Chapter 13

There was a brief silence: “Young master, for the first time in three years, the young lady took five days off to arrange everything for you. She said she found the apartment for you through an ‘ordinary’ agency, and it’s a shared rental. She hopes you can experience a period of normal, ordinary life.”

“Got it.” David Harris hung up the phone. The sister who used to help him fight against the family and strive for his freedom—what’s gotten into her lately?

Then David Harris turned to look at that door again, and couldn’t help but recall Julia Reed’s panicked expression just now. Was it intentional? Or unintentional?

……

After entering the room, Julia Reed took a full two minutes to calm down a bit. She didn’t change her clothes right away, but instead found her phone and made a call.

As soon as the call connected, Julia Reed immediately said angrily, “Nancy Walker, I just arrived in Shenzhen-Hong Kong and got to the place I’m staying, why is there a guy here?”

After calming down, Julia Reed wasn’t stupid. She realized that David Harris clearly meant no harm, and seeing the key in his hand, it was obvious he had entered normally. Nancy Walker was Julia Reed’s best friend—they’d grown up together. This time, both the job and the apartment were arranged by Nancy Walker. Nancy Walker happened to be out of town these days, so she had left the key at the airport’s storage in advance. Julia Reed picked it up with her ID and came straight over.

“A guy… oh, you mean your roommate? I didn’t know he was a guy either. Is he handsome? What’s wrong, did he bully you? Just tell him my name. If he dares to mess with you, wait till I get back and see how I deal with him.”

Julia Reed was in no mood for jokes: “Damn Nancy Walker, I’ll smack you, Nancy Walker. Hurry up and tell me what’s going on. What the hell did you do?”

The person on the other end clearly realized Julia Reed was truly angry now, and hurriedly said, “Sister Yunyi, rent is sky-high everywhere in Shenzhen-Hong Kong right now, especially in the city center. Just a random place could cost you half a month’s salary. It just so happened this guy was looking for a roommate, and his price was super cheap, just with a few more requirements. I just shared a bit of your info with him, and it actually worked out. Sister Yunyi, you studied abroad, it’s just a shared rental, what’s the big deal? Besides, I’ll be back in a few days. Don’t worry, I’ve got your back.”

Julia Reed, who had been furious, suddenly felt her anger dissipate. Now that jobs were hard to find, even with overseas experience it was tough to land a satisfying one. She urgently needed to make money to improve her family’s situation, so saving money was a must.

Hearing her fall silent, Nancy Walker said, “I’ll send you a phone number in a bit—it’s for our taekwondo club. If anything happens, call that number. I can’t talk now, I’ve got something to do here.”

With that, the call ended. Julia Reed stared at her phone for a while, then sighed helplessly. Studying abroad doesn’t make everyone open-minded, clearly. Julia Reed wasn’t exactly conservative, but she wasn’t open either. She’d rather commute over an hour each day from a small town to school, and for years had boarded with an elderly couple in that town. So she really wasn’t used to this kind of shared living.

No matter what, feeling a bit unsettled, she changed her clothes first. Then she carefully listened for sounds outside. Hearing nothing, she slowly opened the door a crack and peeked out.

Chapter 6: The Beautiful Roommate (Part 2)

There was no sign of David Harris in the living room. Julia Reed pushed the door open a bit wider and saw David Harris in the opposite room, unpacking things from his boxes. By now, Julia Reed understood that he really was her roommate. She’d tried that room when she arrived—it had been locked.

Opening the door, Julia Reed couldn’t help but check her clothes before stepping out. She couldn’t help but recall that awkward moment earlier, and her panicked reaction. Her face flushed red, and she stood at the doorway looking across for a while before regaining her composure.

David Harris moved very quickly. By the time Julia Reed opened her door and walked over, he had already finished unpacking his boxes. These were just his usual things, daily necessities—just like before, he hardly needed to think about anything else. Clearly, the housekeeper had taken care of it all.

With David Harris’s sharp hearing, he could tell every move Julia Reed made, even without looking—it was as if he’d seen it all. When Julia Reed reached the doorway, David Harris turned to look at her.

Julia Reed’s face was still a bit flushed, and she looked at David Harris a little awkwardly. “Just now… just now…”

“Heh…” David Harris gave a faint smile. “Sorry about earlier. I didn’t expect anyone to be here, so I just came in.”

As a man, and having gotten the better end of things earlier, he knew he had to apologize. David Harris’s words immediately eased Julia Reed’s embarrassment.

“Actually, I was a bit… surprised too, so I overreacted… I didn’t know it was a shared rental, and that…”

With the tension eased, things weren’t so awkward anymore, and Julia Reed relaxed a lot.

David Harris also smiled and said, “I didn’t expect my roommate to be a beauty, either.”
