Chapter 10

Anyang Branch of ShenGang City Public Security Bureau, David Harris walked into this unfamiliar place carrying his bag, curiously watching the people in police uniforms coming and going, thinking that he would soon become one of them, which he found rather interesting.

At that moment, someone happened to pass by. David Harris casually asked, “Excuse me, where is the director’s office?”

“Don’t you have eyes?” The person snapped as if he had swallowed gunpowder, and walked inside. Another person hurried after him, calling out to Chief Evans, showering him with compliments.

It really proved that saying true: it’s easy to see the King of Hell, but hard to deal with his little devils. David Harris’s fingers twitched slightly, tempted to teach him a lesson, but just then, a pleasant, sweet voice suddenly came from behind.

“Are you... the new recruit reporting in?”

“Yes!” David Harris replied, turning around, and saw a beautiful woman with long, jet-black hair, holding several files in her crossed arms, with an oval face, willow-leaf eyebrows, sparkling eyes and white teeth, and an elegant, graceful demeanor, looking at him with interest.

Hearing David Harris’s answer, the beauty was delighted and said, “I didn’t expect our Anyang Branch to get such a handsome guy. Handsome, do you have a girlfriend? If not, you can consider your big sister here!!”

Sweat! Who says girls in China are conservative? But David Harris also knew she was just joking, which made her seem even more approachable and easygoing, instantly erasing any sense of distance. This girl was truly outgoing.

Seeing David Harris looking at her, the beauty pursed her lips and smiled, “Just teasing you, don’t be nervous. I was nervous too when I first came. Most people here are really nice. Go up to the sixth floor, our acting director Director Miller is on the east side of the sixth floor.”

Police ID 623566, Nina King. David Harris had already seen the name of this beauty: Nina King. After speaking, Nina King didn’t wait for David Harris to say anything before turning and walking away. After a few steps, she looked back at David Harris with a smile and waved goodbye.

……

“Director Dawson, everything about Eric Beard has been clarified. Back then, he created the medical police position just to arrange a spot for his mistress, purely for personal enjoyment and to collect money. Now this whole thing has become a joke in our Anyang District. If you bring in another medical police now, it’s... it’s really not appropriate.”

Anyang Branch’s Executive Deputy Director Mark Miller was truly anxious at this point, but the person on the other end of the phone was not someone he dared to get angry with.

A few muffled, indistinct sounds came from the phone. Although Mark Miller wore a helpless expression, he kept replying “yes, yes” repeatedly.

In the end, he could only shake his head helplessly, then straightened his expression and said respectfully, “Director Dawson, please rest assured, I guarantee to complete the task.”

After hanging up, Mark Miller shook his head again in resignation. The former Secretary of the Political and Legal Affairs Committee and Director of the Public Security Bureau of Anyang District, Eric Beard, had recently been investigated. Not only had he embezzled tens of millions, but he had also created a medical police position in the Anyang District Public Security Bureau. At the time, it was heavily promoted, and other places wanted to follow suit, but after his downfall, it became a laughingstock for the Anyang District Public Security Branch.

What puzzled Mark Miller even more was that, at a time like this, the higher-ups actually sent another medical police directly. This felt like rubbing salt in the wound, even a slap in the face. But what made Mark Miller think even deeper was that a mere first-level police officer—rank twelve out of the fifteen in the police system—could actually warrant a personal call from the director of the ShenGang City Public Security Bureau, Director Dawson.

ShenGang City is a sub-provincial city, and the director of the Public Security Bureau is at the department level, equivalent to a provincial department head. Could this kid have some background? But if he really had connections, why would he come to be a medical police?

While he was still puzzled, there was a knock at the door. Mark Miller straightened up and adjusted his posture before saying, “Come in.”

The door opened, and in walked David Harris, who had just entered the branch.

David Harris entered, gave a crisp salute, and said calmly, “635790 reporting as ordered.”

Mark Miller glanced at the file on his screen, which had David Harris’s photo and information, just sent from above. This was the very medical police he had just described as a slap in the face for the Anyang Branch, but this person had been personally inquired about by the director.

“Were you in the military?” Mark Miller noticed that David Harris’s walk and salute had a certain vigor, looking a bit like someone with military experience, but his tone didn’t match, so he looked at David Harris with curiosity.

“No.” David Harris remained calm, stepping forward to place his file in front of Mark Miller.

Although David Harris answered Mark Miller’s question, Mark Miller could sense that David Harris’s demeanor was completely unaffected—so casual, so indifferent, as if nothing could faze him.

This only made Mark Miller even more suspicious. This kid must have some connection to Director Dawson, otherwise, how could a subordinate police officer be so calm in front of him?

Thinking of this, Mark Miller relaxed his own demeanor, trying not to act like a superior. He picked up David Harris’s file with one hand and gestured to the seat in front of him with the other. “Have a seat...”

Originally, Mark Miller wanted to say “Don’t be nervous, don’t be restrained,” but after seeing David Harris, he swallowed those words. This kid didn’t look nervous or restrained at all.
