Chapter 17

The result came quickly—his phone rang again!

Chapter 13: There’s Something Strange About This!

“Damn it, if soldiers come, I’ll block them; if water comes, I’ll use earth to stop it. I don’t believe this can kill me!” David Clark slapped his chest hard, then gritted his teeth: “Let’s do this. Let’s see who exactly lost this phone!” Picking up the phone, David Clark finally saw the caller ID—13966888888.

That number is pretty intimidating...

Mentally preparing himself for the possibility that the other party was a mafia boss’s mistress, David Clark wiped the cold sweat from his forehead and finally pressed the answer button: “Hello.”

“Hello.” Sure enough, it was a woman’s voice on the other end, and a very cool, clear one at that, like a glass of water with ice: “You have my phone, right? Tell me, what will it take for you to return it?”

“H-hello.” David Clark gulped, not to mention anything else, just this phone number alone was definitely not something an ordinary person could have. This woman was absolutely someone important, so David Clark replied very cautiously: “Well, it’s nothing really. Where are you? Why did you only call me now? I can bring the phone to you.”

Today has been really unlucky, so the fewer troubles, the better! If I can return it, I’ll do it right away!

“I had an urgent matter yesterday and forgot about it once I got busy.” The woman didn’t say much, just paused for a moment, then said, “How about this, where are you now? I’ll come find you.”

“I’m at Yulin Community, near the park where you lost your phone.” David Clark hesitated for a moment, then said, “How about we meet at the park?”

“The park isn’t convenient. There’s a Petersburg Café nearby, let’s meet there.” The other party was very decisive, not giving David Clark any chance to refuse: “I’ll be there in half an hour.”

“Al... alright.” David Clark glanced at the clothes hanging nearby: “I’m wearing gray jeans and a blue-and-white T-shirt.”

“Okay, got it. See you soon.”

He hung up the phone in a daze.

For David Clark, it felt like all his energy and spirit had hit rock bottom today. There was nothing he could do about it—when his luck dice rolled well, he was unstoppable and everything went smoothly.

But when it rolled badly, he could only accept his fate...

Accept my fate, my ass! I don’t believe it—how much worse can it get?!

Out the door, onto the street!

As soon as he entered the elevator, David Clark braced himself—surely it wouldn’t get stuck again today?!

He got downstairs smoothly.

David Clark: “...”

Huh? Maybe this terrible luck isn’t so scary after all, the elevator didn’t even get stuck...

He almost made it to the entrance of Petersburg Café without a hitch, and David Clark was completely baffled: “What’s going on? Why is everything going so smoothly today?”

His gut told him—there’s something strange about this!

Even though it was still morning, as the best café within five kilometers, many successful people liked to come here for coffee and business talks. So by now, a row of luxury cars was already parked at the entrance—BMWs, Land Rovers, Jaguars—it almost looked like a mini car show!

Not knowing what would happen today, David Clark looked around nervously, clutching the phone as he walked into the café.

But just as he reached the door, he bumped into two people. When he saw their faces clearly, David Clark was stunned.

It was a couple. The woman was above average in looks, wearing light makeup, swaying her slender waist as she walked, and her gaze always carried a hint of hidden arrogance. The man beside her was about 1.7 meters tall, at least thirty-five or thirty-six years old, very ordinary looking—maybe even ugly—but it was obvious he was dressed in designer brands. What especially caught David Clark’s eye was the car key in the young man’s hand. Judging by the logo, it looked like a trident.

A rich guy!

If it were anyone else, it wouldn’t matter, but the key point was that David Clark knew the woman!

It was his ex-girlfriend! Helen Parker!

Normally, if David Clark ran into his ex-girlfriend Helen Parker, it would be at least a little awkward. But today was different—today was extremely unlucky. Could this be the power of bad luck? If so, this result was still acceptable!

“Hi!” David Clark quickly raised his hand to greet them!

According to the usual script, since Helen Parker had found herself a rich guy, she should act a little smug, right? Then say a few things to show off, and then I’d reply with something like “Don’t look down on the poor when they’re young,” and that would be the end of the scene, right?!

But unexpectedly, when Helen Parker saw David Clark, she was stunned, then instinctively gripped the man’s hand tighter.

“You know each other?” The man saw David Clark greet Helen Parker, and instinctively glanced at both their faces, looking suspicious.

“I...” Helen Parker was clearly flustered, not sure whether to deny or admit it. She thought for a while, then said softly, “He was my boyfriend in college, but we broke up a long time ago...”

“Oh.” The man grunted in response, then looked David Clark up and down, then turned to Helen Parker: “So he’s a senior? Do you know his background?”

His words were very tactful, but Helen Parker understood what he meant and hurriedly explained, “Don’t get the wrong idea. Back then, we just had meals and went to class together. Nothing ever happened between us...”
