Chapter 4

David Clark often took some indecent photos of girls from his friends and posted them in the class group to “share,” with quite a few people joining in to comment. Of course, William Carter didn’t feel any sympathy for those kinds of girls either.

Originally, William Carter thought he would never get involved in such things, but now, he felt it was a good opportunity.

“David Clark, may I ask if I can borrow money from your friend?” William Carter got straight to the point.

David Clark quickly replied, “Sure. Which department and class are you in?”

William Carter immediately sent a photo of his student ID. After confirming, David Clark asked, “How much do you want to borrow?”

“Twenty thousand!” Since it was a loan shark anyway, William Carter didn’t bother being polite. But based on what he knew, twenty thousand should be the maximum; if he asked for more, David Clark would probably refuse. After all, his family background wasn’t a secret—David Clark could easily find out with a little inquiry.

David Clark was clearly startled. Twenty thousand was a huge sum for a student; many female students only borrowed a few thousand, or even just a few hundred.

“Why do you need so much? Even if your girlfriend needs an abortion, it wouldn’t cost that much,” David Clark asked.

“It’s for something very important. Don’t ask, just tell me what conditions I need to meet to borrow it,” William Carter said.

“Well... how about this: you leave your student ID with me, give me your home address, and you have to write an IOU for fifty thousand. Also, you need to record a video holding the IOU, reading out its contents, and saying you’re borrowing voluntarily. Once you pay back the money, I’ll destroy the IOU in front of you.”

“How long do you need the twenty thousand for?” David Clark asked.

“One month,” William Carter replied.

“Then you’ll have to pay me back twenty-five thousand by then. We’re at the same school, so I’m not worried you won’t pay me back—you know what I mean,” David Clark said.

“Okay.” William Carter secretly clicked his tongue. That interest rate... even regular loan sharks weren’t this ruthless.

And now William Carter could tell that this “friend” was probably just David Clark himself, or at least he was involved.

This David Clark seemed very confident, not at all worried that William Carter would default. Who knows what methods he had. If William Carter didn’t pay, he’d probably be in a living hell.

“Heh.” William Carter laughed indifferently. Interest? Threats? When the end of the world comes, would he care about someone like David Clark?

That afternoon, William Carter found a car rental company online, then went to the place he’d arranged with David Clark, completed the “formalities,” and got the money.

While transferring the money to William Carter on his phone, David Clark looked him up and down curiously and asked, “What do you need the money for, anyway?”

“To do something big. In a week, you’ll know,” William Carter replied mysteriously.

“……” David Clark was speechless. What a weirdo. He immediately felt a bit of regret.

But the money had already been transferred, so David Clark quickly stopped caring. After all, whether someone was crazy or not, no student had ever dared to owe him money and not pay it back.

With the twenty thousand in hand, William Carter immediately headed to the car rental company.

There weren’t many minibuses available; unlike sedans, they weren’t easy to rent. William Carter had contacted every rental company online before finally finding one with a vehicle available. The other party urged William Carter to hurry over—they could only hold it for about two hours.

William Carter rushed over and arrived at the rental company an hour early. Seeing the store sign from afar, he finally breathed a sigh of relief.

The rental shop wasn’t big, but it was simply and tastefully decorated. Behind a reception desk stood a sweet-looking girl with a ponytail.

She was wearing the rental company’s uniform—a simple outfit that looked clean and fresh on her. She seemed to be about eighteen or nineteen, pure and youthful.

The girl was talking to another customer in a suit. When she saw William Carter arrive, she gave him a sweet smile, nodded, and gestured for him to wait a moment.

Seeing this girl brimming with youthful energy, William Carter was taken aback. This receptionist was really young.

William Carter sat down on the sofa nearby. By chance, he noticed a corner of a CET-6 English vocabulary book peeking out from under the girl’s desk materials. He immediately understood—this girl was probably a student, maybe even from his own university, working here part-time to earn living expenses.

The rental company was close to the university. Hiring a sweet-looking female student as a receptionist not only saved on labor costs, but such a pure girl could also attract more business.

“Hello, I’m the client manager, Grace Walker. You can call me Little Grace. I’m happy to serve you.”

After a few words with the other customer, the girl turned to William Carter. Her youthful appearance, paired with her professional greeting, created a curious contrast that was actually rather cute.

“Hello, I’m the one who reserved the minibus online...” William Carter stood up and said.

“Ah... this...”
