Brian Carter got out of his own car and took the driver’s seat in the Ferrari.
When the beautiful woman got in, Brian Carter had already fastened his seatbelt and started the engine.
“Do you know how to use the gear shift…”
As the woman asked Brian Carter, he was already watching the rearview mirror and backing the car out.
The V8 twin-turbo engine let out a deep roar, and the car slowly started moving.
“Can you go faster…”
The woman looked truly impatient. As she urged Brian Carter, she almost bit her own tongue.
Although the 488 is a relatively entry-level model among Ferraris, a supercar is still a supercar. With 0-100 km/h in 3 seconds and 0-200 in 8 seconds, as soon as Brian Carter floored the gas, the woman who was talking almost bit her tongue.
Brian Carter squeezed through the gap between two cars in a thrilling maneuver, then said casually, “Let me make this clear first. With the current traffic, it’ll take an hour and a half to get to the airport at normal speed. Getting there in forty minutes isn’t impossible, but it’ll definitely mean serious speeding and a whole lot of tickets. If you actually get caught, your license is as good as gone. I just want to make that clear up front.”
“No problem.”
The woman looked completely unconcerned.
Brian Carter suddenly swerved past a car, then laughed and said, “As long as you know, so you won’t blame me later. Actually, I should thank you for giving me a chance to race. Hold on, I’m about to start.”
There were a lot of cars, but with a supercar with endless power, Brian Carter could always weave through the traffic. After all, it wasn’t rush hour yet—if the cars were lined up in a long queue, then he’d really have to switch to a plane.
The woman seemed preoccupied. Brian Carter’s driving was definitely thrilling, but she just stared out the window without any reaction at all.
“So, are you in a hurry to get to the airport to see someone off?”
“Yeah.”
Hearing Brian Carter’s attempt at small talk, the woman just responded softly.
“Boyfriend?”
“Sort of.”
Brian Carter chuckled, looking quite pleased with himself. “I figured as much.”
Taxi drivers are usually chatty, and even though Brian Carter wasn’t driving a taxi, he was pretty much the same. So he couldn’t help but make conversation, especially since his passenger was a beautiful woman—otherwise, how boring would it be?
“You just got back from abroad, right? England?”
The woman finally turned to look at Brian Carter, focusing her gaze on him, and asked in surprise, “How did you know?”
Brian Carter replied smugly, “Observation. If you pay a little attention, it’s obvious. You drove out of the neighborhood gate and immediately got onto the left lane. You didn’t use your turn signal, but your wipers came on. Most people would hit the brakes, but if you did that, you’d have crashed into the oncoming car. You accelerated in time and made the turn without crashing. Judging by your reaction, you’re not a newbie. If you’re not a newbie, then you must be used to driving right-hand drive cars, right?”
“Then why did you say I’m from England? Japan also drives on the left.”
Brian Carter grinned proudly.
“Your bag. That bag is from a small handmade brand in West London. It’s not even really a brand, just a family-run workshop. So while it’s not cheap, it’s not a big name either. I just happen to know it. With those two clues, it’s enough to tell you’re from England. Simple, right?”
“Then why do you think I’m going to the airport to see someone off? Why couldn’t I be picking someone up?”
Brian Carter laughed, and after weaving dangerously past two cars in an S-curve, said, “You don’t look like you’re rushing to catch a flight. If you were picking someone up, being late isn’t great, but you wouldn’t be this desperate, right? So you must be seeing someone off. Usually, when someone’s in such a hurry like the sky is falling, it’s for a boyfriend. Hey, I was just guessing. If I’m wrong, that’s normal, don’t take it personally.”
The woman just nodded and fell silent, leaving Brian Carter a bit disappointed as he waited for her to say “you’re amazing.”
“So? Had a fight with your boyfriend?”
Brian Carter finally got the cold shoulder, as the woman ignored him.
Feeling a bit awkward, Brian Carter finally shut up. But his chatty nature soon got the better of him, especially when he saw in the rearview mirror that the beautiful woman was biting her lip, looking aggrieved, as if she was about to cry. He felt he had a responsibility to comfort her.
“Miss, you really are beautiful, but it feels a bit inappropriate for me to keep calling you ‘beautiful woman’ all the time—it makes me sound so flirty. So, if you don’t mind, could you tell me your name?”
The woman still ignored him, so Brian Carter’s ego took a hit. He forced a bitter smile and said, “My name is Brian Carter—not the ‘overflowing enthusiasm’ kind of Yang Yi, but the ‘once and for all’ Yi.”
“My name is Grace Bennett, the ‘ran’ from ‘time flies’ (时光荏苒).”
“Great name! Sounds just like a main character’s name.”
Brian Carter complimented her offhandedly, but the woman quickly killed his desire to keep chatting.
“Just focus on driving. Also, I want some quiet.”
Brian Carter wisely didn’t ask who Quiet was.
