Chapter 14

William Carter was startled. He turned his head and saw a face pressed tightly against his car window, with both hands desperately scratching at his window and car door, looking absolutely frantic to get inside.

Half of this face was covered in blood, with blood all over the mouth and teeth as well. What made William Carter's heart skip a beat was that this face looked somewhat familiar to him—it was the same porter who had fainted earlier!

Watching a living person turn into such a monster right before his eyes, even though he had mentally prepared himself for this, William Carter still felt a chill shoot from the soles of his feet straight to the top of his head, making his scalp tingle.

Moreover, the mutated porter was nothing like the slow-moving zombies in movies and TV shows. When he suddenly lunged out, his movements were quick and agile. The sound of his scratching at the car door was piercing, and when he pounded on it, it made a loud “bang bang” noise—he was clearly very strong. His bloodshot eyes were wide open, staring unblinkingly at William Carter inside the car, while a constant “huh huh” growl came from his throat.

Perhaps attracted by the commotion the porter was making, a few more figures emerged from the gray mist behind him.

William Carter snapped out of his shock at once. He immediately stepped on the gas, and inertia flung the porter off, while the base vehicle William Carter was driving shot out onto the road.

The moment he saw the situation on the road, William Carter felt even colder all over. Screams and shrieks were everywhere, people were running for their lives, and zombies were chasing after them.

Just as William Carter got the base vehicle fully onto the main road, he saw someone running toward him. In his panic, this person immediately spotted the newly arrived minibus and William Carter in the driver’s seat.

“Help!” But just as he reached out his hand, a figure in a suit suddenly lunged out from behind a nearby sedan and tackled him to the ground.

With a scream, blood spattered everywhere, and the man in the suit who bit him lifted his head, arching his neck to reveal a twisted, ferocious face and eyes completely bloodshot.

A dozen or so zombies immediately swarmed over, completely surrounding the man. Only his hand, raised high and still struggling for help, could be seen. But in just a second, his screams stopped, and a large pool of blood spread from where he had fallen.

Scenes like this were happening everywhere. It was the first time William Carter had seen someone torn apart alive right in front of him.

At that moment, the zombie who had tackled the man noticed William Carter inside the vehicle and immediately lunged at the minibus.

Seeing this, William Carter quickly slammed on the gas, sending the zombie flying. William Carter kept driving forward. There were many crashed vehicles on the road, causing a traffic jam, but William Carter’s minibus was sturdy enough to ram straight through some of the cars parked at odd angles, forcing a path open.

Many zombies were drawn to William Carter’s minibus, throwing themselves at it one after another, only to be shaken off by William Carter’s acceleration and sharp turns. These zombies were indeed very strong, even those who had originally been children, women, or the elderly.

When there were too many of them, William Carter even felt his minibus shake, making his heart skip a beat.

A few zombies lunged at him from the front and were knocked down by William Carter, causing the minibus to jolt. William Carter didn’t look back—under these circumstances, running over a few zombies didn’t mean much anymore. Still, as an ordinary person, William Carter didn’t want to face such gruesome scenes.

“Shenbei highway entrance…” Seeing the carnage on the road along the way, William Carter had no idea what the situation was like at the highway entrance Emily Thompson had mentioned, but he decided to go check it out now.

Of course, William Carter wasn’t planning to go to the Shanhai Safe Island, but he did need to take the Shenbei highway to reach Jinling City, where Olivia Carter was. The disaster had already happened, and by taking the highway, he could reach Jinling City within a day and then find Olivia Carter.

William Carter knew that Olivia Carter hadn’t mutated either, but the pain of being infected by the virus was already bad enough. And after witnessing how dangerous these zombies were, William Carter was even more worried.

Even though he had made sure Olivia Carter was well prepared, and with Olivia Carter’s personality, she would surely be extremely cautious in protecting herself after realizing the world had become such a hell on earth, William Carter still couldn’t help but worry—after all, she was his only family.

The closer he got to the Shenbei highway entrance, the more living people there were. Some were also driving, but because everyone was scrambling to get ahead, it only made the traffic jam worse.

After honking his horn a few times, William Carter saw more cars squeezing in from behind, cutting into the gaps ahead. Soon, William Carter’s way forward was completely blocked.

One car passed by him, rolled down the window a crack, and an agitated, crazed face leaned out, cursing at William Carter: “Idiot! Driving such a big vehicle and blocking the road!”

After cursing, the car drove off ahead of William Carter.
