Outside the train car was a station platform. Brian Carter thought for a moment about the scenes from the movie Resident Evil 1; this should be the place where everyone first enters the Hive, that is, the entrance to the underground laboratory.
The group followed the platform upwards, and soon, at the junction of the station platform and the lab entrance, a sealed steel door blocked their way. On the door was a set of special symbols, indicating the company that owned the lab and the dangers present here!
Brian Carter and the others kept close behind the mercenaries. When they reached the door, a beautiful woman in a fiery red dress with a high slit suddenly asked the black man, Matthew Addison, “I want to know who you are. And what exactly is going on here?”
Matthew Addison turned to look at her. He waved to the other mercenaries, who quickly took some devices from their packs and began hacking the door, while he continued speaking to the woman: “We are employed by the UMBRELLA Corporation, and that includes you... This door leads to the ‘Hive.’ You are the company’s registered security personnel for this door, which is why we brought you along.”
Brian Carter remembered this scene—this was when the heroine, Alice, asked about the cause of the whole incident. Although he had seen the movie and knew the truth, witnessing it in person gave him a dizzying sense of reality.
Alice looked confused at his words. She stroked a wedding ring on her finger and murmured, “Then what is this?”
Matthew Addison nodded and said, “You’re not actually married. It’s just a cover, and also a sign that you’re protecting the Hive.”
“Then what is the Hive?”
A man who was not a mercenary suddenly asked. Brian Carter recognized him—he was the cause of the whole incident, the corporate spy planning to steal the T-virus, Ryan, also the male lead of Resident Evil 1.
Matthew Addison said to another mercenary, “Show them.”
The man nodded, then began typing rapidly on his laptop. After a moment, some images appeared on the screen.
“This is the passage into the Hive... The Hive is deep beneath Raccoon City. This is the building where we found you. Here, we took the train down underground, and the train brought us to the entrance of the Hive, which is where we are standing now.”
The images on the screen kept changing, and finally, a structure resembling a beehive appeared on the laptop display.
“This is the Hive, a top-secret underground research facility owned and supervised by UMBRELLA. Inside the Hive are five hundred scientists and other staff. They conduct confidential research here according to the company’s needs. These secrets are vital to the company. Of course, even we don’t know what they are. This is our current location, shown by the thermal sensors.”
Matthew Addison kept explaining, and sure enough, the computer screen showed their position—they were standing at the train platform at the top of the Hive. Brian Carter knew that this was currently an absolutely safe place, but in a moment, it would become a death zone.
“What about them?” Alice suddenly pointed at Brian Carter and the others.
Brian Carter and his group were shocked. They had always thought of themselves as people outside of reality—in other words, horror movies were just horror movies, and the characters in the plot couldn’t possibly interact with them. All they needed to do was avoid the terrifying monsters. Who would have thought that the heroine of Resident Evil 1 would actually point at them and speak?
Matthew Addison said, “They’re also security personnel here. The company has their records... But I really doubt the company’s upper management made the right call. Except for that Asian guy, who’s a qualified fighter, the rest are just ordinary citizens.”
This must be the identity that the ‘Lord God’ arranged for them here. Brian Carter and the others suddenly understood.
Ryan asked again, “Why did I lose my memory? I can’t remember anything from my past.”
Matthew Addison replied, “The Hive has its own defense system, controlled by the central computer, the Red Queen. When the Hive is deemed under attack, the central computer releases a neurotoxin that knocks people out for about four hours. When they wake up, there are a series of side effects, one of which is memory loss.”
Ryan asked, “Memory loss? How long does that last?”
Matthew Addison shook his head and said, “It depends on the individual. It could be an hour, a day, or even a week.”
Another young man who wasn’t a mercenary suddenly asked, “You mean the Hive has already been attacked? There are terrorists inside?”
Matthew Addison looked at him and said, “...Maybe it’s even worse than that.”
