Ashley Young turned around and looked at Henry Lawson's handsome face. Suddenly, she reached out her fair, delicate hand to him and said coldly, "Hand it over."
"What?" Henry Lawson was a bit baffled by Ashley Young's sudden action.
"My student ID. How much longer are you planning to hide it?"
"Uh... you already know?" Henry Lawson looked a bit embarrassed and gave an awkward laugh.
"Tch, there are only a few things in my handbag. If it had been a thief, there’s no reason they’d leave the wallet with cash and the phone, and instead take a student ID that’s worthless. And most importantly, that night you were the one who helped me put everything back in my bag!"
Looking at Ashley Young now, as if she were possessed by Sherlock Holmes, Henry Lawson, who was skilled in jungle warfare, booby trap design, and sniping, could only scratch his short hair and give a silly laugh like a clueless boy. Seeing that he couldn’t hide it any longer, he fished out the student ID he’d been secretly keeping from a pocket in his tactical pants and handed it back to her.
Holding the student ID that still carried Henry Lawson's body warmth, and thinking about how he’d kept it close to him all this time, Ashley Young's cheeks flushed slightly. She muttered to herself: This wild dragon isn’t really the training maniac the rumors say he is.
She stuffed the student ID back into the pocket of her jeans, then handed the exquisitely packaged white box she’d been holding to Henry Lawson, saying, "Your phone got broken last time. I bought this one on the spur of the moment this afternoon—just make do with it."
The half-bitten fruit on the box already revealed the phone’s pedigree. Compared to his old knockoff with a shattered screen, this was a huge upgrade, not to mention Henry Lawson was never picky about phones to begin with.
"Not bad, I like it," Henry Lawson said with a grin.
"If there’s nothing else, I’ll head back now." Even when facing Henry Lawson, Ashley Young maintained her usual icy demeanor.
She turned and had just stepped out of the pavilion when she suddenly thought of something, stopped, and said with her back to Henry Lawson, "The freshman military training is in a few days. I’ll be participating too."
"Hey, Ashley Young, you’re so pretty—why don’t you smile more? Why keep that cold face all the time?" Henry Lawson called after her.
"Smile? There’s no need for that."
Although Ashley Young sounded absolute, with her back to Henry Lawson, out of his sight, the corners of her mouth couldn’t help but curl up into a beautiful arc.
One day, I’ll make you smile for me willingly. Watching Ashley Young’s receding figure, Henry Lawson said to himself. As for the military training? He curled his lip in disdain. That’s just a game for kids. But what did Ashley Young mean by saying she’d participate? Isn’t she already a sophomore? Why would she join the freshman military training?
Chapter 11: Hacking Expert
When Henry Lawson returned to the dorm, Andrew Stone was playing "LoL" on his laptop, eyes glued to the screen, cursing under his breath.
"Damn it, this is so unlucky, got matched with a bunch of elementary school kids again!" Watching his base crystal get smashed to rubble by the opposing team, Andrew Stone couldn’t help but curse, grabbing the Evian water bottle by his feet and taking a big swig.
Andrew Stone had been so absorbed in the game that he hadn’t noticed Henry Lawson enter the room. It wasn’t until the match ended that he saw Henry Lawson sitting on the bed, fiddling with the Apple phone in his hand.
"Yo, Haozi, when did you get back?"
"When you were just cursing out your teammates’ entire families," Henry Lawson replied without looking up.
As a product of the high-tech era, in both function and appearance, this Apple phone was worlds apart from the "big brick" he’d bought for three hundred yuan before. He inserted his old SIM card, did a quick setup, and the phone was ready to use.
"Whoa, is that an iPhone? Where’d you get it?" Andrew Stone stared at the sleek white phone in Henry Lawson's hand, eyes gleaming with gossip. "Did the goddess give it to you?"
Henry Lawson nodded.
"Man, life is so unfair! I’ll never believe in love again!" Andrew Stone howled in mock agony, clutching his head.
"She insisted on giving it to me, and I was too embarrassed to refuse, so I just took it," Henry Lawson said with a shrug. In his mind, the phone was nowhere near as valuable as that student ID—at least the ID had a photo on it.
A photo? Henry Lawson glanced at Andrew Stone's laptop on the desk and said, "Let me borrow your computer for a bit."
Having lost all faith in love, Andrew Stone was sprawled on the bed playing dead. "Go ahead."
A photo—I can always get it back from your computer. Henry Lawson pulled a memory stick from his "Machete" bag and plugged it into the laptop. It was loaded with hacker software personally written by Noah Wood, also known as the former master-level hacker "Ghost," which Henry Lawson had secretly copied back when he was in the Dragon Shadow unit. He hadn’t expected to actually use it today. If "Ghost" ever found out that his software was being used by Henry Lawson to hack for a girl’s photo, he’d probably cough up blood in frustration.
