Chapter 17

“Next, let’s have our school’s Dean of Students say a few words. Um, everyone, please give a round of applause to welcome him!” The principal finally finished his long speech, of which sixty percent was about the school’s history, thirty percent about the prospects of joining the school, and the remaining ten percent was filled with “um, ah, this, that” and other filler words. A few scattered claps sounded from below. Sarah Thompson stood there swaying, his eyelids waging a final battle against sleep. Seeing Sarah Thompson like this, George Miller pinched his leg, startling Sarah Thompson awake and making him much more alert.

The Dean of Students took the megaphone, “Hello~ Hello, hello~~”

Oh man, William Carter felt his head was really about to explode. He couldn’t understand how these people managed to get to their current positions. The Dean tested the mic for half a minute before starting his speech, “Good morning, students! I am the Dean of Students here, my surname is Ma. If you have any questions in the future, feel free to come to me. The principal has already explained the school’s history very clearly, but I’d like to add a few more words…!” There were intermittent ‘thud’ sounds from below.

Sarah Thompson tugged on William Carter’s sleeve and whispered, “Dong-ge, why do I feel like I want to kill someone right now?”

“……” William Carter was speechless, because he was also trying hard to suppress the same thought.

“(Five thousand words omitted)… So, everyone should feel honored to be here. Alright, now we’ll begin class assignments!” The Dean finally said the words everyone wanted to hear most, and the audience erupted in ‘enthusiastic’ applause. Before handing the megaphone back to the principal, the Dean didn’t forget to shout twice, “Thank you, thank you everyone!”

After the class assignments, William Carter, Sarah Thompson, and a few other brothers were placed in Class 6 of the first year. George Miller was assigned to Class 3 and looked quite unhappy. There were more students this year, so there were a total of eight classes, each with over sixty students. The little brothers William Carter brought were scattered among the different classes. Each homeroom teacher led their students back to the classroom and had them sit in order of height. William Carter’s homeroom teacher was a man in his forties, not very tall, and wore glasses. But William Carter felt there was something a bit sinister about him.

William Carter was seated in the middle, and his deskmate was an outgoing girl. As soon as William Carter sat down, the girl reached out her hand and said, “Hi, my name is Emily Smith.”

William Carter was momentarily stunned, but quickly shook her small hand and said, “My name is William Carter, nice to meet you!” At this moment, William Carter got a good look at Emily Smith’s face—she was very cute, with big eyes and long eyelashes that looked like little fans when she blinked.

“William Carter? I feel like I’ve heard that name somewhere before!” Emily Thompson blinked, trying to remember, and looked at William Carter with curiosity, asking, “Do you know anyone at No. 11 High School?” William Carter shook his head and smiled without saying a word.

Sarah Thompson was sitting right in front of William Carter, frequently turning around to look at him, his eyes filled with envy and jealousy. Seeing this, William Carter patted Sarah Thompson on the head and asked, “Xiao Shuang, why do you keep looking at me?”

Sarah Thompson pulled a long face, glanced at the girl sitting next to him, grabbed William Carter’s hand, and said ‘excitedly’, “Dong-ge, I’m suffering here!” Sarah Thompson’s strange expression made Emily Thompson giggle.

William Carter looked at Sarah Thompson’s deskmate, and just then, the girl turned around after hearing the laughter from behind. Seeing Sarah Thompson’s deskmate’s face, William Carter finally understood his brother’s pain. He nodded, put on a serious face but with a smile in his eyes, and said, “I always thought you were very ‘patriotic’, but I didn’t expect you’d meet someone even more ‘patriotic’ than you! You’re sure to have a happy life ahead.” Sarah Thompson was stunned, not expecting Dong-ge to joke around, and muttered something to himself… In fact, ever since William Carter started hanging out with Sarah Thompson, George Miller, and Sanyan, his personality had become much more cheerful, though he hadn’t noticed it himself.

Emily Thompson tugged on William Carter’s sleeve and curiously asked, “What does ‘patriotic’ mean?”

William Carter chuckled and lowered his voice so the girl in front wouldn’t hear, “For example, during the War of Resistance against Japan, if someone’s looks could scare the Japanese soldiers to death, wouldn’t you say he’s very patriotic?”

“Thud”—Emily Thompson fainted… “You’re so bad! How can you say that about a girl!” “Haha! Just a little joke!” “Hehe~ you guys are so funny!” Hearing the laughter from behind, Sarah Thompson felt as if his heart was being cut by a knife, looked up to the sky and sighed, ‘Alas, I’m such a handsome guy, but…’ He turned to look at the girl next to him. ‘It’s just my bad luck to be born at the wrong time!’

At this moment, the teacher walked up to the podium and knocked on the desk at the front, “Everyone quiet! Quiet!” The classroom fell silent. The teacher was very satisfied with this effect, nodded, and continued, “Now, let me introduce myself!” Then he picked up a piece of chalk and, with a flourish, wrote three characters on the wooden blackboard, then pointed at them with the chalk and said, “This is my name!”

A student stood up, unable to read the writing, and asked, “Teacher, I don’t recognize those characters. Could you read them for us?”

The teacher’s face changed, and he threw the chalk at the student’s head, “Are you a blockhead? Did you just graduate from middle school? You can’t even read this! How can this year’s students be so lacking in quality?!” Seeing the student’s face turn bright red, he paused and said, “Let me tell you! These three characters are—Leonard Green! Now sit down.”
