Chapter 8

The last ordinary-looking young man said, “David Thompson, a senior high school student. Before coming here, I used to complain about a lot of things, but actually, being here isn’t so bad. As long as you don’t die, you can become a superhuman. And from what Michael Bolton said, as long as we can go back, it seems like these enhanced abilities can be kept. I can’t stand being bullied at school anymore. If I can go back, I’ll definitely kill those bastards!”

A ferocious look appeared on the young man’s face. The other three exchanged glances; they all knew this young man must have always been the target of bullying at school. His complaints must be out of utter disappointment with the real world. Looking at it this way, everyone who came here seemed to have one thing in common: complaints and disappointment with the real world.

At this moment, Michael Bolton and another mercenary returned. As he passed by Laura James, he deliberately gave the girl a hard slap on the butt. Caught off guard, Laura James only had time to let out a sharp scream before Michael Bolton laughed and walked toward Matthew Addison.

“Sir, we found another route, but it’ll probably take more time to get through. We should head back here first, then go through the B Restaurant, and from there go straight to the destination. This route might take twice as long,” said the mercenary beside Michael Bolton.

At this point, the other two scouts had also returned. The long-haired female mercenary named Wayne said, “Sir, it’s completely impassable over there. This floor has been totally flooded.”

Matthew Addison nodded and said, “Alright, then we’ll take the second route. There’s not much time left, so let’s hurry.”

With no other choice, Brian Carter and the others had to follow the main group back the way they came. Fortunately, this time the mercenaries didn’t run. No one knew how far they walked, but eventually everyone stopped outside an iron door. One of the mercenaries used a computer to open the door, and then the people at the front, guns in hand, carefully entered.

It was a vast hall filled with countless small containers, each about several cubic meters in size. A chilling aura constantly seeped out from the containers. Anyone who had seen Resident Evil 1 would know this was the storage for the frozen Lickers. Once the main computer was shut down, these Lickers would become the most terrifying alien creatures, far more dangerous than zombies.

A mercenary looked at the computer and said, “This is the B Restaurant… that’s what the map says.”

Matthew Addison walked over to look at the computer with him, but Matt said from the side, “Maybe there are some secrets hidden here, secrets the company doesn’t want the outside world to know…”

Matthew Addison glanced at him without replying, and just said to the mercenaries beside him, “J.D., Wayne, Michael Bolton, you three watch the prisoners here and guard the exit.”

At this moment, another female mercenary suddenly said, “Sir, the poison gas reading here is zero. Maybe no gas was released here, or maybe the defense system here malfunctioned.”

Matthew Addison nodded and said, “Alright, J.D., Wayne, Michael Bolton, there might still be survivors hiding here. Search the area, but don’t go too far. You must keep an eye on the prisoners and the exit, understand?”

The three all nodded. Only Michael Bolton sneered, pulling a cigarette from his pocket. Anyone who had seen the movie would know—survivors? No, there were no survivors, but plenty of zombies.

The bespectacled girl next to Brian Carter suddenly walked over to Michael Bolton and quietly asked, “I want to know something—can we change the plot of the movie here?”

Michael Bolton nodded and said, “Go on, what else do you want to ask?”

She smiled, her laughter sounding like the tinkling of silver wind chimes. She said, “Then can we use plastic explosives here? If we kill all the Lickers in this room, wouldn’t we get thousands of reward points?”

Michael Bolton also laughed and said, “That’s not wrong. Yes, blowing this place up would get you thousands of reward points. But I have two questions for you. First, do you think they’ll give us time to set up the explosives?” He pointed at the mercenaries.

“They don’t know what any of this is, nor do they know what will happen if the main computer is shut down. If they see us doing something they can’t understand, the most likely outcome is they’ll shoot us first. The result could be that the Lickers are released early. The ‘Lord God’ won’t just let you change the plot so easily. Even if you do, it’ll probably increase the difficulty and throw in some surprises. Got it?”

After answering his own question, Michael Bolton immediately asked, “Second question: in a horror movie, what do you think is our greatest reliance for survival?”

The bespectacled girl was taken aback. She touched her forehead and said, “Strength? No. Luck? Not really, it’s too unpredictable… It must be being familiar with the plot, right?”

Michael Bolton smiled and said, “Bingo, correct. Being familiar with the plot is our greatest reliance. So unless I’m absolutely sure, I will never try to change the plot. And if anyone tries to forcefully change the plot to get reward points, I don’t mind sending them to hell.”
