Jason Clark had fought the shadow wolves underground many times, mostly relying on advanced weaponry to blast them apart. Shadow wolves weren’t as strong as lizardmen, nor as agile as green goblins, but they were well-balanced in strength, possessed swift speed, razor-sharp claws and fangs, an innate ability to confuse one’s vision, and intelligence on par with humans.
It could be said that a team of five shadow wolves, accustomed to working together, was far more terrifying than two lizardmen.
Jason Clark knew that even if he went all out, he still wouldn’t be a match for five shadow wolves. Let alone kill them all in such a short time.
Because his mind wasn’t fully focused, Jason Clark found himself in grave danger for a moment. Brian Carter could only sigh helplessly and drag his feet over.
“I’m coming…” Brian Carter called out. Jason Clark snapped back to his senses and threw himself into a full effort against the two lizardmen.
Brian Carter shouted, but didn’t move quickly. However, the now-alert Jason Clark fought with exceptional bravery. He spotted an opening and landed another punch on the lizardman with the severed arm. The fangs protruding from his gauntlet suddenly extended over a foot, leaving four deep, bloody holes in the lizardman’s abdomen.
But Jason Clark was also sent flying by a swipe from the agonized lizardman.
Brian Carter could only sigh and sped up his charge. This was clearly a moment to proceed steadily and wait for him to arrive, yet Jason Clark had made such a rookie mistake that Brian Carter didn’t even know what to say.
Jason Clark crashed into the building’s floor-to-ceiling window like a cannonball, shattering the tempered glass into thousands of pieces. Fortunately, Jason Clark had protected himself well, and with the gauntlet boosting his strength, he wasn’t seriously injured. He just felt dizzy, shook his head, and charged out again.
Brian Carter pointed his twin swords at the uninjured lizardman and taunted, “Come and meet your death.”
Lizardmen were far less intelligent than shadow wolves. Provoked by Brian Carter, it actually turned and charged straight at him.
“You really do listen…” Brian Carter didn’t dare fight the lizardman head-on, so he spun around and hid behind the tall pillar by the main entrance.
In front of the Anfu Building stood twenty massive stone columns, each over ten meters tall, lined up in a row—truly imposing. Brian Carter, being slender, hid behind one of the giant columns without even a corner of his clothes showing.
Seeing Brian Carter hide, the lizardman hesitated. Its intelligence wasn’t high, but it vaguely sensed something was off. After a moment’s thought, it turned and lunged at Jason Clark instead.
Brian Carter gritted his teeth, just about to rush out and fight desperately, when he saw more than a dozen people running over from a distance, each firing their guns at the lizardman.
Although laser pistols lacked stopping power and accuracy, with over a dozen guns firing at once, the rain of laser blasts made blood spurt from the lizardman’s body, causing it to shudder all over.
The two leading the group were the bespectacled men, Mark Harris and David Bolton.
“Brother, we’re here to help…” Mark Harris shouted loudly. The group had been hiding in the back, feeling ashamed. But seeing the urgency of the situation, they knew they couldn’t just stand by and watch. After a quick discussion, the dozen or so people with guns gathered together and rushed over to help.
Although their appearance didn’t manage to kill the lizardman, it did lift the spirits of both Jason Clark and Brian Carter.
At a critical moment, having comrades come to your aid was truly wonderful!
Chapter 7: Conspiracy
Although the group hadn’t managed to kill the lizardman and their help to Brian Carter and Jason Clark was limited, their arrival still warmed the hearts of Brian Carter and Jason Clark.
It proved that their hard-fought battles had earned the recognition and support of the group. And the others were willing to face hardship together with Brian Carter and his companions.
At a crucial moment, having people supporting them from behind—even if the help was limited—still greatly boosted the morale of Brian Carter and Jason Clark.
This subtle psychological shift was enough to influence the entire battle.
The lizardman, driven mad by the pain of being shot, abandoned Brian Carter and Jason Clark and charged at the group.
The two sides were only fifty or sixty meters apart. For the lizardman, it would take just two or three seconds to reach the crowd. When that happened, it would surely be a massacre.
None of the group were fighters, and seeing the towering lizardman charging at them, they all panicked.
The leader, Mark Harris, was pale but managed to stay calm and shouted, “Don’t panic, fire together!”
The others were so scared their hands and feet went weak, but with Mark Harris standing at the front, no one else dared to run. Besides, at the lizardman’s speed, they couldn’t escape anyway.
A dozen laser guns fired wildly, but unfortunately, the lizardman was extremely fast. The panicked, trembling shooters only managed to land a few scattered shots, which were nowhere near enough to stop its advance.
“Run!” Jason Clark shouted anxiously, but it was too late.
Brian Carter couldn’t just watch the group get slaughtered. He took a deep breath, crossed his twin swords before his chest, aimed straight at the lizardman’s back, and burst forth once more.
The marble floor beneath his feet exploded with a bang as Brian Carter’s figure blurred and shot forward.
With a masterful twin-sword stance, he sliced through the air, increasing his speed by about 10%.
Under the threat of the lizardman, the panicked group suddenly saw a dazzling flash before their eyes. A blindingly bright sword light was seared into their vision. The sword light was so brilliant, and Brian Carter’s figure so blurred, that no one could see him behind the light.
The straight sword light pointed directly at the lizardman. The lizardman sensed something was wrong, abruptly stopped and turned, and thrust both claws fiercely toward the sword light.
