“Came to pick you up. Now that you’ve finished your exams, you’re basically a graduate. I found you a job running sales in the neighboring district. Your Uncle Guangfeng will take you along. After a few years, once you’ve got some experience, you can do it on your own. If you’re lucky, making four or five thousand a month shouldn’t be a problem. It’s good to start working early.” Henry Morgan said with a beaming smile.
The world had changed, but Dad was still the same Dad. Frank Morgan could feel that familiar warmth that nothing could ever change.
Henry Morgan had already mentioned the sales job to Frank Morgan. Originally, Frank Morgan wanted to surprise his old man, but now he could only bitterly accept the reality that he really was a poor student.
The problem was, he was unwilling to accept it.
In this society, there were cars, cell phones, computers, refrigerators—none of these technological products had changed just because magic had taken over. If you couldn’t become a mage, you’d end up as a worker producing these things. Damn it, how was this any different from his original world? I want to learn magic!!
According to the logic of this world, where nothing else changed, his own talent shouldn’t have changed either. As long as he worked harder in high school and made up for what he’d missed, he could still become a true top student… no, a top mage!
“Dad, I want to keep studying.” Frank Morgan was silent for a long time before finally telling Henry Morgan what was on his mind.
“I thought you didn’t like studying magic?” Henry Morgan raised his eyebrows, looking at him in surprise.
“Uh…” Frank Morgan felt a bit awkward, not sure if his dad would believe him if he told the truth. Sigh, so frustrating.
Henry Morgan looked at his son, who was about to turn sixteen, and once again put on his honest smile. “It’s okay, son. I’m not going to blame you for not working hard at magic. Everyone has their own ambitions.”
“No, I really want to study now.”
“Can you pass the exam?” Henry Morgan asked.
“No.” Frank Morgan answered with certainty.
“Well, there you go. It’s fine. Although the ancients always said, ‘All trades are lowly, only magic is noble,’ there’s also the saying that ‘every field produces its own top experts’…” Henry Morgan continued.
After hearing this, Frank Morgan couldn’t help but smack his lips.
Now, Frank Morgan had to automatically convert a lot of information, but the process left him speechless. For example, he remembered one day when the history teacher told the class: the founder of light magic was “Edison.” At that moment, Frank Morgan felt like a million grass-mud horses were stampeding through his mind!
His dad, Henry Morgan, patted Frank Morgan on the shoulder to comfort him, but then suddenly noticed his son was silent, his expression a bit off.
No one knows a son better than his father. Henry Morgan slowly put away his smile, his voice lowering, “Are you serious?”
“Yeah, I want to get that chance to awaken. I know it’s late to regret now, but I really want to study hard and become a mage.” Frank Morgan said sincerely.
All he needed was a chance!
Henry Morgan fell silent for a moment.
Frank Morgan didn’t say anything more.
“You really want to study?” Henry Morgan confirmed again.
“Really.” Frank Morgan nodded without the slightest hesitation.
At first, Frank Morgan thought he was dreaming, that the world was playing a joke on him. But the truth was, the world really had changed—this wasn’t a dream!
“All right then, I’ll see what I can do.” Henry Morgan didn’t say anything more.
“Dad, I found a summer temp job at Tianlan Magic High School, working in the library. I start the day after tomorrow.” Frank Morgan said.
Since he’d decided to learn magic, Frank Morgan had to give it his all.
Whether he could get into magic high school and get that chance to awaken as a mage depended on his dad, but making up for his lack of knowledge was something he had to do himself. So, knowing he had no hope of passing the entrance exam, Frank Morgan found this job in advance.
The pay was almost nothing—just room and board—but it was really important to Frank Morgan. In the library, he could find so much he needed to catch up on.
Luckily, he really was a genius. In a short time, he’d already made up all the first and second grade elementary school courses… Damn it, why did saying that make him feel like an idiot!
On the side, his dad Henry Morgan saw how determined his son was and was moved.
Since his son was so set on magic, what was there not to be happy about? After all, in this society, only mages truly had status. No matter how many years you ran sales, even if you had a house and a car, it couldn’t compare to the value and respect of a mage who graduated from a magic school.
“Let’s go home first. Leave this to your old man!” Henry Morgan nodded, not saying anything more.

Chapter 2: The Real Class Divide
……
This was a residential area built around a half-city-sized hill. Following the road with the iron fence all the way to the end of the lane was Frank Morgan’s home.
A small, squat building, one and a half stories tall, with peeling paint exposing the red bricks underneath, and lots of clutter around.
Most of the neighbors’ houses were already three and a half stories tall, and after renovations looked much more like real homes. In contrast, Frank Morgan’s house, already in the farthest corner and the lowest, looked especially shabby and old.
