This young man, Brian Carter, also knew that he was Matt, a non-corporate employee who had come to look for his sister. His sister was a senior researcher inside the Hive. After learning that the company was researching the T-virus and realizing its horrors, she tried to inform the government about the company's activities. The person she contacted outside the company happened to be the female protagonist. Before she could steal the virus, it had already been stolen and released by Ryan. Afterwards, his sister also inhaled the virus and turned into a zombie.
Brian Carter was truly grateful to heaven. In the past, out of boredom, he had watched a large number of movies, especially favoring science fiction and horror genres. Being familiar with the plot and knowing who the main characters were greatly increased his chances of survival. The "main character never dies" trope—whether in novels or movies—should be common knowledge.
At this moment, a sound came from the large door above the platform. A long-haired female mercenary said, “Sir, the door has been opened. We can go in now.”
Matthew Addison nodded to several people, sighed as he looked at Brian Carter and the others, then led the mercenaries toward the door.
The door gradually opened under computer control. Looking inside from the doorway, it was pitch black; apart from darkness, nothing could be seen. Matthew Addison said to a mercenary beside him, “J.D.!”
That person nodded and put on night vision goggles. Matthew Addison hesitated for a moment, then turned to the black-haired young man and said, “Michael Bolton!”
Michael Bolton didn’t say much either. He picked up his Desert Eagle and strode inside. Brian Carter figured this black-haired young man must also be familiar with the plot. In Resident Evil 1, as long as the main computer wasn’t shut down, they would be safe here—at least for more than three hours. But once the main computer was turned off, this place would become a world of zombies and Lickers.
Soon, Michael Bolton turned on the lights inside. Gradually, the room brightened, and the windows on the walls revealed the scenery of city skyscrapers. Outside, the sun was shining and the sky was blue—clearly the view Brian Carter had grown numb to in his daily life.
The mercenaries and everyone else entered the room. A female mercenary, holding a detector, checked for a while and said, “The gas has dissipated. It’s safe here now.”
Brian Carter knew the entire plot. This underground lab had developed a biological weapon called the T-virus, which could infect and activate human flesh, turning people into zombies. The infected would lose all consciousness and thought, leaving only a single instinct: to eat!
Previously, when the character Ryan stole the T-virus, he destroyed a vial of it in the lab. Through the air circulation system, the virus spread throughout the Hive, infecting all the researchers and staff inside. But they were unaware of this. When the Hive’s central computer detected what had happened, it cut off all contact with the outside world and released poison gas inside. By the time the mercenaries and the female protagonist arrived, everyone in the lab except them had become zombies… and Lickers.
It seemed Resident Evil 1 really was a blockbuster movie. Brian Carter and several people around him had all seen it, so including Brian Carter and the bespectacled girl, the rest also leaned against the windows to look outside. The sunlight was dazzling and everything looked so real. They weren’t worried about being attacked at this moment, because they all knew it was very safe here.
The young man Matt, who had come to find his sister, suddenly said from the side, “This device is used to improve the underground working environment. No one wants to look at lifeless steel walls all day. If they could see sunlight, they might even think they were living above ground.”
Brian Carter hesitated for a moment, then reached out his hand and said, “Brian Carter… uh, maybe a security guard here.”
Because Matt didn’t have a company file, he was handcuffed by the mercenaries as soon as he appeared. He turned around with a wry smile and said, “Handcuffed like this, I can’t shake your hand… and I’ve forgotten my name too.”
Brian Carter smiled kindly. This Matt was a good person in the movie—actually the most innocent one. He had only come to find his sister, and even at the end of the story, he kept protecting the female protagonist. He was one of the survivors, and even fought for the heroine in Resident Evil 2.
On the other side, Matthew Addison and several mercenaries opened the elevator doors, but it was pitch black inside. Helpless, one of the mercenaries twisted open a flare and threw it down the elevator shaft. As the light faded into the distance, everyone finally saw the elevator—it had snapped from its cables and crashed to the bottom. There was no need to guess; the people inside were definitely dead.
The mercenary turned back and said, “Sir, looks like we’ll have to take the stairs.”
Matthew Addison looked a bit pale. He turned to everyone and said, “Take the stairs. We must reach the bottom level within ten minutes. Everyone, follow me!”
