Chapter 11

Naturally, he didn’t look pleased—after all, Gavin Dawson was someone he had personally invited. If Miles Lewis had someone throw him out, it would be no different from slapping the president of Chuangyuan across the face in front of everyone.

Even though he now realized that inviting Gavin Dawson had been a bit rash and muddle-headed.

Indeed, when he first received that medical report yesterday and learned he had stomach cancer, Matthew Walker felt as if he’d been struck by a bolt from the blue. His mind was in a daze. After all, he was just an ordinary person—suddenly finding out he had cancer, and that it was already close to the late stage, would shake even the calmest and most composed person.

So, recalling Gavin Dawson’s behavior when they first met, he mistakenly thought this young man had some special ability. Just as Gavin Dawson had said on the phone yesterday, desperate people will try anything when sick.

However, after a night of reflection, Matthew Walker finally snapped out of his initial panic. He realized that inviting Gavin Dawson to work at Chuangyuan had been a foolish move. What could a young man in his early twenties possibly do to help with his cancer? If he really could help, that would be the biggest joke in the world. Once he came to his senses, Matthew Walker even found his own call to Gavin Dawson rather ridiculous.

But no matter what, he was a man of status—the president of a major company. His word, once spoken, was like water spilled: it couldn’t be taken back. Since he’d said it, he had to follow through. After all, it was just giving Gavin Dawson a designer job. To him now, it was hardly worth mentioning…

But then there was Miles Lewis, who had the nerve to slap him in the face right in front of everyone? How could Matthew Walker not be angry? Especially now, when he had managed to suppress his fear of cancer for the moment, but was still filled with rage. Why did he have to get cancer? Why was he so unlucky?

Miles Lewis’s actions had practically collided head-on with the volcano inside Matthew Walker that had nowhere else to erupt. So his sharp rebuke was absolutely full of fury, scaring Miles Lewis so much that his legs went weak and he stammered, “President… President Wang… I…”

“What kind of conduct is this?! Is this how you serve as HR manager?! Even if this Mr. Du wasn’t invited by me, do you think you can just call security to throw people out as you please?! Is this how we treat people at Chuangyuan? Looks to me like you don’t want to work here anymore! Get back to your office and reflect on your actions!!” Matthew Walker’s tone was still extremely harsh, glaring angrily at Miles Lewis as he scolded him again.

“Yes… President Wang.” Miles Lewis looked flustered, shot a fearful glance at Matthew Walker, and hurriedly slunk away down the corridor.

It was only then that the other employees who had gathered to watch the commotion quickly dispersed, all bowing their heads as they returned to their offices.

Only Gavin Dawson was left standing there, thinking that Matthew Walker’s anger was on his behalf. He immediately felt a bit uneasy, silently reminding himself that he really could only observe, not cure, and that he must make this clear later to avoid further misunderstanding.

“Heh, Mr. Du, come with me.” After venting, Matthew Walker finally felt a bit better and spoke to Gavin Dawson.

Soon after, the two of them arrived at the president’s office.

As soon as the door closed, Gavin Dawson immediately began to explain again, “President Wang, I truly regret your illness, but I really am unable to help. I hope you’ll seek treatment at the hospital as soon as possible.”

“Heh, I know.” Gavin Dawson had been worried he wouldn’t be able to explain himself, but Matthew Walker waved his hand and interrupted him. “I was indeed a bit muddled last night. But you can still work at Chuangyuan without worry.”

“Hm?” Gavin Dawson paused, thought it over, and realized that perhaps time had allowed Matthew Walker to regain his clarity. He breathed a sigh of relief. Still, he felt a bit sorry for the man who had given him his first job—how could he have gotten cancer?

“Heh, as for salary, our standard at Chuangyuan is a three-month probation period with a base salary of eighteen hundred, plus commission. After becoming a full employee, the base salary is twenty-two hundred. If you have no objections, you can report to the design department.” Matthew Walker noticed the change in Gavin Dawson’s expression and felt a bit more fondness for him. This young man was really not bad. Yesterday, he had kindly reminded him, and even when he was muddle-headed, he had reminded him more than once. If he weren’t sick, he wouldn’t mind giving him a hand, but now, he’d just let him seize the opportunity himself.

“I have no problem, thank you, President Wang. Please take care of yourself.” Gavin Dawson was naturally a bit surprised by the salary. He knew that the cost of living in Hecheng wasn’t high, and as far as he knew, his classmates working as designers at small companies usually only got a base salary of eight or nine hundred during probation. Now his salary had doubled in one go—how could he not be surprised? Probably only a large company like Chuangyuan could offer such good benefits.

“Alright, then you can go.” Matthew Walker waved his hand again. Just as Gavin Dawson was about to leave, he spoke again, “By the way, don’t tell anyone about my cancer.”

“Okay.” Gavin Dawson nodded and then walked out.
