Chapter 7

These dwarves also realized the problem. A trace of a human-like, ferocious grin appeared on their ugly faces. With a push of their limbs against the ground, they lunged at Brian Carter like two hideous toads.

The people behind were startled, and one of them shouted, “Run!”

But Brian Carter suddenly shrugged his shoulder, tossing Grace Miller, who had been slung over it, outwards. The green dwarf lunging from the left had no time to dodge and was slammed to the ground by the flying Grace Miller.

Although they were agile, their bodies were ultimately too small. Being struck by a person weighing over a hundred jin nearly knocked them unconscious.

Having thrown off the burden from his shoulder, Brian Carter felt lighter. He smoothly drew the Sifeng Sword from his waist, took a step forward, and thrust it straight into the chest of another dwarf, the blade shining like autumn water.

With a flick of the sword, green blood spun off the blade in a beautiful arc. Turning around, Brian Carter delivered a diagonal slash, severing the head of the dwarf pinned down by Grace Miller.

A thrust, a spin, a slash—smooth and fluid as flowing water. The two dwarves fell to the sword.

Brian Carter twirled his sword, flicking all the blood off the blade before sheathing it.

Grace Miller, having been suddenly thrown by Brian Carter, was jolted awake by the shock. But as soon as she opened her eyes, she saw Brian Carter's sword coming down toward her, and, unable to catch her breath, fainted again from fright.

Brian Carter felt a bit helpless—so this sharp-tongued woman was actually so timid. Just as he was about to hoist Grace Miller up again, he heard footsteps behind him.

The group that had rushed past earlier had actually returned, with seven or eight people. The bespectacled man in the lead thanked him, “Thank you for saving us…”

Brian Carter waved his hand and said, “Time is short, no need for thanks. I’m heading to Shelter No. 3—are you coming?”

The bespectacled man glanced at the others, and seeing no objections, said, “We’ll go too, let’s go together.” He waved, “Everyone, lend a hand and help the young man carry her.” They were all smart people—having seen Brian Carter dispatch a group of dwarves with ease, their confidence soared. No matter what, following Brian Carter at least gave them a chance to survive.

There’s strength in numbers. Several people, with much effort, carried Grace Miller and jogged toward the Anfu Commercial Building in Zone D.

Brian Carter had always thought the base was cramped and small, but now he felt it was a bit too big. Fortunately, after turning a corner, they found several public bicycles. He let the weak women and the overweight ride, and their speed increased significantly.

“These dwarves aren’t very brave or strong. They’re also afraid of strong light and loud noises. As long as you don’t panic, dealing with one is no problem…” Taking advantage of a free moment, Brian Carter explained the tricks to handling green dwarves to those nearby.

Among a group of adults, a youthful-faced teenager was the center of attention, which looked a bit odd. But everyone present found it perfectly natural.

Along the way, Brian Carter killed more than a dozen green dwarves and gathered a large group of people. Altogether, there were over a hundred, most of them couples with their children. Although there were many people, they clearly lacked combat ability.

Fortunately, with martial arts being popular and Brian Carter leading the way, everyone’s courage was bolstered. Many had swords or knives, and by pooling their weapons, a dozen men formed the outer ring, leading the group in a mighty surge toward Shelter No. 3.

The more people there were, the slower the pace. But at a time like this, Brian Carter couldn’t just abandon them. He could only try to move as quickly as possible.

“Ahhh…”

With his keen senses, Brian Carter heard someone shouting ahead. The voice was strong and full of energy—clearly a skilled fighter in battle.

He quickly set down the delicate one and rushed forward. Rounding a corner, he saw a fountain surrounded by lawn, where a giant lizardman over two meters tall was facing off against a strong man. Behind the man, a mother and daughter clung to each other.

Although the man was strong, his black military uniform was torn to shreds, covered in long, bloody scratches. His expression remained steady, but there was a hint of despair in his darting eyes.

If he were alone, he might still escape, but trying to protect his wife and daughter made it impossible. If this dragged on, the whole family would die here.

Seeing the giant lizardman, the group following Brian Carter all turned pale. Earlier, they had killed quite a few dwarves with Brian Carter and were riding high on morale. But the sight of the giant lizardman instantly shattered their newfound courage.

The lizardman’s body was massive, its pale green, scaly skin like thick armor. Its sturdy limbs were thicker than a grown man’s waist. Though humanoid in shape, it had a lizard’s head.

On its scaly head, yellow triangular eyes showed no emotion. Its long, black claws were chillingly sharp.

Brian Carter also knew that the lizardman’s claws were highly poisonous—a normal person scratched by them wouldn’t survive ten minutes. Compared to the ferocious lizardman, the green dwarves were like harmless pets.

Seeing this lizardman, Brian Carter hesitated. If he were alone, he could try his luck against the beast. But he was leading a group. If the lizardman charged, it would be a massacre.
