Chapter 9

David Thompson reached out to press down on the small notebook, speaking in a low voice: "You need to think carefully. This address book may look simple, but once you look at it, it means saying goodbye to a peaceful life."

Brian Carter frowned and said, "Why? Can't I just take a look and then decide? Maybe after I see it, I won't do anything at all."

David Thompson shook his head and said gravely, "I can tell you that what's recorded here are names and phone numbers. They're all your father's old friends or business partners, and every single one of them is a spy. This little notebook is a spy network. Once you've seen what's in here, it means you can get in touch with a spy network. With your father's status and connections when he was alive, this address book is enough for you to accomplish many big things."

Brian Carter laughed and said, "It's not like I have to contact them."

David Thompson still shook his head, his voice serious: "Once you have this address book, you become a threat to any country, at the very least an unstable factor. I only have two choices: either have someone watch you for the rest of your life, or let you leave this country. What do you think I'll choose?"

Brian Carter sighed, wiped his eyes, and then slowly said, "As for revenge, I don't think it means much, but I've always doubted how my mother really died, so I've always imagined taking revenge. Even though all these years I've never told anyone, never shown it."

David Thompson just calmly watched Brian Carter.

Brian Carter smiled, lowered his voice: "My memory is too good. Having a photographic memory sounds wonderful, but for me it's a kind of pain, because I can't forget my mother, can't forget every little thing from my childhood, can't forget my mother's love for me, can't forget my love for her. My father was rarely home, so my feelings for him aren't that strong, but he was still my father and treated me well. The longing isn't that strong, but it's not absent. As for my mother..."

Brian Carter reached up to smooth his long hair, then said in a deep voice, "Do you think I would not avenge the mother I've missed day and night for eleven years?"

David Thompson let out a long sigh and said quietly, "Have you made up your mind?"

Brian Carter replied calmly, "From the moment I saw you, I knew my chance had come. I've waited eleven years for this opportunity, and I never thought it would come, so there's no need to ask these questions anymore."

David Thompson slowly removed his hand from the small notebook, then said expressionlessly, "I'll give you a month to leave Huaxia. Wherever you want to go, I'll arrange the paperwork for you. Also, I'll personally sponsor you with a hundred thousand yuan. I don't have much savings, so that's all I can give you. Now, you can take this address book."

Chapter 5: The Road Ahead

Brian Carter stood up and walked to the table.

It was called an address book, but it was actually just a folded piece of paper. Brian Carter didn't hesitate and reached out his hand.

But David Thompson's hand, which had been set aside, suddenly flipped back and covered the thin, folded slip of paper again.

"Once you take this, you can't come back. You'll never be able to come back. I haven't really taken care of you all these years, but I've always been watching over you. So, I sincerely hope you won't go down this path. The world is big and wonderful, and you have countless better roads to choose from."

David Thompson seemed a bit sentimental, and he sincerely gave Brian Carter one last piece of advice.

"Uncle Thompson, I understand, but this is my choice."

David Thompson let out a long sigh, turned his face to the side, and once again removed his hand.

"Thank you, Uncle Thompson. I'm not thanking you for giving me this address book, but for trying to stop me from taking it, and for all the care you've given me over the years."

After sincerely thanking David Thompson, Brian Carter finally picked up the slip of paper.

David Thompson didn't look at Brian Carter, and said calmly, "Where do you want to go?"

"England, I guess. After all, I've spent many years there."

"Do you want to see your aunt? I think you don't have much feeling for your uncle, whom you only met once, but for your aunt who took care of you for six years, maybe you'd like to see her."

Brian Carter's eyes widened. "Is that possible?"

"It's not very convenient, but it's possible."

Brian Carter hesitated for a moment, but in the end shook his head and said softly, "Forget it. Feelings fade with time. Even though I do miss her, for my aunt, it's best if she can forget me. So I don't think seeing her before I leave is the right choice."

David Thompson sighed, "You're still so young, but you always sound so old and world-weary. If you don't want to see her, then don't. I'll handle the paperwork for you to go to England. What identity do you want?"

"Um, can you prepare a few more identities for me?"

David Thompson glanced at Brian Carter and said in a low voice, "No! Sending you away is to eliminate potential risks. Preparing several identities for you would be abusing my position for personal gain, so I can't do it."

Brian Carter gave a wry smile, "You make it sound so serious."

David Thompson replied calmly, "People like us must strictly adhere to our bottom line. If we cross the line on small things, then when it really matters, there will be no bottom line left."

Brian Carter said with a smile, "Alright, I understand. Then my driver's license..."
