“What is the Energy Training Manual? I’ve only ever heard of the Youth Training Manual.”
“Hold on a moment…” A few seconds later, the system replied, “I searched for it. In human terms: Qi cultivation!”
“Come on! Didn’t they say you can’t become an immortal in this world? No supernatural beings after the founding of the country?”
“According to the literature of this world, the human body does contain qi. Through qi cultivation, one can prolong life and also gain great strength. Essentially, it’s a process of humans absorbing external energy, just like charging a phone. But the so-called ‘great strength’ is only relative to ordinary people; it’s still within the realm of biology. There’s no such thing as becoming an immortal.”
At this moment, she saw Baby Carter walk out with a gloomy look on her pretty face.
Chapter 6: Energy Training Manual
Baby Carter’s beautiful face was clouded as she walked up to James Carter, pouting, looking like she was about to cry.
James Carter rolled his eyes. “Cut it out. You passed the interview, didn’t you?”
Baby Carter immediately changed her expression. “How did you know?”
“We’ve known each other since we wore split-crotch pants. I know you better than the roundworms in your belly,” James Carter said disdainfully.
In the meeting room, after discussing with everyone, Mr. Bolton said loudly, “This Baby Carter is quite good. The company needs talent like her. I propose we give her this D-level contract. What does everyone think?”
The other interviewers all expressed no objections.
“Wait a minute!” William Grant said loudly.
Mr. Bolton frowned. “Manager Grant, go ahead.”
William Grant didn’t answer, just lowered her head and fiddled with her phone, her fingers flying.
Couldn’t find the song title. Maybe the title was fake. Need to search the lyrics.
Nothing?
Impossible!
William Grant had no choice but to say, “That song just now felt really familiar to me. Maybe it’s a cover of another song. How could someone who’s never studied music write and compose a song? Don’t you all find it odd?”
“There are always geniuses with special talents in certain areas. Not having studied music doesn’t mean you can’t write a good song,” Mr. Bolton said. “Familiar? Does anyone else find it familiar? I’ve never heard that melody before.”
The others shook their heads, indicating they hadn’t heard it.
William Grant was unwilling to give up, but at that moment Mr. Bolton waved his hand and said calmly, “It’s our HR department’s job to discover talent for the company. If she were just a pretty face, I’d just go along with it and give the contract to you. But she clearly has great potential, which is obvious to everyone. In the workplace, the capable rise and the incapable fall. As for your niece, let’s put that aside for now.”
In the corridor, James Carter received a prompt: “Congratulations, host, you’ve completed the task. Reward: 300 points!”
It worked!
He was delighted, just about to speak, when the meeting room door opened and the assistant came out. “Baby Carter, come in for a moment!”
Everything that followed went just as James Carter expected. Baby Carter successfully signed the contract, then went through the onboarding procedures, running around with the female assistant to complete the process. James Carter sent her a message saying he was going downstairs for some fresh air.
James Carter had heard online that entertainment company contracts were full of tricks and all sorts of harsh clauses, but he wasn’t worried at all. Baby Carter was at least a graduate of a top university, her IQ was at least as high as his, and she’d worked at a foreign company for a year, so she was well-versed in the ways of the workplace.
He walked out of the Xingyi building, lit a cigarette by the busy street, and finally felt alive again, his fatigue easing a bit. When he got in the elevator earlier, his legs had been shaking.
James Carter opened the system interface, and sure enough, the points mall icon was now lit up. He clicked on it.
The interface changed, displaying a dazzling array of categories: entertainment, art, life, machinery, finance, language, industry, literature, computers, martial arts, sports…
“What are all these?” James Carter was dumbfounded, feeling like he’d just opened some kind of lifestyle app.
“The host can use points to exchange for any item inside,” the system said. “Please check the details yourself.”
James Carter clicked into the entertainment category, which was further divided into many types: film and TV, music, variety shows, crosstalk… all sorts of options.
He then clicked on “music.” The interface changed, and a list of songs popped up: Mandarin, Cantonese, English, Russian, and so on. Every song was grayed out, with a points value at the end. He spotted the song called “Invisible Wings”—exchange points: 30!
Suddenly, the system’s words echoed in James Carter’s mind: “I can change your life, change your destiny…”
After today, the trajectory of his life would change. His future would be completely different.
No, not just his life.
James Carter was suddenly filled with lofty ambition—I am a man who will change the world.
Half an hour later, Baby Carter came out of the building, her face beaming with joy.
James Carter waved at her. As she approached, she put on a stern face. “What kind of monster are you? Reveal your true form to this fairy!”
As she spoke, she reached out to grab James Carter’s neck.
James Carter pressed her smooth forehead and pushed her away. “You, a fairy? More like an old immortal aunt.”
“Tell me, where did that song come from? When did you learn to write songs? How come I didn’t know?” Baby Carter puffed out her cheeks.
