Chapter 5

At this point, he made a concluding statement: “What a doomed fate, what a doomed fate. Seeing Mr. Carter like this, I’m actually pretty glad I didn’t go to the same school as that girl back then—who knows how miserable I would’ve ended up.”

“Shh, keep your voice down. If you say stuff like that, you’ll make The Boss jump up and drink again.” The Carter Chief showed the camaraderie of a fellow comrade, afraid that Brian Carter would get even more hurt.

Just as he finished speaking, Brian Carter on the bed suddenly turned over, his mouth moving, and in a daze he seemed to be singing: “You get me drunk, but you won’t stay with me…”

“It’s over, The Boss is really messed up this time. How long will it take him to recover?” Sammy looked worried.

“Yeah, he spent seven years chasing a girl, and now he’s hurt to the bone. How many years will it take for all these wounds to heal?” Dylan was also quite concerned, sighing, “Honestly, The Boss is kind of handsome, and he’s got a pretty nice body—he’s even got a six-pack. If he hadn’t thrown himself into that dead-end with that woman, maybe he could’ve dated the prettiest girl in our department, or at least the cutest girl in our class. If he’d listened to my advice, he would’ve ditched the ‘eternal virgin’ label ages ago!”

“Didn’t you guys say last time that Grace Cooper from the dance department kind of has a thing for Mr. Carter?” Logan, who already looked pretty sleazy, looked even more so when coming up with bad ideas: “According to the plot in those fanservice anime, the best way to forget a woman is to find a new one. Why don’t you message Grace Cooper and ask her to go out with Mr. Carter?”

“You’ve watched too much anime, kid. Wake up from your chuunibyou world already!” Dylan looked at Logan with utter disdain. “Never mind whether Grace Cooper would go out with him—the problem is, our The Boss definitely wouldn’t. He might act wild, but deep down he’s got a bit of innocence none of us have. I bet he won’t fall in love again anytime soon.”

“If he’s not going to love, what’s the point of talking? Let’s go, time to game!”

Cody made the final call, dragging Logan out with him.

The three guys left in dorm 301 immediately forgot about Brian Carter, and all sat down at their computers to log into the game.

The game was called “Fantasy,” a 3D online game brewed by Big Tencent after thirty years of shameless copying, combining the best of Eastern and Western games. Since its open beta on May 1st this year, in just two weeks it had broken multiple records and created an industry miracle.

The group of gaming nerds in Building 9, led by Sammy, had joined the “Sword of Kings” server in Telecom Zone 1 on the very first day of open beta. In this game, which claimed to have the hardest leveling system in history, they struggled for a week and finally completed their first job change.

The job change quest in Fantasy was extremely difficult. If you failed, your level would drop from 10 back to 9, and you’d need a day or two to grind back to level 10 before you could try again. Plus, the job change quest was randomized each time—if you were unlucky and got a hard one, you’d probably drop back to level 9 again…

Because of this, many players reached level 10 in a week, but even after two weeks still hadn’t managed to change jobs. Take Brian Carter for example: after reaching level 10, he spent a week and failed the job change quest four times. It wasn’t until the fifth try that he got lucky with an easy quest and successfully changed jobs to become a Shadow Rogue.

After changing jobs, they could finally tackle the Siren Dungeon.

The Siren Dungeon dropped rare level 10 gear, enough to carry players to level 20—currently the best equipment in the game. Of course, getting this gear was extremely difficult. Not only did amateur teams of regular students struggle, even many of the country’s top guilds and studios were wiped out over and over again.

All in all, the Siren Dungeon was still in the pioneering stage.

It just so happened to be the weekend, and the school didn’t turn off the lights, so they could game all night. So, the guys from 301 and 302 didn’t care how heartbroken Brian Carter was—they just teamed up and started raiding the normal mode of the Siren Dungeon.

The Siren Dungeon had three difficulty levels. The first was Normal, allowing up to five players, and a few excellent teams had already cleared it. The second was Hard, requiring a team of ten, and only a handful of top teams had managed to beat it so far. The third was Nightmare, needing a twenty-person team, and so far, no team in China or abroad had cleared it.

“Cody, hold the line! Are you made of paper or what? Why are you so squishy?”

“Logan, your heals are too weak! How about a boob job so you can give us a big heal?”

“Fourth Carter, stop standing right in front to DPS—get behind the boss and stab him in the butt!”

In front of the computer, Sammy was yelling into the mic, cursing out his four teammates.

None of the four dared talk back, because Sammy was already one of the top players in the School of Media, and he had some real command skills. Plus, both Cody and Dylan had gotten through their job change quests with Sammy’s help. Given all that, even though everyone hated being yelled at, they couldn’t think of a better way and just let Sammy rant.

“Screw it, I’m done. Going to bed!”

At 2 a.m., Sammy threw down his mouse and headed straight for the bathroom.

Tonight, the group had wiped eight times in a row and still hadn’t beaten the last boss of the normal Siren Dungeon. Every time you died, your gear’s durability dropped sharply. Most players were strapped for cash at this stage, and just the repair costs alone were enough to make them want to cry.
