He could vaguely sense the power emanating from deep within Brian Carter. It was a spirit of striving forward, a vigorous and uplifting aura. Influenced by Brian Carter's emotions, Jason Clark couldn't help but feel filled with fighting spirit as well.
The Anfu Building was getting closer and closer. Under the night sky, the glass pyramid of the Anfu Building remained the most striking structure in the base.
As they drew nearer to the Anfu Building, the unease in Jason Clark's heart grew stronger. Brian Carter and Jason Clark did not speak; talking at this moment would not only be distracting but could also expose their whereabouts.
When they reached the corner, Jason Clark stopped Brian Carter and took the lead to peek around. He saw that on the large expanse of lawn in front of the Anfu Building, dozens of corpses were scattered in disarray.
The dead had died miserably, with flesh and blood splattered everywhere. The thick stench of blood was so strong it made it hard to breathe.
The central plaza, once a place for leisure and entertainment, had become a bloody hell.
Although Jason Clark was a veteran, seeing this scene made him feel especially oppressed, sad, and angry. The people lying there had been living, breathing lives not long ago.
Brian Carter also peeked out for a look. He was mentally prepared and had seen such scenes many times before. With his memories constantly merging, such sights could no longer shake him.
“It was the lizardmen, and the shadow wolves.” Even though they were more than two hundred meters away, Brian Carter noticed the huge bite marks and severed limbs on the bodies, making it easy to judge.
Jason Clark was even more surprised. Mastery of swordsmanship and secret arts could be taught by someone. Bravery in battle could be innate. But battlefield observation required real experience. Where on earth had this young man learned all this?
Brian Carter knew this would arouse suspicion, but the situation was urgent and there was no time to worry about it. “Shadow wolves” might be beast-shaped, but they were among the most cunning and ferocious creatures of the underground races.
“What do you want to do?” Although Jason Clark had his own ideas, he still wanted to hear Brian Carter's opinion.
Brian Carter glanced at Jason Clark. “Time is tight now, we can only fight our way through.”
Jason Clark was a bit doubtful. Charging in without knowing the enemy's situation—wasn't that suicide? There were three shelters in the base; if this one didn't work, they could go to another. If all else failed, they could find a relatively enclosed place to hide.
Brian Carter looked seriously into Jason Clark's eyes and said, “Brother Zhou, your power armor can't last much longer. We don't have time to hesitate; we can only break through in one go. If we drag this out, things will only get worse...”
Feeling Brian Carter's determination, Jason Clark thought for a moment and solemnly said, “I trust you.” It was easy to say, but if Brian Carter was wrong, Jason Clark would be risking his own life. If Brian Carter hadn't saved him, if Brian Carter hadn't shown such extraordinary ability, Jason Clark would never so rashly trust a teenager.
Brian Carter felt relieved. If he couldn't convince Jason Clark, things would get complicated. Jason Clark was also a decisive person; once he made up his mind, he didn't hesitate at all. He followed Brian Carter quickly onto the lawn in front of the Anfu Building.
Two tall lizardmen emerged from either side of the building. Behind Brian Carter and Jason Clark, five giant wolves silently appeared.
These giant wolves emitted a faint blue glow all over, each as big as a calf, their green eyes shining with a cold and cruel light. Yet their steps made no sound, and they appeared suddenly, like ghosts in the night.
Brian Carter knew these shadow wolves had a special ability: they could use light to become invisible. Of course, their invisibility only worked if they stayed still. The faint blue glow they emitted also helped to confuse the eyes. Shadow wolves were the most insidious and terrifying assassins of the underground world.
Jason Clark turned and saw five shadow wolves, and his heart turned cold. He knew how dangerous shadow wolves were; even with his power gauntlets, he was no match for so many of them.
“You hold off the lizardmen, I'll deal with the shadow wolves,” Brian Carter ordered calmly.
Although Jason Clark felt there was no way out, hearing Brian Carter's decisive and resolute command, he instinctively obeyed, “Yes.”
After agreeing, Jason Clark felt something was off. But Brian Carter had already charged at the five shadow wolves. The two lizardmen in front also flanked them from both sides. Jason Clark had no choice but to roar and charge at the lizardmen. Deep down, he still held a sliver of hope that Brian Carter could really work a miracle.
Brian Carter, however, was not as pessimistic as Jason Clark. Five shadow wolves were still within his expectations. Although shadow wolves were terrifying, their actual combat power was less than that of the lizardmen. They certainly didn't have the lizardmen's armor-like tough scales.
Shadow wolves were extremely cunning creatures. Seeing Brian Carter charging in alone without hesitation, the two leading shadow wolves actually slowed down, while the other three sped up, flanking from both sides to form an encirclement.
Brian Carter ignored the wolves on either side and charged straight at the one in front. That shadow wolf didn't dodge either, leaping fiercely at Brian Carter. As it jumped, the faint blue glow on its body left a clear trajectory in Brian Carter's eyes.
Two sword lights flashed and crossed, as if a dazzling cross had appeared out of thin air. However, the sword light landed behind the shadow wolf.
