Chapter 15

Of course, the reason why humans were able to secure a place for themselves was clearly not by their own efforts alone. Among the beast clans, there was a race that was arrogant and considered themselves superior—the Angel Clan. Their former name was the Bird Clan, often called birdmen, but they believed themselves to be the darlings of the true gods, a combination of power and beauty, born rulers.

Obviously, the Dragon Clan scoffed at this notion. They possessed the greatest strength and the most handsome appearance among the beast clans—only lacking a pair of feathered wings.

Compared to the narcissism of the Angel Clan, the Dragon Clan was more reserved. They stood aloof, but were unwilling to interfere with others.

Likewise, the other beast clans didn’t buy into the birdmen’s claims either. The birdmen did have some skills, but the title of king among the beast clans was not theirs. In terms of strength, they were inferior to the Dragon Clan; in numbers, they couldn’t match the other beast clans; in contributions, they fell short of the Giant Clan. Of course, if there were a contest for image ambassador, they’d be a good choice—unfortunately, such a title didn’t exist.

The Angel Clan was unwilling to accept this, so they set their sights on humans, the largest group among the beast clans... In terms of numbers, yet living at the very bottom of the beast clan hierarchy. Although the Trussier Continent was rich in resources and needed people to work and serve the upper classes, humans were undoubtedly the best slaves.

Humans were very clever, but unfortunately lacked strength. The Angel Clan was clever and powerful, but lacked numbers. The two intelligent races hit it off immediately, and then war broke out.

In the early stages of the war, the humans, led by the Angel Clan elites, suffered defeat after defeat. Even though they had learned the Angel Clan’s skills and greatly improved their combat abilities, when facing the then-dominant Dark Clan, Giant Clan, and Beast Clan, they still lost ground continuously.

Two events turned the tide of the war.

On one hand, humans finally found the power that suited them best—sealing. Human magic and battle aura were mediocre, unable to compete with the other beast clans. Even with the Angel Clan’s help, it was useless. But when they discovered how to seal magical beasts and command them in battle, the situation improved greatly. With the assistance of large numbers of magical beasts, defeating humans came at a heavy price for the beast clans.

The most crucial—and also the most baffling—event was this: the beast clans were invincible at the time because the Dark Clan had produced a king, wise and powerful. To counter the humans’ sealing arts, this Dark King gathered the other royal clans together. But then, a sudden change occurred. Overnight, all the kings were brutally killed, and a thousand miles around was leveled to the ground.

No one knew what had happened. After this battle, the beast clans were severely weakened, and a tug-of-war lasting hundreds of years ensued, with humans and beast clans each holding half the continent.

As the war went on, humans’ sealing arts became more and more formidable. Besides sealing beasts, they could even seal other races. Once sealed, these races became slaves to humans—a kind of irony, really. Thirty years east of the river, thirty years west. Even when the beast clans revived later, humans no longer feared them.

After hundreds of years of adaptation, humans formed a prosperous society and a complete system. They got along harmoniously with the Angel Clan. Humans were naturally drawn to beauty, which greatly satisfied the Angel Clan, while the Angel Clan needed the admiration of humans. At the same time, the Angel Clan provided a considerable number of experts, which was very important in resisting other races. The two sides complemented each other, making for a beautiful partnership.

As for the other races, the Dragon Clan, having not participated in the war, became isolated. This suited their temperament—they never liked to bother with others, and with their own great strength, no one wanted to provoke them.

The Dark Clan declined, with many rumors about the cause. Some said it was a joint assassination by other races; others blamed the mad Dark King. But the Dark Clan’s time on the stage of history was over.

The current other races are actually made up of two main groups: the Giant Clan and a smaller concept of the beast clans. The Giant Clan is few in number but has a tremendous impact on the battlefield. Their relationship with the beast clans is somewhat like that between humans and the Angel Clan—mutually dependent and developing together.

Humans and the other races fought small wars every year, and a major war every three years. This on-and-off conflict continued for a long time, until recent years, when perhaps both sides had fought enough, or realized they couldn’t defeat each other in the short term. Rather than waste resources, it was better to rest and wait for the right opportunity. Thus, the continent entered a rare period of prosperity.

Another half year passed. A plainly dressed young man, leading a strange horse, walked out of Sunset Canyon. This place, known as one of the five forbidden zones, felt like home to the young man—it was the first time he’d ever felt a sense of home.

“Xiao Hei, I’m going to take you to see the world I used to live in. It’s much more fun than Sunset Canyon, with lots of delicious food.”

“Hiss...”

“Hehe, no need to get so excited—there’s plenty of fun things!” Gavin Clark was just following his instincts; as long as the monsters kept getting weaker, he knew he was on the right track.

“Hiss... hiss...”

The dark unicorn neighed. Gavin Clark scratched his head helplessly. “You greedy horse, how long have we been walking and you’re already hungry!”

Little Clark wagged his tail furiously. This fellow’s taste had become spoiled—he used to eat magical beasts raw, but now, after getting used to delicacies, he couldn’t go back.
