Chapter 4

"I'm really fine now, I can't see anything anymore. What that doctor said earlier should be correct—this is just an early-stage condition and should be easy to control." Gavin Dawson waved his hand and then got out of bed. At that moment, Lily Harris rushed to the bedside to help Gavin Dawson, her voice low and full of guilt as she said, "I'm sorry, it's all my fault... If you ever have another episode, just tell me. No matter what, I'll take responsibility for this."

"It's okay, I'm really fine." Would someone who lives in the same building as me be rich? That's the outskirts of the city, a rental building with forty or fifty households in one block. It really wasn't her fault to begin with, and the fact that she's still saying this now made Gavin Dawson feel a bit touched, so he kept assuring her that he was fine.

After that, the two fell silent again. Lily Harris just kept her head down, holding onto Gavin Dawson's arm, watching him put on his shoes. When he was dressed, she clung to Gavin Dawson as they walked out.

"You don't need to help me, I can walk." Gavin Dawson felt a bit embarrassed, but even after he spoke, Lily Harris still held onto his arm and wouldn't let go.

Soon, the two of them walked out of the hospital room. This was the fourth floor of the inpatient building at the city's Second Hospital. The clean corridor was lined with rooms, and the near-noon sunlight streamed in from both sides of the hallway, making the area bright.

After a few steps, as Gavin Dawson passed the neighboring ward, he naturally glanced inside. To be honest, up to now, he had only seen Lily Harris, that middle-aged doctor, and a nurse—only those three, and only the floating text above their bodies. As for whether there were others, he was genuinely eager to find out.

This time, as he stared, Gavin Dawson suddenly froze in his tracks while walking with Lily Harris. In the open ward, on a bed near the door, lay a man with his right leg in a cast. Not only was his leg in a cast, but the rest of his body was wrapped up like a mummy.

On the man's chest, there were also two lines of floating text: Spirit, 0; Vitality, -0.6.

"A negative value?" Gavin Dawson was shocked. How could these values change?

"What's wrong? Are you seeing it again?" As Gavin Dawson stared in shock, Lily Harris sensitively looked up, her voice soft with worry and a hint of frustration.

"Huh? No..." Gavin Dawson quickly turned back and waved his hand. "I was just surprised by that person. Judging by his condition, his injuries are so serious. Compared to him, my little problem just now is nothing, not to mention it's already gone."

"Really?" A trace of doubt flashed in Lily Harris's eyes.

"Of course it's true." Gavin Dawson waved his hand again, though he was still full of questions inside. Why was that person's vitality value negative?

But no matter what, he didn't want this matter to trouble the woman in front of him anymore. After all, it wasn't her fault, and he certainly didn't want to blame her.

"Oh." A strange look flickered in Lily Harris's eyes—whether it was relief or guilt, it was hard to say. "Then let's go."

"Okay." Gavin Dawson really wanted to stop and take a few more glances, but could only nod. When they reached the next ward, he saw another man practicing walking with crutches. That person's values: Spirit 0, Vitality -0.5.

"Also negative? Strange..." Although still surprised, Gavin Dawson didn't stop again, just glanced and kept walking.

After that, passing by ward after ward, and while standing in the hospital lobby waiting for Lily Harris to handle the discharge paperwork, Gavin Dawson saw the values of many more patients.

Those in wheelchairs, on crutches, or fully bandaged all had a spirit value of basically 0, but their vitality fluctuated between -0.4 and -0.7. The more serious the injury, the lower the value. As for the hospital lobby, occasionally someone sneezing, with a runny nose, or overhearing someone mention having diabetes or rhinitis, their vitality values ranged from -0.1 to -0.3.

As Gavin Dawson observed all this, he was gradually shocked by his own findings. It seemed that he hadn't been hit into schizophrenia, but had instead gained a special ability. Why did the vitality value in these two stats so closely match each person's health condition?

Chapter 003: Not a Disease

Finally, after walking out of the main lobby of the Second Hospital, Gavin Dawson was still lost in his observations and discoveries, his face a bit dazed. He simply couldn't imagine that such a thing could exist in this world.

Moving almost mechanically, as Gavin Dawson walked down the steps in front of the building, he didn't notice several doctors in white coats suddenly rushing out from behind the building, along with several orderlies carrying a stretcher.

"Make way, please move aside."

One of the doctors in a white coat, running up behind Gavin Dawson, first called out, then, seeing that Gavin Dawson didn't react, impatiently reached out to push him. Luckily, Lily Harris reacted quickly, grabbing Gavin Dawson's arm and pulling him to the side. She anxiously said, "Gavin Dawson? Don't scare me. What's wrong with you? If you're not better, let's go to the Third Hospital right now!"
