Chapter 7

Entering the lobby, they asked the receptionist about the interview location. It was in Meeting Room 2 on the seventh floor. The two of them waited for three elevators before finally finding an empty spot. Originally, James Carter wanted to just squeeze in directly, but Baby Carter shot him a look and said, “What if someone grabs my butt?”

James Carter thought to himself, That makes so much sense I have nothing to say.

Actually, Baby Carter had been once bitten, twice shy. When she was in middle school, she took the subway home during rush hour. The carriage was packed with people shoulder to shoulder, and a subway pervert secretly groped her. Without a word, Baby Carter turned around and kneed him right in the groin. Ever since then, her dad would pick her up from school, or she’d take a taxi.

On the seventh floor, the receptionist opened the access gate for them, asked about their purpose, and with a smile handed Baby Carter a number slip, saying, “The meeting room is straight ahead on the left.”

“Thank you!” Baby Carter put the number slip into her bag and pulled James Carter along inside.

In the spacious, bright corridor, a dozen or so handsome men and beautiful women were either sitting or standing. A female staff member, dressed in a simple OL suit with a name badge hanging from her neck, stood at the meeting room door. When she saw Baby Carter and James Carter, she greeted them with a smile, not even glancing at James Carter, and said, “Give me your resume and number slip.”

Baby Carter took out the prepared resume from her bag and handed it over with the number slip. The assistant glanced through it, confirmed that Baby Carter was indeed an interviewee, and politely said, “Please wait a moment.”

Baby Carter pulled James Carter to sit on a bench in the corridor and lowered her head to play on her phone.

James Carter whispered, “So annoying.”

“Annoyed about what?” Baby Carter tilted her head, looking at him curiously.

“She didn’t even look at me just now.”

Baby Carter giggled, “That just means she has good taste.”

“You don’t seem nervous at all.” James Carter poked his sister’s slim waist.

“You’re the one who’s nervous,” Baby Carter said.

“I’m not nervous, I just feel uncomfortable. They’re all looking at you.”

Baby Carter turned to look at the sharply dressed handsome guys. Some instinctively avoided her gaze, while others smiled confidently. Baby Carter flashed a bright smile, making many men’s hearts race wildly.

She withdrew her gaze and hummed, “Ignore them, I’m used to it anyway.”

“But I’m not. Wherever you go, you’re like a giant panda, and I’m just the bamboo next to the panda,” James Carter said gloomily. “Bamboo has dignity too, you know.”

“Alright, alright, bamboo, let this panda take a bite.” As she spoke, she leaned her delicate face over, pretending to bite James Carter’s cheek.

James Carter quickly pushed her away and whispered, “What are you doing? So many people are watching.”

Baby Carter snorted and continued playing on her phone. “I’m not nervous. There’s nothing to be nervous about. If the interview doesn’t work out, I’ll just try another company. Entertainment companies have all kinds of ways to discover new talent. Ordinary people have plenty of ways to become stars, and there are lots of singing variety shows too.”

“Wang Lihong!”

“It’s my turn?”

“Come in.”

The previous interviewee was a cute, delicate girl, head down and looking dejected, as if she was about to cry.

“How was it? Did you pass?”

“What did they ask in the interview?”

Immediately, people crowded around to ask, all talking at once.

James Carter perked up his ears.

The girl shook her head. “They said I can’t sing, and I’m not professionally trained, so I didn’t meet the signing requirements.”

Another girl trying to make it in showbiz with her looks, James Carter thought, glancing at the beautiful woman beside him who also wanted to make a living off her looks.

“What? I can sing pretty well too,” the beauty glared at him.

Time passed quickly as each interviewee went in one by one, each taking about five minutes. Some came back with happy faces, others came out looking glum.

A handsome young man came out of the meeting room, beaming with pride. He scanned the corridor, strode over to Baby Carter, sat down beside her, and said politely, “Hi beautiful, my name is Henry Clark!”

Baby Carter glanced at him and smiled, “Hello.”

“You’re here for the interview too? I guarantee, with your qualifications, you’ll definitely get signed by Xingyi. We’ll be colleagues soon. How about having lunch together?” The young man was clearly smitten by her smile.

Baby Carter rolled her eyes, then hugged James Carter’s arm. “Honey, how about we have spicy hot pot for lunch?”

“Sure, but no spicy hot pot for dinner.”

“You’re so annoying.”

Henry Clark left awkwardly.

James Carter watched his dejected back and grinned at Baby Carter, “The spicy hot pot joke is too old. Use a new one next time.”

“Baby Carter!”

The female assistant called at the door.

“It’s my turn.” Baby Carter handed her bag to James Carter, her high heels clicking on the polished tiles, her hips swaying with extra charm.

She pushed open the faux-wooden door. A long conference table was set by the floor-to-ceiling windows, with the interviewers sitting behind it: three pot-bellied uncles and two middle-aged women.

The uncles’ eyes lit up in unison when they saw Baby Carter enter.

Even prettier than in the photos!

No wonder she’s confident about making it in showbiz. These days, if you don’t have the looks, you really don’t have the guts to wade into the entertainment industry.
