Miller stepped in, Director Clark had been tactful, staying silent on the sidelines, not saying a word even when Ryan Carter put Hugh Miller on the spot.

To be fair, Director Clark was quite self-aware.

Upon hearing this, he straightened up as if receiving orders from a superior, and said loudly, “Mr. Miller is absolutely right. The school cannot tolerate such troublemaking students. Please rest assured, Mr. Miller, our school will take action.”

“That’s good. Thank you for your hard work, Director Clark.”

“Not at all, Mr. Miller, you’re too kind—it’s no trouble at all…”

Director Clark nodded and bowed repeatedly as he spoke.

“Ryan Carter, William Thompson, thank you…”

Outside the police station, Ethan Foster hurried a few steps to catch up with Ryan Carter and William Thompson, speaking timidly but with genuine sincerity.

Ryan Carter smiled and said softly, “It’s nothing—they went too far.”

William Thompson couldn’t help but ask, “Ethan Foster, what exactly is going on?”
