Chapter 5

“Mission start, duration three hours. Repeating the mission: Help Baby Carter sign a contract with Xingyi Entertainment Company. Success will reward three hundred points, failure will deduct one hundred points.”

“Sis, it’s not impossible if you want to get into showbiz, but we need to plan carefully.” James Carter wore a gentle smile, like an old teacher patiently guiding his students.

“Your brain’s really fried. Sis will call 120 for you…” Baby Carter frowned, pulling out her phone to dial.

“120 my ass.” James Carter lunged at his sister like a hungry tiger, hugging her soft body and snatching back the phone.

Baby Carter thought he was trying to grab the phone to report her, so she fought back like a mother hen protecting her chick, clinging to him like a koala, her tall 1.72-meter frame hanging onto him.

James Carter lifted her up with one hand under her butt and tossed her onto the living room sofa, dodging her face-scratching attack while muttering, “Stop messing around, let’s talk business. I agree to let you become a star.”

“Not lying?” Baby Carter’s hair was a mess, her cheeks a bit flushed after the struggle, her big, watery phoenix eyes staring at him.

“Not lying.”

“Good brother, you’re my favorite.” Baby Carter instantly beamed, showering James Carter’s face with kisses.

“But entertainment companies aren’t that easy to get into. Just a pretty face won’t get you in.” James Carter frowned. “Let me think for a bit.”

“No need to think, just don’t report me and we’re good. I’m already prepared.” Baby Carter sat on the sofa like a duck. “When I resigned, my boss asked why, and I said I wanted to try the entertainment industry. He happens to have some connections at Xingyi Entertainment and already put in a word for me. I just need to go for the interview at ten today.”

James Carter suddenly understood. So the path was already paved, and his sister was coming clean because they lived together and she couldn’t hide it from him. And the system’s mission just happened to be Xingyi Entertainment—clearly not a coincidence. Makes sense, too. He’s just a college student; how could he possibly help Baby Carter sign with an entertainment company? This way, the mission’s difficulty drops a lot. Like a newbie just out of the starter village, and the village chief says: Brave warrior, go kill the big boss for me… Oh, and the boss only has one HP left.

Now that’s reasonable.

The interview is at ten, and it’s eight-thirty now, so there’s still plenty of time. Baby Carter happily went to her room to change. When she came out, she looked like a different person: a PORTS women’s business suit, pure white shirt underneath, no stockings, black high heels—she looked every bit the capable and sharp career woman. Her makeup was flawless.

Baby Carter’s features were already perfect, and with makeup, she was simply stunning. James Carter quickly covered his eyes.

“What are you doing?” Baby Carter smoothed her chestnut curls.

“Blinding my dog eyes.” James Carter said exaggeratedly.

“Idiot.” Baby Carter rolled her eyes at him, but the upturned corners of her mouth betrayed her pride.

The siblings took the elevator to the underground parking lot. Baby Carter’s ride was a red BMW, bought with half a year’s salary plus a few thousand from home. She got it at the start of the year—brand new.

In the car, Baby Carter kicked off her heels and tossed them to James Carter in the passenger seat. The little red BMW backed out of the parking spot, got enough space, and shot out like a streak.

Xingyi Entertainment was twenty kilometers from James Carter’s apartment, with a whole district in between. It was rush hour in Shanghai, and the traffic could make you question your existence. After leaving the complex and passing two traffic lights, the little red BMW made it onto the overpass, then started inching along at thirty or forty kilometers per hour, stop and go.

James Carter hugged his sister’s high heels, leaned back, and pretended to nap, communicating with the system in his mind: “What exactly are you?”

“Cosmic Calculation System.”

“What?”

“Intelligent beings in the three-dimensional world have a hard time understanding my definition. My ultimate purpose is to calculate the universe.”

“Why are you in my brain?” James Carter didn’t get it, so he changed the subject.

“Randomly selecting a host. In every time and space, the host I choose is random.”

“Every time and space?” James Carter said, “I don’t get it, but it sounds impressive.”

“Time and space are the greatest mysteries of the universe. Time flows in one direction, space is an endless overlay. The universe is so vast it has no borders, and there are countless planets with intelligent life. My abilities only involve the domain of space, so I’ve been to many times and spaces. Every intelligent being who becomes my host is a prominent figure of their era.”

“Master, please accept my kneeling.” James Carter joked, then said, “I’ve read novels—can I pluck stars and seize the moon, live forever?”

“I’ve been to similar worlds.”

James Carter got excited: “So can I cultivate immortality? Live forever?”

“Ridiculous. Nothing in the world is eternal. Even the sun will end one day. According to my calculations, the universe itself isn’t eternal. Including me.”

“Then can I live as long as the sun?”

“No. The formation of a world depends on many factors. Every world is different, with different laws. In your world, humans simply can’t reach the level of flying through the sky or burrowing into the earth.”
