Chapter 9

A new day began. After breakfast, Brian Carter planned to approach the chubby guy in real life—maybe ask his name or something. When he arrived outside a rundown building, he saw the chubby guy acting all sneaky, pushing a typical street food cart loaded with durians.

  Little Brian, “???”

Yesterday, this thick-browed, big-eyed guy was still working at a jewelry store on the main street, and today he’s a street vendor? The kind that gets chased by the police or health department?

Feeling a bit suspicious, Brian Carter suppressed his urge to introduce himself and instead tailed him from a greater distance. Then, to his speechless surprise, he noticed that about twenty or thirty meters behind the chubby guy, there was someone else secretly tailing him.

Is this really a case of “the mantis stalks the cicada, unaware of the oriole behind”? And what’s behind the oriole??

Anyway, with Eric Bennett, Mark Foster, and other “tools” running errands to help him make his first pot of gold in Canada, Brian Carter had plenty of free time.

Curious, he watched as the chubby guy pushed the durian cart into a residential area, parked it near the back stairwell, and disappeared through the back door.

Meanwhile, the person tailing the chubby guy waited stealthily about twenty or thirty meters away.

After waiting for over half an hour, the chubby guy finally came out the back door carrying a human-shaped object wrapped in a big blanket. He quickly stuffed it into the compartment under the durian cart and started pushing the cart home.

On the way home, the chubby guy ran into health department officers chasing street vendors, causing a chaotic scene. But he used the durians from his cart to knock over a few officers and managed to escape.

When he reached the entrance of his old three-story building, the chubby guy carried the person wrapped in the blanket out of the cart, quickly opened the door, and entered the hallway. At that moment, the tall man who had been tailing him from twenty or thirty meters away was snapping photos of the chubby guy carrying the person.

About ten minutes later, the chubby guy changed into his work outfit—white shirt, suspenders, and all—wiped his sweat nervously, and left again.

Judging by the direction, this was finally the way to the company.

After the chubby guy left, the tall young man with the camera headed toward the chubby guy’s home, used a key to unlock the hallway door, and went inside. “This guy actually pulled off a kidnapping? And now there’s a double-cross? No wonder Port Island City is known for its simple, honest folk.”

Watching all this, Brian Carter couldn’t help but comment, tossing his empty water bottle into a roadside trash can before following as well.

A moment later, on the third floor.

As soon as Brian Carter entered, he saw a tall young man opening the wardrobe, trying to move someone out of it… The person inside was clearly unconscious.

Only then did Little Brian get a good look: the person who’d been drugged, wrapped in a big blanket, and brought back by the chubby guy was a stunningly beautiful woman—looked super familiar. The soul diva Old Carter??

Brian Carter suddenly realized—wrong target?? So this was the story?

The chubby guy was actually the protagonist Ethan Price, the one who grumbled at the punching bag every morning, dreaming of uniting everyone earning less than 3,000 yuan a month to overthrow unscrupulous bosses?

He’d followed the jewelry company’s lady boss Mrs. Walker and her brother, carrying a bag of diamonds to do business. Right after finishing the deal and coming downstairs with the money, he got robbed… Not only did he suffer a lot, but the boss also suspected he was an inside man colluding with the robbers, and the police interrogated him?

In a moment of desperation, he plotted to kidnap Mrs. Walker, but by accident ended up kidnapping the boss Mr. Walker’s daughter Julia Walker?

Now, the chubby guy was calling Mr. Walker, planning to use Julia Walker as a hostage for ransom? Asking for 800,000? He claimed he was holding Mrs. Walker as leverage, demanded 800,000, and Mr. Walker called him crazy—his wife had already gone to work…

After the call, the chubby guy turned around and saw Mrs. Walker.

Mrs. Walker not only made him deliver goods to the Lijing Hotel, but also lusted after him, exhausting him so much that his back and legs ached before letting him go.

Of course, this Mrs. Walker was the legitimate wife, but Julia Walker wasn’t her daughter—the female lead was the illegitimate daughter raised by Old Zhou of Zhou Jewelry in North America.

A string of thoughts flashed through his mind.

Brian Carter laughed directly, “Bobby, give it up, the place is crawling with cops outside!”

Bobby was the chubby guy’s coworker. By chance, while using the bathroom stall, he overheard the chubby guy in the next stall ranting about kidnapping and extortion, so he decided to tail him and play the oriole.

Whether it was the chubby guy Ethan Price or Bobby, they were both pitiful people who’d taken a wrong turn. Bobby’s misstep was because his longtime girlfriend dumped him for being too poor, which hit him hard, and at work he was often bullied by Mrs. Walker’s brother.

Just as Bobby was about to carry off Julia Walker, he froze, hurriedly pulled up his shirt to cover his face, turned, glanced at Brian Carter standing in the living room, and bolted for the balcony.

Even though the chubby guy’s place was shabby, the open-air balcony had a decent view, and the surrounding buildings were all low and old—there was still a way out.

Brian Carter watched Bobby run without chasing him, even feeling a bit amused. He stepped forward, grabbed the camera Bobby had left on the table while trying to carry someone, and said, “Still using a film camera—only after developing the photos can you have solid proof that the chubby guy kidnapped Julia Walker.”

Next, he walked over to the battered wardrobe, reached in, and carried Julia Walker out, laying her flat on the sofa. After thinking for a moment, he fetched some tap water and splashed it on her face.

  No response…

Little Brian fetched another basin of water and kept pouring it over Julia Walker’s face like a stream.
