Julia Walker was stunned for several more seconds. “You don’t know him? Yet you’re cooking in his house and even started eating? Once again, thank you for saving me, but I’m a bit curious—don’t you think your behavior is rather unreasonable?”
She still didn’t quite believe Brian Carter’s words, nor was she fully convinced he wasn’t the kidnapper.
She hadn’t seen the kidnapper’s face when she was drugged and passed out, and then she’d been unconscious the whole way… When she woke up, she saw Brian Carter pouring water on her, and the place she woke up in was a strange house.
If it weren’t for Brian Carter’s bizarre behavior, from her perspective, the odds of him being the kidnapper would be over 80%!
But what kind of proper kidnapper would just let her run off after waking her up with water?
Brian Carter kept eating, having both the vegetables and noodles, looking completely at ease. “I think it’s perfectly reasonable. By the way, aren’t you tired from bending over like that all this time?”
Julia Walker was still crouched at the doorway, half-bent over, peeking her head in. Only as she spoke did she straighten up and walk inside, still staying by the door. “So, if a kidnapper kidnapped me, what would he want?”
She felt wronged—she was still groggy.
She was the illegitimate daughter of the boss of Zhou Jewelry, never favored by Mrs. Zhou, and had spent most of her years in North America. This time, Old Zhou got sick and called her back… She’d just met Old Zhou and Mrs. Zhou once, then left to return to her hotel.
How did she end up getting kidnapped? She’d been living just fine, only flew back to Hong Kong Island to visit family, never even hoped for any inheritance…
Brian Carter spoke as he ate, “Maybe he saw your family has money and kidnapped you for ransom? Or maybe he thought you’re young, pretty, and have a great figure, and wanted you for your looks?”
“Or maybe he was actually after someone else, got the wrong target, and kidnapped the wrong person?”
As Julia Walker listened, she seriously looked around the house for the first time. When she saw a photo in a frame on a table—a young, chubby guy—she pointed at the picture and said, “Is that the kidnapper? I’ve never seen him before, don’t know him.”
Brian Carter nodded. “Yeah, there are photos in the camera of him carrying you up here wrapped in a blanket. He works at Zhou Jewelry in Wan Chai.”
“He’s worked for your family for over ten years, but his monthly salary is still less than three thousand. It’s been tough for him. Last time your company did a diamond deal with some foreigners, and right after they left with the money, they got robbed. The police even suspect he’s the inside man.”
“After all, that wasn’t a small sum. If they find the mole, they’ll go after him for the money. And how did the robbers just happen to block them on their way downstairs right after the diamonds were exchanged for cash?”
“There’s definitely an inside job.”
Julia Walker was shocked. “My dad’s employee? There’s something like this? So, who do you think the mole is from the last robbery?”
Brian Carter replied seriously, “Now we’re talking business. If I find the mole and help you recover the stolen money, will I get a reward?”
He was just a broke guy who happened to run into these people and this situation while getting familiar with the world. That Zhou Jewelry robbery case??
Julia Walker was very pretty, but more importantly, it was about the money. He’d saved her in passing, and it wasn’t convenient to ask for a cash reward directly, but if he helped recover the stolen cash, asking for a reward seemed reasonable, right?
Chapter 8: Seems Like Something Strange Has Gotten Mixed In
After a while, Julia Walker borrowed Brian Carter’s cell phone to call her father. She didn’t mention the kidnapping, just asked about the recent diamond deal robbery.
After she hung up, she sat across from Brian Carter and sighed, “Now I’m finally sure you’re not the kidnapper. A real kidnapper wouldn’t kindly lend me his cell phone to call home.”
“This is a cell phone number, not a public phone booth.”
Brian Carter came back with a second bowl of tomato and egg noodles. “You really don’t want any? It’s been half a day, you’ve been rolled around in a cart, you must be tired and hungry…”
Julia Walker, “……”
She took a deep breath and suddenly felt her whole stomach blooming, and her mouth started watering. “It smells so good??”
In her mind, now that she was sure Brian Carter wasn’t the kidnapper, she wasn’t so scared or wary anymore—and she really was hungry.
At the point of exhaustion and hunger, smelling such a delicious aroma, she didn’t even say anything—her stomach just started growling.
Brian Carter put down his bowl and went to the kitchen to get her a bowl as well.
…………
After Julia Walker had eaten three big bowls, and when the noodles ran out halfway, Brian Carter cooked more, she lay on the sofa rubbing her little belly.
Little Brian brought over two cups of tea. “How about moving a bit? I cooked, you wash the pots and dishes.”
Julia Walker tried to move, then flopped back down. “I really don’t want to move. Who taught you to cook? Even these plain noodles taste amazing.”
“Oh right, Brian, you’re only 18? Why aren’t you still in school?”
While they were eating, they’d exchanged information—Brian Carter’s name, the identity arranged for him by the mall, and so on.
He wasn’t a kidnapper, so there was nothing inappropriate to talk about.
Brian Carter sipped his tea and complained, “Why keep studying? I’m already an adult. My aunt and uncle raised me till now, it’s time I get out into society and make money.”
Julia Walker immediately sat up, curious. “True, your aunt has taken good care of you. So what do you plan to do? Become a chef?”
“You’re so good at cooking. If you opened a restaurant, I’d definitely come often…”
