Just like that, William Carter entered the notorious No. 1 High School as the city’s top student, bringing along more than a hundred followers. William Carter finally ended his junior high school years, which had changed his fate, and began a new chapter in his life.
During the summer break before high school, William Carter didn’t idle around. Ever since he fought with Sam, he realized that to make a name for himself in society, brains and a ruthless heart weren’t enough—he also needed a strong body. Over the course of more than two months, William Carter joined a Sanda (Chinese kickboxing) class and a martial arts class, working out whenever he had free time. Even Sam admired his perseverance. After spending so much time together, he understood William Carter’s personality: either don’t do it at all, or do it the best. A month later, William Carter brought Sam to the Sanda class. They put on boxing gloves and sparred one-on-one. No one knew who lost, but both of them ended up badly bruised.
Half a month later, William Carter called Sam again. This time, Sarah Thompson and George Miller came along, but were kept outside. When Sam came out with a swollen eye, the two pressed him for the result. Sam only said, “Dong-ge is really talented in sports!” and then walked away.
Another half month passed, and when William Carter looked for Sam again, Sam, whose eyes were still a bit swollen, lay on the ground and refused to go no matter what… William Carter had no choice but to try bribing him: “If you go, I’ll treat you to dinner tonight, and you can pick the place.” Sam closed his eyes and said, “No matter what you say, I’m not going. If I lose my life, how could I eat dinner?” Sarah Thompson, unable to resist the temptation, volunteered to spar with William Carter. Sam watched Sarah Thompson walk away with a look of pity, shaking his head and thinking to himself: Take care, brother! The result was that during dinner that night, Sarah Thompson spat out two molars.
From then on, whenever William Carter looked for someone to spar with, there was absolutely no one within five meters of him. Sam once said, “If Dong-ge ever stops mixing in the underworld, he could run the 100-meter dash. His explosive power is perfect for that sport.” Sarah Thompson nodded in deep agreement.
More than two months passed, and William Carter was still the same as before, just a bit taller, but still looked rather thin and weak.
No. 1 High School was quite far from William Carter’s home, so he had to ride his bike to school. When he arrived at the school gate, the first thing he saw was a broken door. The cement pillars on both sides of the gate were covered with flyers. Looking closer, they read, “No need to worry if you have an STD…” Seriously? Even ads like this are posted at the school gate? William Carter shook his head and walked into the school. He saw an old man sitting in the gatehouse reading a newspaper. William Carter walked over and asked, “Sir, I’m a new student here. Could you tell me where to register?”
The old man put down his newspaper, looked at William Carter, and said loudly, “What did you say? I didn’t hear you, speak up!” William Carter had to raise his voice: “I said, where do new students register?”
“What? You’re about to be late! Why are you talking to me instead of hurrying to class?!” The old man shook his head and went back to reading his newspaper.
William Carter almost coughed up blood. With a gatekeeper like this, how could the school not be chaotic? He ignored the old man and pushed his bike into the school. After a few steps, the roar of a motorcycle sounded behind him. William Carter didn’t have time to think and instinctively jumped to the side, his bike falling to the ground. A motorcycle sped past him and stopped not far ahead. The rider was dressed in denim, took off her helmet, and a head of jet-black hair flew in the air as she turned to look at William Carter. ‘So beautiful,’ William Carter realized the rider was a girl. Her oval face was framed by two slender, arched eyebrows, and below them were bright, black pearl-like eyes. Her luscious red lips were moving as she spoke.
“Are you blind? Don’t you watch where you’re going?”
Her voice was pleasant, but her words left William Carter with no mood to appreciate her beauty. He said, aggrieved, “It seems like you were the one who rode over here first! How come you’re blaming me?”
The girl looked William Carter up and down. His build was average, his looks were rather delicate, but his eyes were especially striking—long, narrow, and particularly bright. He gave off a unique impression.
Seeing the girl staring at him, William Carter felt a bit embarrassed. “Is there something wrong with me, classmate?”
William Carter’s voice interrupted the girl’s thoughts. Her cheeks flushed slightly as she got off the motorcycle and walked over. “Are you a new student?”
William Carter nodded. He noticed that the girl had a great figure, about 1.7 meters tall, almost as tall as he was. With her slender build, William Carter finally understood the meaning of “graceful and elegant.”
“If you’re a new student, you should call me ‘senior,’ not ‘classmate.’ You look pretty skinny—if anyone bullies you in the future, just come find your senior, I’ll stand up for you!” As she spoke, the girl patted William Carter’s head. She herself didn’t know why, but seeing this delicate-looking boy, she just wanted to get close to him and protect him. Maybe it was his thinness that triggered her protective instincts! That’s how the girl explained it to herself. William Carter didn’t know whether to laugh or cry—this girl was really something else. But he still obediently nodded, “Yes, thank you, senior. I’ll remember that!”
