Chapter 5

Countless times he had fantasized about being like the protagonist in a book, able to command the wind and summon the rain at will. Today, it seemed he really had the chance—how could he possibly give it up? All those strange ways of activating mysterious items from novels flashed through his mind, the most common being the classic “drip blood to recognize ownership.” But not only did he hesitate at the thought of actually pricking his own hand to draw blood, he had already seen that mysterious space just now, so there didn’t seem to be any need for such a clichéd method.

Another method seemed to be using mental power directly, but so-called mental power was a completely vague and intangible thing, and Brian Carter had no idea how to use it. Still, at the very least, he could imitate the scenes from books: he stared at the ring with eyes wide like two light bulbs, trying to clear his mind of all distractions. But the more he tried to have no stray thoughts, the more chaotic his mind became. Now he was certain that this ring was definitely not an ordinary object—perhaps it was just like those magical items in novels. Scenes of protagonists making fortunes and being surrounded by beautiful women all flooded his mind at once.

With all these thoughts, no matter how wide he opened his eyes, he simply couldn’t focus his mind on the ring. His eyes even started to ache from staring, so he had to close them and rest for a while.

But as soon as he relaxed, just lightly stroking the ring with his finger and not even opening his eyes, he saw that strange space again.

At this moment, Brian Carter was indescribably excited, eagerly and anxiously examining the space.

The space wasn’t exactly big or small—by rough estimate, it was a cube about ten meters on each side. It was very bright inside, but there was no visible source of light. The walls, ceiling, and floor were all smooth as mirrors, making it impossible to tell what material they were made of. Aside from a black seventeen-inch LCD monitor in the corner, there was nothing else in the space. In a hundred square meters, a thousand cubic meters, it felt extremely empty.

“There’s actually such a huge space—just think how much stuff you could store in here!” Knowing this was a storage ring, Brian Carter’s first thought was naturally about its capacity. Ten meters was taller than a three-story building. Just imagine a hundred square meters over three floors, and you could tell how much could fit inside.

His gaze swept to the monitor in the corner—it was the very one he’d just used at the internet café, and somehow, without him even noticing, it had ended up in the ring’s space. Since he could get it in, surely he could get it out, right?

As soon as this thought arose, the monitor in the space suddenly vanished, startling Brian Carter and snapping his attention back to reality.

The monitor was now sitting to his right, with two black cables dangling off the side of the bed.

Brian Carter punched the air in excitement. This monitor was proof that everything was real—he had obtained a storage ring, one that could freely store and retrieve items.

“This really is a house of gold from the books! Everyone says the web novels I read are trash and will ruin my studies and my future, but now it’s been proven—reading web novels is full of promise, especially reading official ones, ha…” At this moment, Brian Carter was so pleased with himself that he couldn’t help but laugh… and laugh some more…

With something like this, Brian Carter naturally couldn’t wait to try out how to use it. And using the storage ring really wasn’t difficult at all. In fact, after just two tries, he already felt a faint connection with the ring. His gaze swept over the items in his room—clothes, books, the nightstand—and as soon as he looked at them, they all disappeared from sight, instantly stored in the space.

With another thought, those items would reappear before his eyes, as if they’d never been moved at all.

This made Brian Carter play to his heart’s content, like a child with a new toy. Everything in the room that could be moved was put into the ring at least once. Weight was simply not a concept for the storage ring—whether it was something as small as a book or as big as the bed, the effect was the same: with a single thought, everything was stored away.

But when he put the bed away, it left Brian Carter rather frustrated, because he was still lying on it. The bed vanished beneath him, and he fell straight to the floor with a dull thud, loud enough to bring his mother over. Luckily, Brian Carter reacted quickly and brought the bed back out right away, or else his mother would have been in for quite a shock when she walked in.

This was a hard lesson for Brian Carter in testing the ring’s functions. Although he grimaced in pain from the fall, compared to learning more about the storage ring’s abilities, it was a trivial price to pay.

With this storage function, life would be so much easier from now on. No matter how heavy something was, just put it in the ring—how awesome was that?

After experimenting a bit more, Brian Carter discovered another new feature: when taking things out of the ring, he could completely control where they appeared, and even place them with perfect precision.
