Chapter 19

“Phew.” Gavin Dawson withdrew his gaze and fell into deep thought again. Just now, on that dirt path, he had a physical body—inside, his body was already gasping for breath from exhaustion. But after falling out, his real body in reality didn’t feel the slightest bit tired. Could it be that nothing inside actually affects his true self?

He thought about it, but couldn’t figure it out. Gavin Dawson entered the transfer state once more, and then found that his body standing on the dirt path was once again full of energy, with no trace of the previous fatigue.

“How strange, it’s like every time I fall out, I get refreshed, instantly back to my best state?” Although he was puzzled, he didn’t dare pause for even a moment, and immediately sprinted with all his might. Even when he started to feel tired again after two minutes, he gritted his teeth and kept running at full speed. This time, he managed to keep going for a full four minutes before his speed finally slowed down completely. But the weird thing was, even though his speed was now less than half of before, the path behind him didn’t swallow him up. In fact, the speed of the path was not fast but slow, just enough to force him to use all his strength with every step...

“Everything here is just too bizarre.” Gavin Dawson’s doubts grew, but he didn’t dare get distracted. He just kept running with all his strength, putting everything he had into every step, striving to take the biggest stride possible. Otherwise, he’d have to start the transfer all over again. So after just another three or four minutes, Gavin Dawson had only run halfway down the path before he collapsed to the ground with a thud, not even having the strength to get up.

“Huff... huff...”

His breathing was as heavy as a bellows. Gavin Dawson struggled to lift his arm, only to find it felt as heavy as ten thousand pounds, almost impossible to raise. The speed at which the path behind him was disappearing also gradually slowed to its minimum, only devouring an inch per second. But even so, after another minute or two, Gavin Dawson still fell into darkness with a startled cry.

“Cough...” A light cough sounded in Gavin Dawson’s ears from in front of him. When he opened his eyes, he saw James Foster smiling at him, as if apologizing for waking him up?

A bead of cold sweat immediately broke out on Gavin Dawson’s forehead. The way he looked just now must have seemed like he was slacking off to others, right? He’d only been at work for less than half an hour and was already caught slacking by his boss? No matter how thick-skinned he was, he couldn’t help but blush a little. But what made him even more embarrassed was that after catching him slacking, his boss didn’t scold him—instead, he smiled apologetically?

But Gavin Dawson also felt a hint of suspicion, because he suddenly realized that his body seemed to have changed a little. Both his energy and his state were better than before. Even just clenching his fist felt a bit stronger than it used to.

“How strange, why do I feel so energetic? Could it be that being exhausted to the point of collapse in that space actually benefits my real body?”

Just as Gavin Dawson was sweating and pondering the strange changes in his body, an angry shout came from more than ten meters to his right: “Grace Bolton! What’s wrong with you? Didn’t get enough sleep?! Sleeping here first thing in the morning?! That’s outrageous! Look at you! You still have client work unfinished, and you’re...”

“Heh~”

As James Foster scolded, the guy called Grace Bolton suddenly stretched and let out a huge yawn. Then, ignoring James Foster’s dumbfounded expression, he forced out a bit of energy and said, “Sorry, Manager Foster, I’m just too...”

He only got halfway through his sentence before his body went limp and he slumped over his desk, falling asleep again.

“Pfft~”

A few snickers immediately sounded in the office. Wasn’t Grace Bolton a bit too much? Even being scolded by his boss, he could still keep sleeping?

His behavior made James Foster’s face flush red and then pale with anger. He wanted to say something more, but seeing that Grace Bolton seemed to be sleeping soundly and couldn’t possibly hear him, he just raised his hand, pointed at Grace Bolton a few times, then waved his hand and walked out with a dark expression.

“He’s done for. This time Grace Bolton is definitely going to get his pay docked. He’ll probably have to hand over his design work too, so there goes his commission. The loss will be huge.”

“Yeah, he might even have to write a self-criticism.”

A wave of timid whispers immediately spread through the office. But amid the murmurs, a designer not far from Gavin Dawson suddenly glanced at him with a look of disdain and said, “Come on, didn’t someone over here just fall asleep too? I didn’t see James Foster say anything.”

“Huh?” The designer next to him heard this and immediately realized who he meant. He grinned slyly and said, “Heh, that guy’s something else. Even Director Wang treats him with respect. What can James Foster say? Even if he knows he’s a fraud, he still has to put on a smile.”

“Exactly, exactly, that guy’s really something... Damn, if I’d known, I wouldn’t have studied design. Should’ve learned how to scam people instead—so much easier.”

The mocking words, along with looks of either envy or contempt, immediately made Gavin Dawson’s face burn with embarrassment. James Foster’s reaction when he walked past him earlier really was a bit much.

Gavin Dawson first gave a self-deprecating, awkward smile, then looked in Grace Bolton’s direction with deep apology—because that Grace Bolton was the designer from whom he’d taken 0.1 points of spirit energy.
