So that Eric Palmer also couldn’t escape the fate of not getting away, regardless of whether he was actually involved or not. Since a suspect had identified him, naturally he had to be investigated.
Brian Carter was a bit stunned. He had just wanted to make some extra money, but now it looked like not only would he not get paid, but he might not even be able to keep his driver’s license.
Brian Carter wasn’t worried about proving his innocence—he had plenty of solid evidence. No matter what, he wouldn’t be implicated in the car theft. But since he was the one driving, he probably wouldn’t be able to keep his license.
Losing something big for something small—regret was useless now.
Grace Bennett looked at the police again, pointed at Brian Carter, and said loudly, “He’s the ride-hailing driver I hired. This has nothing to do with him. Let him go.”
“Let him go? Don’t be ridiculous. If there’s something to say, say it back at the station first. Take them all away and hold them separately.”
Brian Carter looked helplessly at Grace Bennett, and the last thing Grace Bennett shouted at him before being dragged away was: “I’ll pay you the money!”
Chapter 3: Something Even More Important
It was the first time he’d been put in a police car, the first time he’d been taken to a police station.
They arrived at a precinct, and the interrogation began immediately.
Leniency for confession, severity for resistance—Brian Carter was seeing an interrogation room for the first time. Looking at the two big characters on the wall, the two officers in front of him began to speak.
“Tell us, what exactly happened?”
Brian Carter snapped back to reality, then said helplessly, “I’m still confused about what’s going on. This really has nothing to do with me. I’m just a ride-hailing driver. Someone hired me to drive for them, and I came on a whim. There’s nothing much to say. My car has a dashcam, and there’s evidence in there that can prove my innocence. Anyway, it’s just bad luck. If I get fined or punished, I’ll accept it.”
“Let’s not talk about whether you’re involved in the car theft for now. Man, you dared to drive 220 on the Fifth Ring Road? You’ve got some guts. Do you know how serious this is? In broad daylight, you guys…”
The officer interrogating Brian Carter was still talking when suddenly the door to the interrogation room was knocked on. Then a high-ranking officer pushed open the door. He didn’t come in, just said to the two interrogating officers, “You two leave. Leave the transcript.”
The two officers in charge of the interrogation looked a bit surprised, but they left the room as quickly as possible. Then, the door opened again, and this time a middle-aged man in a suit came in.
The man looked to be about fifty, with extremely ordinary features—nothing about him stood out at all. He was so ordinary that it was hard to describe.
The middle-aged man walked into the interrogation room, glanced at Brian Carter, then sat down in the interrogator’s seat and picked up the transcript to look at it.
Noticing that the red light indicating the camera was on had gone out, Brian Carter was completely surprised, but not suspicious. He just felt that the moment he’d been waiting for was finally about to arrive.
When Brian Carter took a closer look at the man in the suit, he suddenly smiled and said softly, “No need to look at the transcript. The interrogation hasn’t even really started yet. Uncle Thompson, long time no see. I didn’t expect to meet you here.”
The middle-aged man whom Brian Carter called Uncle Thompson looked up in great surprise, then said in a low voice, “You can recognize me?”
Brian Carter nodded, then said calmly, “It’s been eleven years, right? At night, and it was raining. You and my dad came to our house. He told me to call you Uncle Thompson. We rarely had guests at home, so I remember you quite well.”
Uncle Thompson put down the interrogation record, nodded, and said with emotion, “Back then you were just a little kid, and you can still remember my face. You’ve got a good memory.”
“A lot of people say that. I have a photographic memory. Sometimes it bothers me, because there are a lot of things I wish I could forget but can’t.”
“That’s hereditary. Your father had a photographic memory too. I always admired that about him, and envied that talent. Looks like you inherited it.”
The two of them fell into a brief silence, until Brian Carter finally spoke first: “How should I address you now?”
“You can call me David Thompson, or keep calling me Uncle Thompson, or just call me Uncle if you want.”
“So David Thompson is a fake name, then.”
After a moment’s silence, David Thompson nodded, but then said, “No need to be so serious. Just treat it as my real name.”
Brian Carter raised his cuffed hands: “Uncle, can you take these off? They’re really uncomfortable.”
“I don’t have the key. Just bear with it for now. It’s not good to keep bothering others. I really shouldn’t be here in the first place.”
Brian Carter sighed, then said seriously, “If the motherland is like a mother, then I must be very filial, because this country has treated me well. After my parents died, I’ve still lived a good life all these years. Now, you suddenly show up here, and it’s made me a bit confused, but it’s also made me realize a lot of things.”
After a pause, Brian Carter said calmly, “Let me guess, you’re here to get me out?”
“No, not exactly.”
“Then you’re here to tell me about my parents?”
