Chapter 1

Volume One, Chapter One: Dragon Sealing

What kind of group are sealers?

In a world where warriors and mages are the main fighting force, this profession seems a bit awkward. Sealers might train their bodies, but they’re nowhere near warriors. Sealers need strong mental power, but compared to mages, they’re not even in the same league.

Yet, this profession wedged in the cracks still has its value. These people, whose mental power isn’t that strong and whose bodies aren’t that strong either, can use sealing techniques to seal magical beasts to help in battle. At the very least, this profession has caused the beastkin tribe to suffer heavy losses. In every war, there are always hordes of fearless magical beasts used as cannon fodder, giving humans a huge advantage, and the status of sealers has gradually risen.

The more magical beasts a sealer seals, and the higher their level, the stronger the sealer becomes. But this profession has a fatal weakness: the sealers themselves are too weak, far more fragile than warriors or mages, so they still can’t take center stage. Although the continent’s acknowledged number one powerhouse is a sealer, it must be admitted that’s an exception—because the King of Sealing is also a Sword Saint, a once-in-five-centuries peerless genius admired by humans, beastkin, angels, and giants alike. But one person can’t change an entire profession.

Sealers have one thing that other professions can’t even come close to, and because of this, countless people still hope to become sealers. Whether in wartime or peacetime, this is the most lucrative profession. Neither warriors nor mages can compare. Not to mention that in every battle, you just need to send magical beasts to attack; just selling sealing cards alone can make a fortune. Adventurers, no matter their profession, always carry a few cards for emergencies—even the lowest-level Gale Beast or Night Hawk can save your life at the right moment.

Gavin Clark is a soldier, part of the cannon fodder battalion. All his companions have disappeared, but he survived through sheer willpower. In fact, it’s simple: he wanted to live. He had to live. To survive, he would do anything—even play dead—because only then could he stay alive. He had a reason to live.

After the war, Gavin Clark didn’t stay unemployed for long. Maybe his reputation for luck helped; third-rank sealer Logan Bennett chose him, and from then on, Gavin Clark became a sealer’s attendant.

To Gavin Clark, Sealer Logan Bennett was lofty and untouchable. He liked being called “Master,” and Gavin Clark was happy to oblige, because he hoped to learn sealing techniques. That way, he could get rich. With money, he could post a quest at the Adventurers’ Guild to find his sister. For such a needle-in-a-haystack task, only a big enough reward would get anyone’s attention.

Gavin Clark is an orphan. When he was taken in, he had a little sister like a tiny radish. But when war broke out, they were separated. His father, being beastkin, was killed. Gavin Clark survived by luck, because he was human, but was sent to the front lines as cannon fodder. The officers never expected this unremarkable kid to survive.

Gavin Clark never thanked anyone. The father who adopted him was the only one. On his deathbed, his father left just one wish: to find his sister.

Only then did Gavin Clark realize how irreconcilable humans and beastkin were. But back then, he didn’t understand much. By the time he did, years had passed.

After the war, Master Logan Bennett didn’t stay in the Watt Empire, but settled in the small principality of Kalilio, a buffer zone among the three great empires. In this tiny country of just over three thousand kilometers, his card-making skills made him highly valued, and he even became a guest of the king.

Of course, Gavin Clark later learned that Logan Bennett wasn’t really a “master.” Among sealers, his skills were only first-rate, not top-tier. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have been stuck at third-rank for over twenty years, unable to advance even after the trials of war.

But in a small country like Kalilio, a great sealer is at least as wealthy as a tycoon. The rich are respected everywhere, and Gavin Clark benefited from this as well. Still, things didn’t improve much. Sealers are always cautious, because their bodies are weak, but they can control powerful magical beasts, so they’re very sensitive to their surroundings. The only reason Logan Bennett chose Gavin Clark was because he needed a helper—a harmless one. Compared to those strong mages and warriors, he still chose Gavin Clark.
