Chapter 17

Everyone living in this house has to follow the rules set by Big Landlord Bennett, and the first rule is that you can't randomly download things that are too large. First, a few people in this house share one internet cable—if someone keeps downloading, then no one else can play, and the internet speed slows down to a crawl. Second, most people are usually downloading movies, and since Someone Bennett wants to promote his own products, of course he won't allow this damn internet to steal his business.

Seemingly reminded of something, Charles Bennett asked, “Aren’t you two busy grinding away at ‘Magic World’ these days? How do you still have time to watch movies? I remember you both are high-level—when are you going to toss me some awesome gear? My little mage is still decked out in trash.”

“Ugh, don’t even mention it.” Little Nancy sighed, a hint of anger between her brows. “Big Brother Bennett, do you think all men like to have their cake and eat it too? Back when we played Jin Wu Tuan, my husband secretly flirted with girls, and I gave him a serious warning. Just a few days ago, I caught him cozying up to a woman in Magic World behind my back, and he even secretly gave her the blue sword I got. He actually lied to me, saying he sold the weapon... Anyway, this time I’ve given him a major demerit, and if it happens again, I’ll just kick him out!”

“Why don’t you have a fling too, then you two will be even.” Big Landlord Bennett leaned in, sounding casual but actually quite calculating.

Emily Lee blushed, shrank her neck, and teased with a laugh, “Big Brother Bennett, you always say you’re charming but not sleazy, always loved by your tenants, and that you’ve never had anything ambiguous with a female tenant... But, why do I feel like you never have good intentions?”

After speaking, she shifted her posture, and the playful atmosphere vanished.

Landlord Bennett rolled up his sleeves and glared, “Oh, Little Nancy, you get this nervous over a joke? Don’t tell me you actually doubt my character. Don’t you know I’m the very definition of legendary character?”

“I’m not doubting your character, just your looks, hehe.” Emily Lee covered her mouth and giggled.

“What? Am I that ugly?” Landlord Bennett put on a face of deep sorrow, as if his self-esteem had been wounded.

“Not ugly, just a bit old.” Emily Lee was feeling quite delighted with herself.

Landlord Bennett snorted dismissively and said, almost earnestly, “Listen, Little Sister, you’re still too young to appreciate the charm of a mature man. Besides, is twenty-five really that old? Haven’t you heard Alan Tam’s famous saying about being forever twenty-five? Sigh, your taste really hurts me.”

Suddenly, Emily Lee looked at Charles Bennett very seriously, her expression solemn: “Why is it that when I stay up all night gaming, and sometimes see you sneaking around the living room in the middle of the night, you look more like thirty-five? Not to be mean, Big Brother Bennett, but for others that’s called mature, for you... it just seems a bit prematurely aged…”

Charles Bennett felt like slitting his own throat, completely defeated by this Little Nancy. He stood up and said, “You win. This time you’ve really hurt my fragile soul. I’ve got things to do, I’ll settle the score with you next time!”

With that, amid Emily Lee’s crisp laughter, Landlord Bennett walked out the door.

To avoid Ethan Brooks and Lily, those two female troublemakers, from coming to the shop to bother him, Charles Bennett simply decided not to open for business today. He waved down a taxi by the roadside and left with the car.

Chapter 012: The Deskmate

The taxi stopped in the north of the city at a place called Hehuatang. Chief Bennett, wearing a baseball cap and sunglasses, stepped out of the car looking like a secret agent, then walked with a graceful stride through the crowd.

Near Hehuatang, there’s a train station with a long history. With the winds of reform and opening up, all sorts of businesses have sprung up here. These businesses are quite unique: for example, a public phone supermarket where out-of-towners are charged twenty yuan for a one-minute long-distance call; or the illegal taxis where refusing a ride can lead to a bloody fight; or the antique-level prostitutes where you can have a go for twenty yuan... In short, all sorts of things, you name it, it’s here.

After a few steps, Charles Bennett suddenly felt very hungry. This kind of hunger is like sexual desire—usually you don’t notice it, but once it hits, it’s unstoppable. Big Bennett looked pained, and couldn’t help wanting to slap himself a few times.

Eating at Hehuatang really takes courage. First, you have to weigh your wallet, and second, you have to ignore the hygiene of the food.

Looking around, the hungry and thirsty Chief Bennett searched for a place that was both cheap and clean. With Buddha’s blessing and Jesus’ grace, Chief Bennett suddenly spotted a newly opened Dicos not far away.

At this moment, Big Bennett was feeling extremely melodramatic, wanting to thank heaven and earth, and thank fate for leading him to Dicos.

As soon as he entered, Big Bennett felt the urge to complain about the two indifferent servers. They say in the fast food world, KFC is best for taste, Dicos is second, McDonald’s is third, but for service quality, Dicos is always the worst, and it seems that’s true. Luckily, Big Bennett was focused on his next task and wasn’t in the mood to fuss. He casually ordered crispy fried chicken, fries, and a cola, and sat down by the window.

“Wei~~~ Charles Bennett?” Suddenly, a charming female voice with a hint of uncertainty came from behind him.
